Dangerous swimming conditions are expected Thursday. Strong onshore winds behind a cold front will build waves to 3 to 6 feet along the shores of southern Lake Michigan.

The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project (GLSRP) has tracked drowning statistics on the Great Lakes since 2010:

  • Males are more susceptible to drowning due to risk-taking behavior.
  • Strong swimmers can still drown.
  • More than half of Americans lack basic swimming abilities.
  • There is a difference between the Hollywood version of drowning and the actual signs.
  • Basic survival strategies like “Flip, Float, and Follow” are important.

  • Inland lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc., pose dangers.
  • Mixing alcohol and water is dangerous.
