  • Here’s how to make Forspoken less irritating

Here’s how to make Forspoken less irritating

    [ad_1]

So, the verdict for Forspoken is in, and it’s looking… dubious. The game, the latest tite from the developers behind Final Fantasy 15, made a lot of promises before it launched; whether it was claiming to solve the tricky proposition of open world fatigue, or making a point of pushing the PS5 as hard as possible, Forspoken had a lot to say before it launched.

Shame the game doesn’t keep up this momentum the whole time.

And, as it turns out, the game has just got quite a lot to say more generally. The core conceit of the game is that down-and-out New Yorker, Frey Holland, gets transported to an otherworld – to the magical land of Athia – where a sentient Cuff binds itself to her wrist and guides her through this peculiar fantasy. Thing is, Cuff won’t shut the hell up. Similarly to High on Life’s mouthy guns in 2022, cuff seems to think that we want incessant feedback on everything we do.

But, safe to say, a lot of players aren’t really into this. The reaction to the game’s demo (and a massive leak that kicked off jut before the game launched) has demonstrated this in no uncertain terms. And it makes sense; it requires a lot of attention to listen to your smug, somehow British, Cuff flapping its proverbial gums when all you’re trying to do is set fire to some weird magical alligator or something.

Make a note of this menu.

So you’ll be pleased to know you can turn the frequency of Cuff’s smart alec quips down – or, should you prefer, turn it off entirely. Thank Christ, right?

By hitting pause and heading into the menus, you can find a little sub-menu called ‘Cuff Settings’. In here, you’ve got a series of options, including toggles to determine whether or not Cuff shows you where to go in-game, and options to determine how often Cuff talks to you. If you knock the latter down to ‘minimal’, cuff will only kick off with dialogue that’s directly related to the story. You can turn the frequency up, too, but we can’t really report on that option because we’ve avoided that one like the plague.

There, right at the front, is Cuff. Shut up, Cuff.

Knocking it down means there’ll be less ‘banter’ between it and Frey as your protagonist parkours her way around the lush world of Athia, and less verbal fencing between the two unlikely allies. For you, player, that means fewer headaches and more headspace to dedicate to the game’s actually-not-that-bad combat.

Accessibility options like this in games are only good things; whether it’s the option to gag irritating NPCs like this, or the option to wholly remove spiders in games, we’re happy to see this get more and more common. Platform holders are making moves into accessibility; the PlayStation 5’s baked-in options and Xbox’s amazing adaptive controller are all part of the picture, and we hope things keep getting better as the industry continues to mature.

Forspoken is out now on PS5 and PC.

  • Today’s Wordle Answer (#584) – January 24, 2023

    Today’s Wordle Answer (#584) – January 24, 2023

    [ad_1]

It’s Tuesday, January 24, and we’re back with another edition of our Wordle guides. Unlike last week, today’s answer is relatively simple and a word that every player has used or heard of. There are really no uncommon letters, which usually results in an easy answer. However, sometimes the easiest words give players the toughest time due to how obvious they can be.

If you haven’t started the January 24 Wordle yet, you can check out our list of recommended starting words to give yourself an advantage before you’ve begun. However, if you’re already a few guesses deep and you’re on this guide, then you’re likely looking for a lifeline so your streak doesn’t end. Fortunately, we’re here to provide that lifeline and offer some hints that should allow players to easier guess the answer. Below, players will see two hints for today’s Wordle in addition to the full answer that’s located further down in the guide.

    Today’s Wordle Answer – January 24, 2023

We’ll begin with two hints that directly relate to the Wordle answer but won’t immediately give the word away.

    • Hint 1: This word can be defined as the process of determining the total number of something. You often do this in a math class or when trying to figure out how much you spent on a certain item. The word also has a definition with the synonym “include.”
    • Hint 2: This word has two vowels, both in the middle of the word. There are no repeating letters in this word. The word starts with the letter “c.”

If you weren’t able to guess the answer from our hints, then fear not, as we have the full answer right here. The full answer to the January 24 Wordle is… “count.” Certainly not a difficult word by any means, but the back-to-back vowels could be the source of some frustration. Hopefully, every player was able to get the Wordle correct and continue their streak. Check back tomorrow for another edition of our Wordle guides.

You Can Now Play as Isaac Clarke in Fortnite

    [ad_1]

    News

Comes with your very own RIG.

Ahead of the Dead Space Remake release this week, Epic Games has just announced a new Dead Space-themed cosmetic pack for Fortnite. The pack costs $12, and comes with an Isaac Clarke skin, two back blings, a Plasma Cutter-style pickaxe, as well as a model of the iconic USG Ishimura.

