We go through about four to six sleep cycles per night, which equals the recommended six to nine hours of sleep.
So to find your bedtime, take your “socially determined wake-up time” and count backward about seven-and-a-half hours. For example, if you have to wake up at 7 a.m. to get to work by 8 a.m., then count backward and your bedtime should be 11:30 p.m.
It takes a little experimenting, though, because your sleep cycle is unique. It took Dr. Breus a few times to find that his sleep cycle is six-and-a-half hours of sleep. So for him to wake up at 6:30 a.m., he goes to bed at 12 p.m.

2. Stop caffeine by 2 p.m.
It can take up to six hours for caffeine from a single cup of coffee to leave your body.

Speaking of caffeine, Dr. Breus does suggest taking — what he calls — a nap-a-latte. It combines coffee and a power nap taken “somewhere in the early afternoon.”

Add three ice cubes,
Chug it down really quickly, and
Go take a nap.

4. Stop drinking alcohol 3 hours before bedtime

As a lead investigator Paul Poirier, M.D., Ph.D., explained in a news release, “Our study shows that structured yoga practices can be a healthier addition to aerobic exercise than simply muscle stretching.”
Everyone’s ideal movement routine will be a little different. You Can Always Make a Fresh Start (Interview)
For this inaugural Don’t Take My Word For It post, I am sharing my first-ever Interview with a Goal-Crusher. In these interviews, I sit down with someone that is accomplishing big things by setting and achieving their goals to learn their secrets. Then I share those secrets with you. It’s like free mentoring from someone already on the road to success. Who doesn’t want that?!
It was early Spring of 2022 in Columbus, Ohio, but the weather was anything but spring-like. People throughout the city were still wearing their heavy winter coats to protect them from the cold. That’s when a new business opened that provided an oasis to escape their winter blues and the stressors of the world around them.
After months of hard work, Fresh Start Yoga officially opened its doors in Columbus’ Brewery District in Columbus in April 2022. Occupying a space above a decades-old popular bar, this studio offers clients a welcoming environment where they can move, reflect and get their own fresh start.
I recently had an opportunity to talk to first-time business owner Jessica Jenkins about the studio, her goals and how she brought this studio to life.
Please introduce yourself and tell Operation Melt readers what you do.
Hi! I am Jessica Jenkins; I have recently opened a downtown Columbus yoga studio, Fresh Start Yoga. The studio is located upstairs at 543 South High Street. As the owner, I teach most classes and run day-to-day operations.
Tell me more about Fresh Start: what is the vibe, and what’s your vision for the studio?
Yoga can be intimidating to some, and I don’t want people to feel that here.
My vision for Fresh Start Yoga is to create a community. I want everyone to be able to come to class and feel comfortable and welcomed.
This is your safe space.
I can personally say that you are achieving this vision. After taking a few yoga classes at the studio, I can say that I have always felt welcomed and never judged. You are such an excellent yoga instructor! How did you get started with yoga? What drew you to it?
I have struggled for some time with severe anxiety and depression. It has been crippling at times. I felt stuck and didn’t know how to overcome this problem.
A friend suggested that I try yoga. It took me a while to actually do it, but when I finally did, it was a game changer. Yoga was one hour of my day that I was out of my own head, and it felt so good to move my body. While I still suffer from anxiety, yoga has given me tools to help.
Every time I left class, I felt like it was my fresh start to my day. This is where the Fresh Start name came from. I want to be a place where people can get their fresh start.
I always say you never regret yoga.
Opening a business is a big decision; what motivated you to take the plunge?
I have known since I was a child that I wanted to work in the personal fitness space. I had been teaching yoga at another studio for quite some time and always thought about how cool it would be to open a studio of my own.
The current Fresh Start space became available, and I knew I had to give it a chance.
I didn’t ever want to look back and think, “what if?”
As a first-time business owner, what have been your biggest challenges for far, and how did you overcome them?
My biggest challenge has been learning how to run a business – I am still learning every day.
I had to build confidence to be the best owner I could be. I almost talked myself out of it several times. Support from my friends, family, and Operation Melt coaching has helped me conquer my fears.
What goal success tips and techniques have worked well for you that you would like to share with my readers?
Writing down your goals! Seeing a goal on paper makes it that much more real.
Keep your goals visible – it can be a vision board or even as simple as a PostIt note on the mirror reminding yourself you’ve got this. It feels so good to mark something off your list.
Stay true to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up if something takes a little longer than you thought. As long as you stay focused, you will get there!
Try to stay consistent, and it will pay off. We are humans, and we have to remember that.

