RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – As the early voting period officially came to a close in North Carolina over the weekend, droves of people came out in record-breaking fashion ahead of the 2024 general election.
Over 4.2 million North Carolinians cast their ballots in person during the early voting period, the N.C. State Board of Elections reported Sunday. This exceeds the previous statewide record when more than 3.6 million people voted early in 2020.
As of Sunday morning, 4,465,548 voters across the state have cast their ballots in the 2024 election, which marks 57% of all registered voters in North Carolina, according to NCSBE officials.
Meanwhile, voters in the 25 western North Carolina counties affected by Hurricane Helene continue to outpace the rest of the state. Through the end of Saturday, voter turnout in those counties is 58.9% – nearly 2% higher than the statewide total.
“I am proud of all of our 100 county boards of elections and the thousands of election workers who are making this happen in their communities,” said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the N.C. State Board of Elections. “And I am especially proud of the workers and voters of western North Carolina. You are an inspiration to us all.”
The final chance for registered North Carolina voters to make their voices heard will be on Tuesday. Polls are set to be open on Election Day from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