In addition to that, purchasers will also get access to the Strange Transmissions quest pack, which allows players to complete quests in-game to earn even more V-Bucks as they play. Overall, it offers pretty good value for a bundle, and is certainly worth considering if you’re spending money on Fortnite already anyway.

Isaac Clarke joins Fortnite as part of the game’s Gaming Legends lineup, which already includes icons like Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, and Geralt from The Witcher.

Fortnite is now available on PC and consoles.

Holiday Matsuri is one of the coolest cosplay shows on the North American calendar. Taking place in Florida in December, the location means that instead of shivering inside a convention centre somewhere freezing their asses off, attendees are instead free to hit the pool, and the timing means we get to see a bunch of neat holiday-themed takes on costumes.

The 2019 edition (which we covered in early 2020) was one of the last before the pandemic hit, and while the event returned in 2021 it wasn’t until the most recent show that things really got back in their stride.

In this gallery you’ll find both a music video and collection of photos of the 2022 event, all taken by Mineralblu. Each cosplayer’s social media, character and series details are watermarked on the image.

GTA 5 Exploit is Soft Locking Player Accounts, Rockstar Promises Fix – IGN

    [ad_1]

Rockstar says it’s preparing a title update for Grand Theft Auto Online in response to an exploit that is effectively locking some players out of the popular multiplayer game.

First spotted late last week, the remote code execution exploit [RCE] allows cheaters to effectively corrupt accounts from afar. Players affected by the exploit will finding themselves permanently trapped in Grand Theft Auto’s loading screen.

RCEs have been an ongoing concern in several multiplayer games, most notably Dark Souls, which saw its PvP servers shut down for months due to the issue. While a firewall rule can help, fans are currently being encouraged to take a break since RCE expoits can be quite dangerous, allowing hackers to do significant damage to a player’s PC from afar.

In a tweet earlier this afternoon, Rockstar said that it’s aware of the exploit and that it’s preparing a security-related title update. It encouraged players to reach out to the studio’s support page if they run into additional problems.

While Rockstar didn’t reveal when the promised title update would be released, fans can likely expect it soon due to the severity of the exploit.

  • Forspoken Review – Forsaken

    Forspoken Review – Forsaken

    [ad_1]

Though it takes inspiration from isekai–stories in which people from Earth are transported to and become trapped in a fantastical world (think Alice in Wonderland but Japanese)–Forspoken ultimately doesn’t understand what makes that genre so popular. Instead, it tells a largely forgettable story that sets up major stakes but fails to offer a compelling reason for why the player should care. Luminous Productions’ action-RPG feels great when it allows you to really stretch your legs and magically parkour across its fantasy landscape, but combat is clunky and regular exposition too often stalls the action.

In Forspoken, protagonist Frey finds herself trapped in the magic-filled world of Athia after stumbling through a portal. There, she bonds with a sentient brace she nicknames Cuff and then encounters a group of survivors living in the last city that’s free from the effects of a dangerous miasma. This blight, which Frey calls the Break, covers the land and transforms living creatures into mutated monsters. Frey is the only exception, making her an ideal candidate for exploring the Break, finding its source, and destroying it. The whole situation is an intriguing narrative setup but boring or unlikable characters let it down. It’s difficult to like the standoffish and stubborn Frey, the incessantly sarcastic Cuff (who regularly quips in Frey’s ear like a discount JARVIS), or any of the survivors who are all too eager to completely rely on Frey’s protection from the Break while also asking her to complete boring optional tasks like going on a tour of a lifeless hub or petting a bunch of sheep.

    Now Playing: Forspoken Video Review

Forspoken’s story is one about belonging–finding a place you want to stay and a people you wish to protect. Like any isekai protagonist worth their salt, Frey is initially resistant to her new surroundings before discovering that she’s actually ideally suited to the world she’s found herself trapped in. However, it’s not a world that the game is able to adequately convince the player of wanting to stay in and protect. The emotional connection Forspoken tries to establish to incentivize the player to take action–to help the people that need Frey’s help–is deeply uninteresting and oftentimes head-scratching and odd. The characters don’t take the threat of Athia’s imminent destruction very seriously and any tension that comes from their perilous existence is repeatedly undermined by meaningless busywork they want you to do. The characters themselves are also incredibly plain with two-dimensional personalities. They have no real convictions or anything interesting to say.

The facial expressions of the people in Athia are stilted and uncomfortable, which already creates a bit of a disconnect with the emotional core of Forspoken’s story. But the issue is exacerbated by how these people are characterized and used to inspire Frey. We see Frey contemplate murderous vengeance over the death of a survivor she’d only just met, and feel guilty over belittling someone she has the slimmest of connections to. These people aren’t fleshed out in Forspoken’s story, and so the way they emotionally manipulate Frey isn’t all that believable or fulfilling to watch. My playthrough was filled with me constantly asking, “Yes, but why should Frey care?” and Forspoken never delivered a satisfying answer to the question.

