Community Development Long Island has received two grant awards totaling $800,000 from New York State Homes and Community Renewal.

CDLI received $300,000 through HCR’s Access To Home program and $500,000 for the agency’s Residential Emergency Services to Offer Repairs to the Elderly (RESTORE) program.

The new grants are the largest awards CDLI has secured for these initiatives, according to a statement from the regional nonprofit. Securing the funds was driven by the needs of Long Island residents and communities, but also because of CDLI’s ability to execute and deliver program goals.

“We thank HCR for their continued support and confidence in CDLI,” the organization said in the statement. “These grants are a significant contribution towards our efforts in serving the Long Island region. We remain dedicated to effectively utilizing these resources to make a lasting and positive impact in our communities.”

The Access To Home program offers modifications for financially constrained differently abled individuals, focusing on enhancing the safety and comfort of their homes and the RESTORE program provides emergency repairs and safety improvements for elderly homeowners.

According to CDLI, 18.1 percent of Long Island’s population is aged 65 and over representing more than 500,000 Long Island residents. Nearly 17 percent, or just under 500,000 Long Island residents are differently abled. CDLI stresses that those demographics highlight the growing need for home modifications supporting seniors and those differently abled allowing them to live independently.

CDLI team members William Achnitz and Michael DiMarcantonio are certified aging-in-place specialists, a National Association of Home Builders designation, and their training equips them to design and modify homes for the aging and those differently abled, according to the statement.

Those interested in applying for funds or assisting someone with the application process can find details about these programs at CDLI.org.