I honestly never thought I would be here following my dream. It is scary, and I feel out of my comfort zone more often than not. But the rewards are so worth it!

Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928–May 28, 2014) considers what that means and what it takes in a wonderful 1983 interview, included in Black Women Writers at Work (public library).

She reflects:
I try to live what I consider a “poetic existence.” That means I take responsibility for the air I breathe and the space I take up. I try to be immediate, to be totally present for all my work.
[…]
My responsibility as a writer is to be as good as I can be at my craft. So I study my craft… Learning the craft, understanding what language can do, gaining control of the language, enables one to make people weep, make them laugh, even make them go to war. You can do this by learning how to harness the power of the word. So studying my craft is one of my responsibilities. The other is to be as good a human being as I possibly can be so that once I have achieved control of the language, I don’t force my weaknesses on a public who might then pick them up and abuse themselves.
With an eye to the abiding mystery of our creative gifts, she adds:
I believe talent is like electricity. We don’t understand electricity. We use it. Electricity makes no judgment. You can plug into it and light up a lamp, keep a heart pump going, light a cathedral, or you can electrocute a person with it. Electricity will do all that. It makes no judgment. I think talent is like that. I believe every person is born with talent.
When asked how she fits her art into her life, Angelou responds:
Writing is a part of my life; cooking is a part of my life. Making love is a part of my life; walking down the street is a part of it. Writing demands more time, but it takes from all of these other activities. They all feed into the writing. I think it’s dangerous to concern oneself too damned much with “being an artist.” It’s more important to get the work done. You don’t have to concern yourself with it, just get it done. The pondering pose — the back of the hand glued against the forehead — is baloney. People spend more time posing than getting the work done. The work is all there is. And when it’s done, then you can laugh, have a pot of beans, stroke some child’s head, or skip down the street.
Bad bosses may make good TV and movie villains. It’s true. But as an entrepreneur with dreams of success, you don’t want them to play starring roles in your company’s show. Unfortunately, many toxic leaders are also very crafty. If you’re not attuned to their subtle negativity, you might overlook problems and end up courting significant consequences.
As an entrepreneur, you know that your team is the backbone of your business. That’s why it is important to pay attention to the dynamics between your employees and their supervisors. If you have a toxic manager on your hands, it could spell disaster for your company. Professionals leaving their job due to a poor supervisor is not just a theoretical problem; many have left their jobs because they felt disrespected.
Don’t let a toxic leader bring down your business. Keep an eye out for these warning signs and nip them in the bud before it’s too late. Trying to replace talent is challenging in any market. Additionally, if your startup has a reputation for being a difficult workplace, it will be harder to attract and keep top talent.
The good news is that it’s possible to spot early warning signs of toxic leadership in your midst. Just remember to look beyond the obvious. It’s a piece of cake to notice a firebrand who scares direct reports or someone who’s impolite, vulgar, or rude. Yet it’s also important to watch for the following low-level indicators of negativity among your executives and managers. That way, you can intervene quickly and either coach the coachable or let go of the irredeemable.
1. They Never Take Ownership Of Errors
The blame game is a real issue in many offices. That isn’t good if you have a director or supervisor who always points fingers. It means you can never get to the root of any problem so that it can be fixed.
Many bad leaders are good at blaming people who are unfavored or not well-known. For instance, a supervisor might blame errors on newer or younger employees. These employees may not understand how to speak up for themselves and maybe gaslighted into believing they are at fault. As a result, the toxic leader skirts any responsibility and the employee feels guilty for no reason.
To avoid allowing this kind of behavior, practice total accountability. Start by making yourself the role model, so everyone knows that making mistakes is acceptable as long as you learn from them and try to avoid making the same mistake twice. Clear transparency is important in leadership, especially when things don’t go as planned. Leaders need to take responsibility for their actions and admit when they are wrong. This allows for a culture of trust and openness within the company.