With not much keeping you within the last bastion of human life in Athia, you’re encouraged to go out and explore the wider world, sprinting over fields with Frey’s parkour abilities and blasting enemies away with explosive magic. Frey zips through the environment with stylish flips and jumps, moving so quickly that she skids to a halt. This does create an enjoyable fluidity to movement and it’s exhilarating to feel the world speed past you. Still, the lack of precision makes platforming or levels within enclosed spaces frustratingly difficult. More than a few times, I found myself accidentally jetting past an item I wanted to pick up, or unintentionally racing up the wall of a building. Technically, you can instantly shut off Frey’s magical parkour by pressing the button that puts her into a normal sprint–apparently, the two actions cancel each other out because using them both at once causes Frey to come to an abrupt halt. It’s an awkward workaround to the problem, however, and not one easy to pull off in the midst of a fight.

Whereas Forspoken’s movement mechanics encourage a wilder, freeform style of engaging with the world, combat pushes you toward precision. There’s a precise timing needed to pull off dodges and parries, and several of Frey’s magic spells lend themselves to careful placement and strategic use–that’s difficult to do when racing around the environment. As a result, Forspoken feels disjointed as the moments of exploration and navigation come into conflict with combat. Instead of complementing each other, these two parts of the game are actively fighting one another. They never come together into a cohesive whole.

Forspoken’s movement is far more fun, especially in the latter half of the game

Frey can let loose a wide variety of bombastic spells and magical abilities, all of which are visually impressive displays. She can crush enemies with massive boulders, engulf whole groups in a molten eruption, or fry everything around her with brilliant green lightning. It all looks very cool, but there’s not much in the way of strategy to it. Cuff can inform Frey what flavor of her magic is most effective against a particular enemy, and then all you have to do is switch to that element and keep tossing out attacks. Early into the game, you encounter enemy types that encourage you to think a bit beyond that–enemies who can block magic from the front or foes who can’t be damaged until you destroy their wings, for example–but they only really appear in the first quarter of the story. After that, most enemies are bullet sponges designed to create challenge in how much of a magical beating they can take. It’s not hard to switch magic types to mindlessly exploit weaknesses and so combat–though visually impressive–quickly loses all sense of enjoyment.

Forspoken’s movement is far more fun, especially in the latter half of the game when you start unlocking and chaining new mechanics that increase the variety of ways that Frey can journey across Athia, like slingshotting herself through the air with a flaming whip or manipulating gravity to skate across the water. Even if there’s nowhere interesting to go in Forspoken–its open world is dotted with an assortment of run-of-the-mill side quests like time-limited parkour challenges and photo ops–there’s fun to be had in the act of simply getting to your next main story mission. The quiet hum of Forspoken’s excellent soundtrack worms its way into your ears while you’re racing through the empty, yet beautiful, landscapes. I’m absentmindedly humming its main theme even now.

Exposition regularly cuts into the experience, however. Frey and Cuff quip a lot, and though Cuff does have a few humorous one-liners and insightful commentary on the world of Athia over the course of the story, Frey…does not. Frey is one of the weakest parts of Forspoken. Her characterization resembles the narrative arc of ’90s and early 2000s isekai light novels, manga, and anime, which largely focused on female protagonists becoming trapped in another world. There, they’d discover their innate talents translated into power, which they’d wield in a quest that awarded them personal agency and self-confidence. But Frey deviates from these isekai protagonists. She’s inherently unlikable for most of Forspoken’s story, with the game forcing her through her transformation from selfish sorcerer to defiant hero over the course of a single chapter of lengthy exposition. I didn’t buy into her heroic shift in the final moments of the game–it felt like the storyline was going through the motions without taking the necessary steps to ensure Frey’s emotional and mental development made sense.

As a character, Frey feels flat. Our introduction to her is seeing her on the wrong side of a criminal court case, and that she views the world around her with jaded exasperation–she pushes people away because she’s an abandoned orphan and believes no one wants her. Frey carries that disposition throughout most of the game and it’s the primary means by which she views every aspect of Athia, and thus we the player are able to see it. Forspoken doesn’t do anything to celebrate Frey as someone who is Black or a woman or anything else about her. The game posits that the only perspective worth noting from Frey is that of an orphan and that restriction not only stunts the character growth she can achieve, it also just gets stale after a few hours.

Forspoken is a tricky game to recommend. The lore of its world is interesting but delivered in a stilted expository manner, and the freeing sensation of taking off across the landscape in a magically-propelled sprint is sullied by the knowledge that there’s nowhere to go or anything fun to do. Combat is visually impressive but not all that engaging, and the excellent sound design and the catchy musical score are regularly undermined by unfunny quips from an unlikable protagonist. I enjoyed parts of it, but too often my fun was dragged to an unrewarding halt.

