(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento City Council approved a contract to repair a pool closed for the last two summers.

The city awarded the roughly $600,000 contract to renovate the pool at Southside Park to Dave Gross Enterprises Inc.

According to the city, the fiberglass finish “has deteriorated beyond its useful life” and poses a health risk to swimmers.

The contractor is expected to remove the existing fiberglass finish, tiles, and other surfaces; and install new tiles, pool markings, depth markers, rope anchors, main drain covers, wall inlets and other fitting covers.

Earlier this month, Sacramento Superintendent of Recreation Sjon Swanson said that once a contract is approved, work would start in early June and that the pool is expected to open this summer.

That announcement came the same day that the new operator of the Cal Expo water park announced it would not open this summer while the area undergoes a remodel.

Those closures could push some residents looking to cool off toward local rivers even as officials warn people to stay away from those natural alternatives which are being made more dangerous by melting snow.
