Denver police officer involved in 2 car crash

DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver Police Department reports that a police officer was involved in a two-car crash on Friday.

The crash took place near East Andrews Drive and Dillon Street.

A family on scene told FOX31 that a car with three teenagers was driving down Andrews at Dillon. That’s when the family said the officer in an unmarked vehicle, who was reportedly at a stop sign, entered the intersection and collided with the 17-year-old driver.

“We were watching the soccer game on the field so everything was behind us but it was kind of like almost like brakes screeches and then the sound of the collision,” a witness told reporter Kasia Kerridge on scene.

The witness said a tire also popped off one of the vehicles and rolled down the street after the crash.

“We kind of watched to see where the tire was going. It skipped past two or three cars and then rolled through the crash and hit the back of her car,” the witness said.

The family believed the officer was at fault, but Denver Police have not yet confirmed that information, or how this crash happened. However, it appears airbags went off in both vehicles.

“Everyone’s okay and that the damage was to the vehicles, not to anyone’s well-being, and I think the amount of people that ran over to show how supportive the community is. There was a lot of people from, going on walks, or just from the neighborhood, that came to help whatever was going on as the other officers and emergency vehicles were coming,” the witness said.

There were no serious injuries reported at this time and no officers were injured. The family said the teenage driver went to the hospital but is expected to be okay.

The cause of the crash is being investigated
