The Charlotte Hornets have selected French forward Tidjane Salaun with the 6th overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft.
Salaun has been a late, rapid riser in the draft process, and we didn’t even write up a full profile on him. He’s a very, very raw prospect, but he has a lot of tools that could develop into a good player in time. The quick and dirty:
Strengths: physical profile, motor, upside
Salaun has great size for a forward at almost 6’9″ without shoes with a 7’1″ wingspan. He uses that length to be active on the glass and in passing lanes. He has work to do fundamentally on defense, but he has the motor and effort to be a plus on the side of the ball with his physical tools. He shows little bits and pieces of a good player, but he needs to put it all together. He’s gotten better shooting the ball, but it’s still not a strength. He’s able to create looks for himself at times, but he struggles to convert them. He has moments where he makes nice passes, but he also can be turnover prone. He needs to find a way to make the highs more consistent.
Weaknesses: feel for the game, shooting touch
Like I said in his strengths, Salaun has shown flashes of most skills you’d want a forward to have. However, he struggles to use those skills to his benefit consistently enough. He needs to play with more control and focus. While he was a passable shooter this season, he has some underwhelming shooting splits from the line and at the rim.
The Hornets will get straight to work at sculpting Salaun’s raw traits in the hopes of turning him into a two way star. That will start at the summer league in early July.