Reviews Featuring ‘Persona 3 Portable’ & ‘NeverAwake’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 23rd, 2023. In today’s article, we’ve got a trio of reviews for you. We’ve got my thoughts on Persona 3 Portable and NeverAwake, while our pal Mikhail has a slick write-up of the excellent A Space for the Unbound. After that, we’ve got some new releases to check out, plus the usual lists of new and outgoing sales. Let’s get this party started!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

    Persona 3 Portable ($19.99)

So hey, I’m the person that likes Persona 3 best out of the last three games in the series. It’s me, I did it. I like the characters, I like their arcs, I like the main plot, and I like the friction in the game that was smoothed out of its follow-ups. It has a gutsy ending, and I think it’s a really cool game. I gave Persona 5 Royal a perfect five, so I guess that’s it then. Persona 3, five out of five, pack it up and head home.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. There are three versions of Persona 3, you see. I guess we can call this the fourth. First there was Persona 3 for PlayStation 2. Never buy the first version of a modern Persona game, friends. The following year saw the release of Persona 3 FES for the PlayStation 2. It added a wholly unnecessary epilogue called The Answer which, as after-the-fact epilogues often do, messed with the excellent ending of the base game. It also added some story bits to the main game, let you take Koromaru for walks, and tossed in some extra content and options here and there. Nothing from the original game was left behind in the process. It’s a great way to play Persona 3.

A couple of years later, Atlus decided to bring out a version of Persona 3 for the highly successful PlayStation Portable. While the impressive handheld often punched well above its weight, it didn’t have quite enough power or disc space for direct PlayStation 2 ports. So Atlus cut back on some elements of the original game, removing animated cut-scenes and swapping out the free-roaming movement for a more visual novel-like presentation. It also removed the epilogue from FES, while at the same time adding a new female version of the main character to give you a different perspective on the story complete with new social links. There were also a number of genuinely helpful quality of life improvements, like giving you the option of direct control over your party members.

That makes porting the game to modern consoles a tough matter. You can either bring over the PlayStation 2 FES and lose the female main character and all of the gameplay improvements of the PlayStation Portable version, or you can bring over Persona 3 Portable and lose both The Answer and the superior presentation of the PlayStation 2 game. There probably isn’t a choice here that will please everyone short of perhaps remaking the game so that it has the best of both worlds. Atlus has opted for Persona 3 Portable, upscaling the visuals and giving it a few tweaks to update it that much more.

I didn’t mind the sacrifices Persona 3 Portable made in its time and place too much, but that was more than a dozen years ago. I wish I could say I could look past the cutbacks, but I can’t. Not completely. It’s less atmospheric. You don’t feel the locations as well in Portable. The characters feel considerably less expressive. On top of all of that, the upscaling done on the backgrounds here doesn’t look very good. This may well be the worst I have ever seen any version of Persona 3 look. I love Persona 3, and I find it quite likely that for many new fans of the series, this will be their first brush with this entry, and frankly I think it deserved better.

That said, at its core this is still Persona 3. Still the same great characters, fascinating plot, challenging bosses, and enjoyable gameplay mechanics. Pushing farther and farther into the towering Tartarus is very satisfying, and you truly feel like you’re ascending an impossibly large dungeon piece by piece. There are lots of Social Links to develop, and some of the stories that spring from them are superb. The overall plot is twisty and at times heart-wrenching, and the ending is quite poignant. It’s a long haul to reach that ending, but I belive such journeys are best made on a handheld. The new quick save feature is perhaps the best new addition for this port, allowing you to quickly end your session whenever you might need to.

The trimmed-down-for-PSP presentation of Persona 3 Portable was an overall detriment to the game in 2009/2010, and it hurts it even more in 2023. Some nasty upscaling works against the stylish UI and excellent character art, and I do at least wish the removed animated cut-scenes had been reinstated for this version. Even with all of that in mind, this is still a great JRPG. Challenging, compelling gameplay mechanics combined with a strong story and a fantastic soundtrack make this an easy pick-up for fans of the genre and series alike, even if one can’t help but wish for a less compromised version.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    NeverAwake ($24.99)

There’s no doubt about it, NeverAwake is a very cool shooting game. I haven’t played anything else quite like it, and the most surprising thing is that for all of the unusual things it does, all of it works really well. The premise involves a girl who can’t wake up, but we’re in the dark about what happened to her at the outset. We have to navigate her nightmares, picking up souls and defeating the terrors that lurk within. The game spans more than eighty levels, which sounds like an absolutely bonkers number for a shooting game, but like I said, NeverAwake is a bit different from the norm.

