When you live a hectic life, it can be hard to keep up with your responsibilities and stay organized.
In order to make sure you’re always prepared for the next big event or meeting, you need to declutter your life.
It’s not always easy to find the right time to get rid of unwanted items, but it’s important that you do so regularly.
If you don’t, you might find yourself feeling stressed because there isn’t enough space in your home or office for everything you need.
You may also have difficulty finding things when they are needed on short notice.
If you want to find ways to release stress through decluttering, follow these seven tips.
The Psychology Behind Clutter
If you’re a person who likes to keep things neat and tidy, you might be wondering why others can’t make their bedroom look like the model home for a store.
And if your room is always a mess, you might be wondering why your friend can’t seem to keep their room tidy for more than five minutes at a time.
It’s all about psychology.
There are two main reasons why people keep clutter around:
- They think that by keeping things organized, they’ll remember where they put them.
- They think that by keeping things unorganized, they’ll forget where they put them
The truth is that neither of these applies in most cases.
While it’s true that some people have memory problems that require actual organization, most people don’t have this issue.
We’re all capable of remembering where we put things.
It’s just that our brains are wired differently so some people need more reminders than others.
Can Stress Result From Clutter?

Yes!
Sometimes, when we’re stressed, we clean our homes.
We might do this to feel more in control of our lives, or to feel like we have a better handle on the things that are stressing us out.
For example, if I went home from work and saw that the house is a mess, I would automatically feel stressed.
This can push me to put on top of my to-do list to declutter my home the next weekend.
But sometimes, the act of cleaning can actually make things worse.
For example, if you’re feeling stressed because you haven’t been able to find your keys, and you finally find them under a pile of papers on your desk, it can be frustrating.
This can cause stress by having to sift through all that mess again just to put them away.
Or maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff you have lying around and decide it’s time to get rid of it all.
You start purging your belongings, but you end up with so much stuff that needs organizing (or throwing away) that even more stress enters into the equation.
This is why experts recommend that instead of cleaning up when life gets stressful, try going for a walk or getting some exercise instead.
It’s not only good for your health but also helps relieve stress!

We’ve got some tips to help you release that stress.
1) Declutter Your Home

You know what they say, a cluttered home is a cluttered mind.
And it’s true.
When you live in a messy environment, you’re more likely to be stressed out and have difficulty concentrating.
But when your home is clean and organized, you can focus on other things, like the people around you or the nature of your work.
So how do you start decluttering your home?
The first step is to ask yourself why you’re holding onto things that don’t matter to you anymore (or haven’t in years).
If there’s no reason for them to be there, get rid of them!
Even if it feels like getting rid of an old pair of shoes will cause you to lose something important, try giving them away instead.
You’ll feel so much better once they’re gone.
And your space will be much more open and inviting than before.
2) Organize Your Office

If you have a home office, it can be hard to keep it tidy.
A lot of people have trouble organizing their office because they don’t want to spend money on a filing cabinet or other organizational tools.
However, there are ways to get organized without spending any money.
Here are some tips for getting your office organized:
- Label everything;
- Keep only what is necessary; and
- Use containers to store items.
3) Clean Out The Closet

One of the best ways to release stress is by decluttering your closet, and it’s easy!
First, you need to go through all your clothing and throw out anything that doesn’t fit or isn’t in good condition anymore.
Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks.
This is for your own well-being.
After that, sort through your remaining items by color and lay them out on the floor in a way that makes sense to you.
In my case, I often organize them by season.
Then pick up each item one at a time and ask yourself: “Do I love this?”
If the answer is “no,” put it back into the pile of clothes to be donated or sold.
You can also do this with other household items like kitchenware and books.
The goal is to make space in your life so that you can feel more relaxed and open up space for new things!
4) Purge Your Junk Drawer

Another simple stress-relieving tip through decluttering is through purging your junk drawer.
Grab a plastic bag, and start going through your junk drawer.
Get rid of anything that’s broken, or doesn’t work.
The goal is to get rid of anything that doesn’t serve a purpose for you.
You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel after decluttering the junk drawer!
5) Toss Old Clothes

If you’re looking for a quick way to reduce stress, decluttering your clothes might be the answer.
But how do you know what to toss?
It’s easy!
Just grab any piece of clothing that doesn’t fit, or that you haven’t worn in the last six months and ask yourself: “Do I love this?”
If the answer is no, it’s time to let go.
When it comes to decluttering, we’re all guilty of holding onto items that don’t serve us anymore.
For me, sentimental items are very hard to let go of.
But no matter how mentally hard it is, letting go of things that don’t serve their purpose anymore is the right thing to do.
Maybe they were expensive or sentimental, or maybe we just can’t bring ourselves to part with them.
But if an item doesn’t bring you joy when you look at it, then it’s time for some spring cleaning!
The good news is that decluttering can be fun, especially when you use your favorite pair of scissors to cut through old clothes!
6) Get Rid Of Unwanted Gifts And Items

In an effort to declutter, it’s important to get rid of any unwanted gifts.
If you’re like me, you’ve probably received some pretty generous gifts over the years.
But just because they were given to you doesn’t mean that they should stay with you.
If you’ve been holding onto something for years and can’t remember who gave it to you, then it’s probably time to let go.
You’ll be surprised at how liberating it is when you’re able to clear out all these things that have been weighing on your mind.
It also helps if there are items that are no longer in use or that never got used in the first place.
These can include things like old clothes, broken electronics, and outdated furniture pieces that no longer fit into your home decorating scheme or lifestyle needs.
7) Don’t Let Clutter Come Back Into Your Life

One of the most effective ways to release stress is through decluttering.
In fact, it’s one of the easiest things you can do in order to reduce your stress levels.
The reason this works so well is that clutter is often associated with feelings of anxiety and frustration, sometimes even anger.
When you get rid of all that stuff that’s been piling up, you’re actually getting rid of those emotions as well!
It’s a win-win situation.
You’re getting rid of stuff AND releasing stress at the same time!
Why Is Decluttering Therapeutic?

When you declutter, you’re clearing the space to breathe.
The way I see it, decluttering is a journey of self-discovery.
It is a process that helps me learn more about who I am and what makes me happy.
It’s like a treasure hunt.
You start by following all the signs, but eventually, you find yourself digging deeper into the core of your being.
By getting rid of things that don’t serve you, you discover how much more space there is for the things that do.
You start to see how much energy it takes to hold onto things that aren’t meaningful or useful to you anymore.
And when you let go of those things, you have more room for the new experiences that come along with it.
And maybe even some surprises along the way!
Start A Stress-Free Environment Through Decluttering!
It’s not surprising that decluttering your home can help you feel more relaxed and less stressed.
It’s such a simple process, and it’s easy to see how it would be effective!
The idea is to take an hour every day to look around your home and decide what you don’t need anymore.
Then throw away or donate those items.
The next day, do the same thing again.
And so on.
It’s a simple process that anyone can do at their own pace!