2. They Like To Play The Gossip Game
Gossiping negatively is a destructive behavior that can be especially harmful when it comes from a manager. Not only does it spread quickly and ruin reputations, but it also does a disservice to the company. Ironically, despite their negative impact, toxic managers who engage in gossip may be well-liked because they always seem to have the latest information.
It would help if you acted when you realized that you have a gossiper in a leadership role. Gossiping pits team members against each other and allows cliques to form. This can destroy a healthy corporate culture and cause rifts between people and departments. Eventually, the rifts will impact your work on behalf of clients or customers.
Gossip can be a destructive force in the workplace, but it’s challenging to stop it once it starts. Bring attention to the issue and suggest alternative behaviors, such as expressing gratitude and appreciation. Focusing on these positive emotions can help slow the spread of negativity and mistreatment in the office.
3. They Show Their Bias Against Particular Employees
As a leader, you’ll always have employees who are better performers than others. Typically, they’re your go-to team members for important projects and you hope they’ll stick around to be tomorrow’s leaders. Yet it would help if you did more than shower them with all your attention since that’s what bad bosses do.
A poor manager will focus all coaching and mentoring efforts on one or two favorite employees and ignore the rest. While this makes sense and is natural in one way, it alienates most of the team and prevents others from stretching their wings. That’s not good. Employees may initially have steeper learning curves but eventually become superstars with enough support.
Keep a close eye on your direct reports, who are your leaders. Do they bypass other employees for assignments, including smaller tasks that could serve as learning opportunities? You may have to intervene and insist that the work be completed more fairly. Ensure the leader doesn’t sabotage your request by withholding information to prove you wrong.
Toxicity has no place in your startup. It’s that simple. When you see it, put an end to it. Thanks to your diligence, your culture and your brand will be much better off.
We’ve covered that I love the design: It’s sleek and unsuspecting with a beige exterior that blend in with any surrounding decor. I enjoy the optional glowing light that indicates how clean your air is (measuring the current concentration of PM2.5 particles), showing blue for good quality (0-15), green when moderate (16-35), yellow when unhealthy (36-75), and red when very unhealthy (76 or higher). When I first plugged mine in, it indicated that my air was unhealthy (42)—and I was quite impressed by the speed at which the device cleared the air. It took less than 10 minutes to bring it down to 1.
For reference, PM2.5 measurement tells you the amount of matter in the air measuring 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter. We’ll note, there are other models (from this brand included) that offer additional air quality readings, such as PM10 (particles as small as 10 microns), VOC, CO, and CO2. Others even measure humidity and temperature. If those details are important to you, or you’re looking for something a bit less expensive, you might consider another device, such as those listed below.
Media often dramatizes dyslexia as a rare condition when, in reality, nearly 20% of the United States population has a learning disability affecting how their brain processes language.
Catching dyslexia as early as possible benefits students both academically and socially. However, understanding best practices for diagnosis, contacting the right professionals, and helping parents understand why their child should undergo assessment may prove difficult. Learn more about this process and plan steps for students you suspect would benefit from professional evaluation.
Who Is Involved in Diagnosing Dyslexia?
Diagnosing a learning disability is a multi-step process that includes a student’s parents, teachers, and either the school psychologist or a professional in private practice outside the school system.
The school psychologist: This professional will interview your child about their difficulties with reading or comprehending written language. The psychologist will also use multiple age-appropriate, research-based assessment measures like the Test of Dyslexia (TOD™) to determine your child’s reading level and pinpoint potential problems.
The educators: Educators are often the first ones to spot signs of dyslexia in a student. They can help begin the assessment process and put parents in touch with the school psychologist.
The parents: Parents who suspect dyslexia have a legal right to request an evaluation for their children through the public school system. Educators must communicate the benefit of dyslexia assessment to parents – even if the child is doing well in school.
What Should Parents Know About Dyslexia Assessments?
Parents may wonder whether assessment measures for dyslexia are accurate. Explain to them that while there is no visible sign of dyslexia or measurable test that can pinpoint it with certainty, diagnosis is a compilation of the following information:
1. The Child’s Developmental, Social, and Educational History
The diagnosing clinician needs a whole-person view of the child and their struggles with reading. Parent and teacher interviews and questionnaires can be of great benefit in determining when the student’s problems started and how they typically present. Dyslexia has a genetic component, so it’s critical to disclose whether other family members have been diagnosed or have past struggles with reading or language.
2. The Child’s Medical or Neurological Exam
It’s important to rule out medical conditions such as difficulties in hearing, vision problems, or neurological issues that may be causing dyslexia-like symptoms. Sometimes, a child can have more than one diagnosis. For example, the student may have a dual diagnosis of autism or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia.
3. The Child’s Dyslexia Assessment Scores
Formal assessments of dyslexia can confirm what the psychologist suspects after conducting parent interviews and reading teacher questionnaires. It’s important to use dyslexia measures validated by professionals and backed by the latest research to compare students to their peers.