The levels in NeverAwake are pretty short on the whole. After a couple of minutes at the most, they’ll loop back around to the start. Your goal isn’t to play through them, though. No, your goal is to gather up enough souls to bring your meter to 100%, a process that may take you less than a single lap if you know what you’re doing. Souls are often dropped by defeated enemies, but you’ll sometimes need to extract them by shooting a giant crystal or by defeating a boss. Clearing levels faster earns you better rewards and gives you a better place on the leaderboards.

As in a standard shoot-em-up, the levels scroll on their own. The controls are more akin to a twin-stick shooter, however. Use the left stick to move, the right to fire your regular attack, the left trigger for a useful dash, and the right trigger to use your equipped special attack. You can turn on an assist that helps you aim, or you can just go it on your own. As you play you’ll unlock various extra special attacks and gear pieces that convey a number of benefits, which you can buy with souls and equip in whatever combinations you desire. You’ll also unlock some other extras, with things being handed out to you at a steady pace to keep things lively. Oh, and you’ll also slowly be fed the game’s plot, which is rather intriguing.

NeverAwake plays well, has a fascinating, strong sense of style, and is very unique. Its brief levels meant I ended up devouring the game like a bowl of popcorn, and I had a blast with every minute of it. The story and sense of wonder at what bizarre situation I would wade into next kept me going to the end, and the unlockable challenges and leaderboards brought me back for more still. If you like shooting games, action games, or twin-stick shooters, you’ll want to put NeverAwake on your shopping list.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

A Space for the Unbound ($19.99)

A Space for the Unbound from Mojiken and Toge Productions caught my eye ever since its original reveal. I’m a sucker for narrative driven adventures set in small towns, and the pixel art aesthetic in A Space for the Unbound was just the icing on the cake in every trailer. It features two high schoolers, supernatural abilities, secrets, the end of the world, and more. This is also the first game I’ve played since Sega’s Lost Judgment to tackle some important topics well.

Since A Space for the Unbound is a story-driven experience, I don’t want to ruin any of the surprises or story. I was surprised and pleased with how well it handled many important topics. In its dozen or so hours of runtime, I only found myself feeling annoyed with a few portions of the middle of the experience. I often find myself being let down by the gameplay portion of these kinds of games, and while that aspect is straightforward, it could’ve used some fine-tuning in its pacing there. The story itself elevates this quite a bit, and that’s what makes this an essential.

Visually, A Space for the Unbound is mostly amazing. The pixel art is gorgeous, and a lot of the animations and environments look brilliant. Some elements look a bit off compared to how well-designed everything else is in A Space for the Unbound. On the performance side of things, A Space for the Unbound isn’t perfect on Nintendo Switch, but the performance issues I ran into weren’t a dealbreaker.

One aspect I wanted to highlight for the Switch port of A Space for the Unbound is the support for the Switch’s touchscreen. I love when you can progress dialogue by tapping the screen in handheld mode, and A Space for the Unbound having support for it was great. A Space for the Unbound also looks sublime on the Switch’s OLED screen despite the lower resolution. This is definitely a game worth grabbing a physical release for on Nintendo Switch.

While a few of the gameplay portions in the middle dragged a bit too much, A Space for the Unbound is one of the best narrative driven indie games I’ve played. Despite not having been to Indonesia which inspires the setting, the storytelling, characters, and atmosphere all felt perfect. It reminded me of how I felt playing The Kids We Were and Persona 4 Golden in that sense. If you enjoy memorable stories and great characters, A Space for the Unbound is an easy recommendation on Nintendo Switch. -Mikhail Madnani

    New Releases

    Demolish & Build Classic ($14.99)

Here’s another one from Ultimate Games. You take charge of a construction and demolition company and need to take on various jobs to earn money and grow. There are a number of machines to use, an open world you can explore, a number of missions to complete, and a few different gameplay mechanics to deal with. There’s a certain pleasure to breaking things in any game, and I’d imagine this is no different in that regard.

    Kindergarten Buddy Edition ($19.99)

This packs both Kindergarten and Kindergarten 2 into one convenient package, bringing the games to the Nintendo Switch for the first time. These games are absolutely beloved by folks over on Steam, so I’d imagine they will go over fine with the Switch crowd too. You’re in kindergarten, reliving the same day again and again. Interact with the teachers and other students, explore when and where you can, and just see what weird stuff you can find. Be advised that it gets a little bloody, and there’s a lot of crude humor and such. Just like a real kindergarten.

    Magic Klondike ($4.99)

This is just a basic Klondike solitaire game that allows you to pick from a variety of card backs and table themes. I’m not sure if anyone needs another Klondike solitaire game at this point, and there are better options if you’re looking for your first one on the system.

