Dogs that ingest marijuana butts can end up making emergency run to vet – Medical Marijuana Program Connection

A jaunt to the leash-free dog park shouldn’t end in a run to the emergency vet, but that’s what happened to a four-month-old pup which accidentally ingested a marijuana butt.

Bootsy, a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever named after famed bassist William “Bootsy” Collins, became seriously ill soon after returning from play time in the park adjacent to his east Toronto home earlier this winter.

Tracy Chong said her pup began shivering while still in the park so she brought him home immediately — assuming he was cold — only to find him a short time later covered in his own vomit.

“He wouldn’t come out of the crate and he had a really glassy-eyed look on his face,” Chong said this week. “I called the vet and they said it was probably likely that he had eaten something. I brought a sample of the barf with me to the emergency vet and said, ‘Here you can smell it but I think it’s weed.’”

After the trip to the Veterinary Emergency Clinic and Referral Centre on Yonge St., and an overnight vigil to ensure he didn’t choke on his own…
