Virginia voters headed to the polls Tuesday for the second time in the primary election season, after casting presidential candidate votes back in March.

VIRGINIA, USA — Virginia voters headed to the polls Tuesday for a second time in the primary election season. After making their voices heard regarding the presidential race back in March, this time voters were choosing nominees for the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House and several local races, including in Arlington County and the cities of Alexandria, Manassas and Winchester.

Tuesday’s primary election allowed voters to pick from five Republicans competing to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine in November; Kaine ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination after serving Virginians in the Senate since 2013.  Hung Cao emerged the decisive Republican winner, with more than 60% of the votes.

Six U.S. House districts had contested primary elections on Tuesday. Two of the most watched Democratic races were in Districts 7 and 10, where the current seat holders are not seeking re-election. Abigail Spanberger (D-7) is not running again so she can run for governor in 2025. Jennifer Wexton (D-10) is retiring due to health challenges.

Both races had crowded candidate fields with seven Democrats and six Republicans vying for the 7th District seat, and 12 Democrats and four Republicans fighting to represent the 10th District. Eugene S. Vindman (D) and Derrick M. Anderson (R) will face off in November to replace Spanberger while Suhas Subramanyam (D) and Mike Clancy (R) duke it out to replace Wexton.

On the Republican front, people are still watching the District 5 congressional race, with no winner had been declared as of 11:30 p.m. Right now, the office is held by Bob Good (R), who endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president before backing Donald Trump after DeSantis dropped out. Since then, Trump and his allies have gone full steam ahead to defeat Good in the primary and are endorsing Good’s Republican challenger John McGuire.

At the local level, the Arlington County Board race focused on housing density, empty office space and stagnant tax revenue. Five candidates competed for the seat that will be left vacant by current Board Chair Libby Garvey, and the Board’s longest-serving member, not seeking re-election. The race is being decided using ranked choice voting, which means instead of selecting just one candidate, voters can rank candidates from first to last according to their preference. The final counting of ballots won’t happen until June 22.