    Elta7 ($5.49)

This is a roguelite shooter that looks to have twin-stick controls. It seems to have the usual assortment of features for a game of this sort, with its primary distinguishing feature being its futuristic setting that sees you as part of a resistance against an oppressive force known as Skynet. With a premise as original as that, I can’t really see how it could go wrong.

    Beach Cafe: Caribbean Sand ($3.99)

Cooking & Publishing has a low-cost escape room-style adventure game for us today. It is set in an abandoned beach cafe and sees you investigating the disappearance of your grandfather. I’ll give them the smallest benefit of the doubt that this isn’t just a template from the Unity Asset Store flipped onto the eShop, but it doesn’t look much better than that.

    Frido ($4.99)

A fairly straightforward 3D platformer with ten stages to play. It doesn’t seem to be of the highest quality, but I suppose for the price it’s asking one can expect a little bit of roughness. You play as a robot time traveler who is trying to return to its own time, which is a cute enough premise.

    Santa Claus Goblins Attack ($9.99)

Alright, who ordered the month-late bullet hell shoot-em-up with Santa Claus in an old war plane battling an army of goblins? Because that is an oddly specific thing to ask for, but here it is. Other than the bizarre premise, this is a fairly basic vertically-scrolling shooter that features an upgrade system to power up your weapons and shields as you go. I can’t imagine buying or playing this with the wealth of top-tier shooters on the platform, but I’m sure it will be someone’s jam.

  • Top Smash Ultimate Player Throws Controller At Tournament, Sparks ‘Privilege’ Discourse

Top Smash Ultimate Player Throws Controller At Tournament, Sparks ‘Privilege’ Discourse

    [ad_1]

Genesis 9, a major fighting game tournament, took place over the weekend. There were stellar combos and massive upsets as the supermajor event for Super Smash Bros. Melee and Ultimate concluded on January 22. Unfortunately, while the tournament was underway, one of Canada’s top Kazuya players, Michael “Riddles” Kim, sparked some heated discourse in Ultimate’s community around “top player privilege” and “ego problems” when he threw his controller after losing a match.

Considered one of the best Kazuya and Terry mains in Canada, Riddles is ranked ninth in all of North America. A member of the esports organization Team Liquid, Riddles has placed in the top 10 at just about every tournament he’s competed in, with his last first-place win being at the November 2022 Path to Glory tournament in Saskatchewan where he took home approximately $11,000 alongside the top spot. In short, the Super Smash Bros. community sees Riddles as goated. So, knowing he was entering Genesis 9, a California tournament stacked to the brim with top-tier talents such as Steve player acola and Marth main MKLeo, his ardent fans and interested onlookers were expecting him to perform. He did, but not to the level he, or the game’s community, might’ve hoped for.

Riddles found himself in the losers’ bracket after losing a close set against Palutena player Chase. Riddles would win the next two matches in that bracket, only to wind up facing off against France’s Lucina main, Nassim “Leon” Laib. The bout started heavily in Riddles’ favor. However, Leon had Riddles’ number on speed dial, as Leon switched to Chrom and gave Riddles little room to breathe.

It all came to a head when, in the last bout, Leon absolutely bodied Riddles in spectacular fashion. Riddles lost that match. After sitting in his chair for a while, the frustration clearly visible on his face and his opponent no longer on screen, Riddles threw his controller down hard before leaving the arena.

Folks were perplexed by the upset as Riddles was a top seed, meaning he was expected to place pretty high. Leon, however, is ranked 77th. The odds were ever in Riddles’ favor, as evidenced on the faces of those around the two players. Aside from congratulating Leon on his victory, most people were stunned by what happened. There were a few taking pictures of Riddles sulking in his chair, but most of everyone else in the immediate vicinity was shooketh.

    ScreenKO

It’s this brief moment that has ignited the Super Smash Bros. community into discoursing about popping off in a professional setting.

“You throw the controller,” one tweeter said to Riddles in all caps. “Do you know how much you make people suffer? You lost [and] got outplayed by a neutral character. You just cheese people at 0 so [fuck] off.”

“It’s called holding people accountable,” another tweeter said. “Something this community needs more of actually.”

“It doesn’t matter if he is humble, he still had that moment,” a third tweeter said. “If you give him a pass now, 9 times outta 10, it’ll happen again. Just stop fam lmao. Everyone has those moments, we get it, but shrugging it off like this just shows why top player privilege is a thing.”

The comments on the above YouTube video aren’t much better, with some agreeing Riddles “has no right to be salty or rage” and that he’s “a little baby” who needs to “man up.” Others laughed at the incident, while a few folks memed his name, calling him “Shittles” instead. One person even said Riddles has “insane ego problems” for reacting this way. Sheesh.

