Another indictment has been handed down for Donald Trump in relation to the chaotic 2020 election.
On Tuesday, special counsel Jack Smith announced that Trump had been charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of an attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights, ABC News reports.
In an effort to steal the election from the rightful winner, Joe Biden, Trump allegedly used former Vice President Mike Pence to help alter the election results. He reportedly used the Department of Justice to conduct fruitless investigations into voter fraud that never took place. The indictment also states that Trump continued to spew his lies about the election, despite knowing that no fraud had been committed on Biden’s behalf. Even on the day of the fateful Capitol Riots in January 2021, Trump repeated his inflammatory comments.
“Despite having lost, the Defendant was determined to remain in power. So for more than two months following election day on November 3, 2020, the Defendant spread lies that there had been outcome-determinative fraud in the election and that he had actually won,” the indictment read.
Trump is set to make his first court appearance on Thursday. This indictment is just the latest in his long list of legal crises. The White House hopeful is also facing a similar investigation in Georgia for interfering with the election. He has maintained his innocence, though an indictment in that probe is expected in the coming weeks. As of now, Trump has no plans of calling off his 2024 campaign.
