Durham police were investigating at two different scenes within a 3-minute drive of one another on Saturday afternoon.

The first incident occurred around 11:12 am near the intersection of Southwest Durham Drive and Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard.

Responding officers found a vehicle stopped in the northbound lane with a woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

She was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Durham police were investigating in a Home Depot parking lot, where there appeared to be blood on the pavement, on Saturday morning.

Just eight minutes later, an off-duty Durham police officer heard gunshots in the parking lot of a business located on the 3700 block of Mount Moriah Road.

Upon investigation, the officer discovered a man with a gunshot wound.

Similar to the first incident, he was transported to the hospital but later died.

While the investigation remains ongoing, initial findings suggest a connection between the two shootings.

Authorities are currently working under the assumption this was an isolated event. Additionally, a suspect is now in custody, and investigators believe the suspect had a prior relationship with at least one of the victims.

One witness told WRAL News she was inside Home Depot when she heard the commotion outside.

“Police were already there,” she said. “A lady was walking towards us and we asked what happened, and she said a man in a red van had been shot and they just took him away in the ambulance. There were shoes tossed by the red van and blood on the ground.”

WRAL News is working to learn more about what happened at this scene.