This is because Riddles mains Kazuya Mishima, one of Tekken’s protagonists, the 81st combatant part of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Fighters Pass Vol. 2, and a notorious character in the game’s scene. Kazuya is a combo-heavy fighter in Ultimate, primarily relying on his electric wind god fist to stun his opponents and rack up some heavy damage. Kazuya, and this stun move especially, have been thorns in the community’s side, with Ultimate players regularly asking for Kazuya (as well as Steve from Minecraft) to get banned from tournament use. In short, Riddles receives a lot of hate because of the character he plays, and his loss to Leon and the resulting explosion on camera, was an excuse to pile on—to the point that Riddles ended up deactivating his Twitter account.

Kotaku reached out to Riddles for comment.

In Twitter DMs with Kotaku, Leon said he was both afraid of and motivated by Riddles, ready to face him in the Genesis 9 competition. Leon didn’t anticipate beating Riddles, though, saying he was “very surprised and shocked” to do so with his secondary character, Chrom. He also wasn’t totally surprised by Riddles’ reaction to the upset after the fact, although he didn’t completely agree with his opponent’s behavior.

“[Riddles’ reaction was] completely [unwarranted] in any kind of big competition. It’s easy to see that,” Leon said. “Throwing your own controller to [release] frustration isn’t the best move, but it concerns only him and himself. As long as he respects his opponents (which was the case with me), there is nothing very disgusting [about what he did]. I would be sad and frustrated to get out of the tournament that early, too.”

Not everyone is dragging Riddles for the way he popped off at Genesis 9. Multiple top players, from former competitor Yonni to big-name player Justin Wong to Moist Esports’ Aaron Wilhite, defended Riddles’ actions. It’s kind of ironic when you think about it, as a few days before Genesis 9 kicked off, an Italian Smash player was banned from tournaments going forward after literally slapping his opponent during a livestream. Riddles, on the other hand, took his frustration out on an inanimate object and announced he would take a long break in his Discord. I’m not entirely sure what the community wants from Riddles, or top players in general, but asking that they be robots and show no emotion just ain’t it. I mean, I still occasionally throw my controllers because video games make me angry. It’s human nature, right? At least Riddles didn’t take it out on his competitor.

  • M&M’s ‘spokescandies’ controversy, explained

    M&M’s ‘spokescandies’ controversy, explained

    [ad_1]

Say goodbye to both the sexy green M&M and also her feminist, sneaker-wearing counterpart. Mars Wrigley, the maker of the colorful chocolate candies, has pulled its M&M’s ‘spokescandies’ mascots “indefinitely” from its marketing and branding. Instead, M&M’s will be represented by the real-life comedian and actress Maya Rudolph.

The news comes after a rebranding to make the characters more inclusive, and the subsequent fallout after far right conservative pundits like Fox News host Tucker Carlson condemned the change. The statement, tweeted from M&M’s official account, reads:

In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies. We weren’t sure if anyone would even notice. And we definitely didn’t think it would break the interent. But now we get it — even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing.

The befuddling chain of events has inspired an endless slew of internet commentary. At time of publication the tweet announcing the change has been quote tweeted over 14k times. The responses have ranged from plenty of anger to funny jokes. Here’s how we got to this point.

Why are the M&M’S ‘spokescandies’ leaving?

Roughly a year ago, Mars Wrigley updated the look of its M&M’s characters, when the company announced an initiative to make the mascots fit a “more dynamic, progressive world.” As part of these changes, the company introduced new designs of some of M&M’s characters and wrote weirdly elaborate backstories for others. Most notably, the company made green M&M less “sexy” by shortening her legs and replacing her high-heeled boots with sneakers.

At the time, the change prompted both criticism from feminist activists (being hot isn’t a problem unto itself) and far right conservatives who cast it as another battle in the culture wars. In Jan. 2022, Tucker Carlson criticized the rebrand during a show segment.

Carlson revisited the topic as an issue on his show more recently, and ended up reigniting the conversation around it. On the episode he said, “Woke M&M’s have returned. The green M&M got her boots back, but apparently is now a lesbian maybe? And there is also a plus-sized, obese, purple M&M.”

We don’t know why Carlson decided to talk about M&M’s again. Mars Wrigley has not made any recent changes to the M&M characters. In the show, Carlson uses two images as a reference to critique the new branding. The first is an image of brown and green M&M from 2015 and the other was of purple M&M, who was introduced back in September. None of this is new information. However, Mars Wrigley did tease that the brand would be making an appearance in the upcoming Super Bowl.

After Carlson talked about the characters again, users on TikTok began using the audio clip of his voice to make comical videos where people lip sync and imagine what it was like to be in the studio that day. One audio clip alone has been used over 9,000 times since it was published on Jan. 12; many of the TikToks using the audio clip were posted and viewed extensively last weekend.

