A 25-year-old driver who died after crashing onto a Queens sidewalk, flipping his BMW, had just been shot in the back, police revealed Tuesday.
Tao Wu was heading west on 37th St. in Flushing in a black 2022 BMW when he hit the sidewalk near Parsons Blvd. about 9:50 p.m. Sunday. The impact of the crash caused Wu’s car to flip upside down.
Medics rushed Wu to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Queens, where he died. Cops were initilally unaware he had been shot.
But a further examination at the hospital revealed that Wu had been shot in the upper back and his death has now been deemed a homicide. He was about a mile from home when he crashed.
It hasn’t yet been determined if Wu died from the gunshot wound or from the wild crash. Investigators believe he was either inside his car or just outside the vehicle when he was shot.
Investigators believe he was the intended target but have not established a motive. Wu has no criminal record, police said.
Cops on Tuesday were scouring the area looking for surveillance video to help them determine where exactly the shooting took place and find the killer.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
