Decorating Your Home For Fall

Create a welcoming entrance to your home this fall with elements from nature!

  • A beautiful wreath on your front door is an easy way to add color and charm to your entryway. Whether store bought or homemade, consider wreaths that include one or more of the following for an autumnal feel: colorful autumn leaves, dried gourds, decorative corn, bittersweet branches, and dried flowers such as mums, pansies, celosia and hydrangea.

    • Tip: An easy way to preserve colorful autumns leaves to use for decorating is to sandwich them between two sheets of wax paper and then iron each side on high. The heat from the iron will transfer a light coating of wax onto the leaves, helping to preserve them and their color.

  • Have a lamppost or mailbox post? Make it a fall focal point by tying dried corn stalks around it. Add some small blocks of hay to create multi-level tiers around its base and place pumpkins, gourds, mums and ornamental corn on them.

  • Create an instant border along your walkway with ornamental kale or cabbage. Both are similar in appearance, color and size. Cabbage leaves have smooth edges while kale leaves are characteristically frilled.

  • Tried-and-true pots of mums and pumpkins are classic fall elements. Why not freshen up this familiar look by mixing in some white pumpkins, and supplementing your floral display of mums with colorful pansies and brilliant-hued celosias?

  • Frame your door with some bold beauty using tall planters on either side of it. Include vertical elements such as dried ornamental grass fronds, clusters of bittersweet and eucalyptus branches, and branches of colorful fall leaves. Fill the base with coral bells, dried oakleaf hydrangea blossoms and rosemary for some green.

  • Think outside the (window) box – fill your window box with an assortment of colorful gourds and small solar-powered lights. Or include a vibrant mix of jewel-toned celosia with gem-hued ornamental peppers for a pop of brilliant color.