Kiki McClellan, IFBB professional athlete, coach, and NASM certified personal trainer, says weighted hula hoops can provide a few specific benefits for your health and fitness. “Hula hooping, especially with a weighted hula hoop, can provide a low-impact cardiovascular workout. This can help to improve heart health, increase endurance, and burn calories,” she explains.
According to McClellan, a weighted hula hoop also provides resistance, for a more challenging exercise that can help build muscular endurance in the arms, shoulders, back, and core.
“Hula hooping requires balance and coordination, and using a weighted hula hoop can help to improve these skills. Hula hooping can also be a fun and enjoyable form of exercise and provide a way to release stress and tension,” she adds.
It’s worth noting that physical stress can certainly manifest on the skin, be it in the form of increased sebum production (which may lead to more breakouts), a decrease in ceramide production (which may lead to drier skin), and even slower wound-healing. All of this to say: If a CBD gummy or tincture helps you chill out at the end of the day, your skin will be just as grateful.
But CBD has also been shown to have anti-itch, anti-proliferative, and wound-healing properties when applied topically. So look for quality hemp CBD in your next face cream, face oil, or perhaps try a CBD balm.
When I look back on my life, I realize that shadow work was always there. I just didn’t see it because I had tunnel vision. When I studied cognitive neuroscience and psychology in undergrad, I learned so much about Carl Jung and his work with the unconscious mind. It came up again while I was working on my master’s degree and later when I was teaching courses as an adjunct professor at Penn State. As a result, I understood the impact of the unconscious on our body’s physiology and emotions, but I’ve never thought to use this knowledge for myself.
However, as I was researching the most effective ways to deal with stress, shadow work was staring me in the face again—I took it as a sign that I needed to learn more and really try it for myself.
I ended up reaching out to UK-based shadow worker Allison Kelsey, and I booked an appointment with her for the very next week. Kelsey and I did sessions together weekly or biweekly, for a year.
For a bit more context, “shadow” is just another term for the unconscious mind, which is at the deepest level of your psyche. It’s the moments that make up your personality. It’s the things that shape your worldview; it’s what makes you who you are as a human being.
For a lot of us, these unconscious processes are traumas. The reason this happens is something called a subconscious feedback loop. Every experience that you have is sensory—as you take in those senses, it internally creates a chemical reaction, your emotions. Those emotions create a physical reaction in your body, which is also chemical, and that physical reaction sends a chemical reaction back up to your brain in the form of a thought—that loop repeats over and over again.
For instance, many people are triggered by the holidays and spending time with their family because of unpleasant past experiences from childhood. That is your shadow: You may not even remember exactly what memory is triggering, but your body remembers.
Shadow work is the process of bringing up those memories slowly and intentionally, usually through meditation. Then, you work with a practitioner to interrupt that subconscious feedback loop and change how this memory exists in your brain. One way to do that is through breathwork because your breath can stop some of those chemicals from producing and interrupts that feedback loop in such a way that it can change the neural pathways in your brain.
During my own journey with this work, I released so much trauma and I learned more about myself than I can even begin to put into words. I was a different person within weeks. And by the end of the year, I didn’t even recognize the person that I was before.
After this journey, I started to shift my own practice to focus on shadow work. Now, I work with thousands of people every single year through group courses that I host, I speak all over the world about it, and I recently wrote a book called Shadow Work. My life is now completely different from what it was before my diagnosis. So while cancer is, in some ways, the worst thing that happened to me, it is simultaneously the best.
