Officials said a “significant discovery” was made at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, involving the seizure of over 290 grams of marijuana, cigarettes, and various illicit items.
On Wednesday afternoon, a team of prison officers acted on intelligence that led them to the B-Division cells, where they conducted searches.
In one cell, located near the toilet area, law enforcement discovered a bag containing 53 grams of marijuana, along with cellphones and a Wi-Fi box, all of which were promptly confiscated.
Another cell yielded a bag containing 104 packs of cigarettes and marijuana weighing a total of 241 grams, which were also seized.
Two prisoners claimed ownership of the items. The Arouca police station was immediately informed, and a team of officers, led by Sgt Evans and PC Thomas, promptly responded.
The seized items were confiscated, and the prisoners were given a cautionary notice of intended prosecution this week.
More on this as it becomes available.
