Community thanks SF barbershop that helped stop stabbing suspect

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — After three San Francisco barbers chased down a suspect who allegedly robbed and stabbed a woman last week, the community has been showing its gratitude.

Chicago 2 Barbershop told KRON4 that people have come by to leave gifts since hearing about the barbers’ heroic act.

“I didn’t expect this much of a reaction from the community,” said Ramy Shatara, one of the barbers who stopped the suspect. “Everyone is so thankful. People come in bringing us some cookies. One lady brought us a whole bunch of Popeyes chicken. Just overwhelming support, which is real cool.”

“That’s the kind of neighborhood that we are. We’re big on community and taking care of each other,” said Alex Asefaw, who owns Obsidian Dispensary, across the street from the barbershop.

Shatara paid the price for the heroics. He suffered a fractured fibula while he and his coworkers ran after the man who committed the alleged stabbing.

Shatara said he was taking a call outside the barbershop when he heard a woman screaming for help. Another barber told him that he had just seen the man stab a woman in an attempted robbery. Other citizens pulled the man off the woman, and he then took off running down the street.

The three barbers chased the man two blocks down Golden Gate Avenue before tripping him and disarming him, Shatara said.

“I didn’t really think about it,” Shatara said. “It’s either go now or this guy is gonna get away.”

Police showed up and arrested the suspect, who was identified as 34-year-old Matthew Glen Hernandez.

Shatara did not realize he was injured until the adrenaline wore off. His leg started to hurt, and his girlfriend urged him to go to the emergency room, where he found out he had a hairline fracture in his fibula.

The victim’s father later got in contact with him to thank him for his effort.

On Tuesday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed came to the barbershop for an event that was planned before the stabbing and subsequent citizen’s arrest. She declined to comment for this story.
