  • The incident occurred when Bailey ordered a Beyond Burger at a hotel, but it turned out to be a real beef burger

Discussing slipping up and shattering her 11-year-long vegan stint, Chloe Bailey—half of R&B double act Chloe x Halle—recently opened up about her post-vegan life. The 25-year-old singer explained that she and her 23-year-old sister Halle had been vegan for ten years straight, but, thanks to a mix-up in a hotel room service order, they have now managed to inadvertently dive back into consuming red meats.

Chloe explained that she had ordered Beyond Burgers for them—vegan with no butter on the buns. As they ate, though, something tasted wrong to Halle, so she asked Chloe if the burgers were plant-based, as ordered.

As much as Halle was convinced that the burgers were just a normal Beyond Burger that they always eat and that it was all in her head or, as said by Chloe, as soon as she bit into one for herself, she knew something was wrong.

“The juice dripping from the burger is not like a Beyond burger. I just knew it wasn’t a fake burger,” Chloe said on Instagram Live.

Chloe runs the front desk of the hotel, frantically calling to ask if they had brought her vegan burgers as she had requested. To her shock, the person on the other end at the concierge desk informed her that they had delivered “brand burgers,” not the Beyond Burgers that she had ordered in the first place.

Unexpectedly, the eating of red meat overwhelmed Chloe, who had not touched red meat for 11 years. “Immediately, I’m losing my s**t. I googled down a whole can of Sprite,” Chloe said, adding that Halle was laughing at her reaction, and she was crying.

This incident happened just before Chloe and Halle were supposed to open for Beyoncé on her Renaissance World Tour show in Atlanta, Georgia.

The mistake of eating meat has opened up Chloe to be candid about how getting used to life again outside veganism has been.

“I’m ten years vegan. I haven’t had red meat in 10 years,” she said on Instagram Live.

Most of Chloe’s fans and other general vegans felt sorry for her; she didn’t ask for it, after all. A Facebook friend commented,

“I’m vegetarian, and it’s hard to tell the difference sometimes, but you know the taste of real meat and that stomach ache ain’t no joke.”

Another user added,

“My first time eating meat after a fully vegan diet, my stomach… revolted.”

It was about a decade ago that the Bailey sisters first became vegans. As they told Complex during a joint interview in 2017:

“‘Being vegan started from our mother. One day, she said, ‘I’m going to try to be vegetarian for a week. You can join me if you’d like.’ We started the week with her and just never went back.”

Veganism among many individuals has significantly impacted one central aspect of career and life for Chloe and Halle.

In an interview in 2023, Halle credited the vegan diet as one of the most significant contributors in keeping their voices healthy by eliminating dairy and eliminating extra mucus buildup. But lo and behold, Chloe and Halle remain strict vegans. This incident exemplifies just how one could easily fall into a plant-based diet, devastatingly so, if meal preparation is left to someone else.

Not entirely done with life after the involuntary consumption of meat that found its way into her bloodstream, Chloe keeps processing the experience and iterating ways to connect with fans who relate to these struggles in the frames of their own vegan lives.
