CLEVELAND (WJW) – Two families gathered at midfield before the Cleveland Browns game on Sunday as the team honored local police officers killed in the line of duty.

The team honored Euclid officer Jacob Derbin and Cleveland officer Jamieson Ritter.

The team presented a plaque to each family with a Browns jersey including the badge number of each officer: #14 for Officer Derbin and #1176 for Officer Ritter.

Officer Derbin, 23, died in May when he was ambushed on a call for domestic trouble. Police said his killer died that same weekend during a standoff.

Officer Ritter, 27, died July 4th when he was shot and killed by a suspect wanted for shooting his grandmother. The suspect in that case has been ruled incompetent for trial, and he has been sent to a psych clinic for mental health treatment.

This week, the FOX 8 I-TEAM revealed he had slipped through the cracks of the courts months ago when he was ruled incompetent for trial in an unrelated case.

Both families have told the I-Team they’re committed to keeping the memories of the officers alive. And, they’ve called for change. Demanding tougher penalties for criminals.

The two officers both had military service in their backgrounds.

And, the Browns honored them before their annual Salute to Service game recognizing military veterans and their families.
