Dangerous swimming conditions are expected Thursday. Strong onshore winds behind a cold front will build waves to 3 to 6 feet along the shores of southern Lake Michigan.

The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project (GLSRP) has tracked drowning statistics on the Great Lakes since 2010:

- Males are more susceptible to drowning due to risk-taking behavior.
- Strong swimmers can still drown.
- More than half of Americans lack basic swimming abilities.
- There is a difference between the Hollywood version of drowning and the actual signs.
- Basic survival strategies like “Flip, Float, and Follow” are important.
- Dangerous currents in bodies of water are often unknown.
- Untrained rescuers can become victims themselves.
- Inland lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc., pose dangers.
- Mixing alcohol and water is dangerous.
