Local stakeholders are preparing for the change, which does not have an exact timeline.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As Portland continues to battle its homelessness crisis, one plan to get more people off the streets is to expand one of the city’s existing safe rest villages.

The Multnomah Safe Rest Village in Southwest Portland opened in the spring of 2022. The city wants to triple how many people can stay there from 28 to 100. The City of Portland said the expansion is due to the increased need in the area.

“We are working with the stakeholders that include a school which is just nearby the safe rest village,” said Multnomah Neighborhood Association President Moses Ross. “We’re working with, trying to work with the adjacent property owners, make sure that their opinions are heard and their concerns are heard. And then, of course, the neighborhood, in general, is going to have an impact with this planned expansion.”

The city does not have a set timeline for when the expansion would take place as they are still actively in the permitting process to expand. The current Multnomah Safe Rest Village is located at 2731 SW Multnomah Blvd. KOIN 6 News will continue to follow this story.