It’s hard to say whether the social media shit storm following Carlson’s comments prompted Mars Wrigley to stop using the mascots. It’s also possible that this could be a very strange marketing ploy leading up the Super Bowl, similar to how Planters killed Mr. Peanut and replaced him with baby nut.

As for what’s next, well, Maya Rudolph expressed optimism about the brand deal to Today. “I am a lifelong lover of the candy and I feel like it’s such an honor to be asked to be part of such a legendary brand’s campaign.” Let’s just hope she doesn’t appear on stage in regular old sneakers, instead of high-heel boots.

  • Please Just Let Ashley Wield a Weapon in the RE4 Remake, I Don’t Care What

Please Just Let Ashley Wield a Weapon in the RE4 Remake, I Don’t Care What

    [ad_1]

    Features

It’s time to redeem Ashley Graham.

Anyone who played the original Resident Evil 4 is most certainly familiar with the mechanics surrounding Ashley Graham. While the remake is right around the corner, Capcom still hasn’t revealed how her sections might go, which means there is room for some hope that we’re not getting that same experience.

Newcomers to the remake will (potentially) never understand the hardship of trying to keep a helpless blonde out of the clutches of the enemy while being swarmed. But even as a big fan of the original, I don’t want that back. I’d love a new experience that fixes some of the previous frustrating features.

To that end, I just want Ashley to be able to wield some kind of weaponry. It doesn’t have to be guns or anything completely destructive on its own, just something to assist Leon during the longer fights. From what we have seen of the remake, these fights are guaranteed, seeing as the last showcase of the game revealed that Capcom has fully recreated the initial Chainsaw Ganado section.

The downside to how cool that reveal was is that it might also mean the return of the original’s later section of the game, where Leon has to snipe at cultists while Ashley stands there helplessly in the distance. If you’ve never played Resident Evil 4, that bit is just as not fun as it sounds. It would be vastly improved if it is just updated so that she can fend them off even a little while Leon snipes.

Even for story reasons, it doesn’t make sense why a complete badass like Leon Kennedy wouldn’t try to teach Ashley at least the basics of defending herself. It’s not like they suffer from a lack of likely weapons, either; most of the Ganado enemies carry farm tools that could be perfect melee options. If it’s a matter of keeping Ashley grounded, the weapons can just break after a certain amount of hits like Dead Rising.

It’s not like this would be a foreign concept to Resident Evil. In Revelations 2, Claire’s companion Moira Burton doesn’t fight with guns but instead wields a crowbar. She’s not a fighter on the same level as Claire, but she also isn’t helpless (or useless, in Ashley’s case). On the alternative side of that story, Barry Burton teams up with Natalia Korda, who is a little girl. However, this little girl can wield bricks and smash zombies with them in a pinch. These bricks have limited durability, so you get about one hit before they break, making them a quick escape weapon.

    Moira in Resident Evil Revelations
Image Source: Capcom via Resident Evil Wiki

This isn’t even a crazy suggestion for the whole partner character aspect. Ever since Resident Evil 4, every game that gives a partner features either a badass on your same level or someone at least able to defend themselves to some degree. There’s no reason to go backward. It was a jarring difference going into Resident Evil 5 and finding out the partner character, Sheva Alomar, was about as deadly as Chris Redfield.

With time still to go until the Resident Evil 4 remake hits shelves, there is plenty of time left to show off how things are different this time around while still maintaining what made the original so great. To that end, Capcom, please don’t give us the same damsel in distress moments with Ashley Graham.

Or, if you insist on keeping her mechanics unchanged, don’t you dare remove her suplex glitch. If nothing else, give the poor girl the chance to fling Ganados on their head like a petite Brock Lesnar in glorious 4K.

  • PlayStation VR2 Launch Window Game, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, Delayed To March

PlayStation VR2 Launch Window Game, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, Delayed To March

    [ad_1]

The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR has been delayed.

PlayStation revealed 11 new PlayStation VR2 games back in November, including a new entry in Supermassive Games’ The Dark Pictures anthology series called Switchback VR. Supermassive released Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, a PlayStation VR rail shooter, in 2016, and Switchback VR is its spiritual successor. When Switchback VR was revealed late last year, there wasn’t an official release date attached to it – PlayStation just referred to it as a PSVR2 launch window title.

Nonetheless, Supermassive Games will release Switchback VR later than expected, as it has been delayed to March 16. It’s a short delay, given that PSVR2 launches on February 22, and any game in its launch window was likely due around then. As for why, Supermassive Games says it needs more time to polish the rail shooter.

“Switchback VR is Supermassive Games’ most ambitious VR project to date, taking players through 5 extensive worlds that branch through various terror filled rollercoaster routes based on the Dark Pictures franchise,” a message from the Switchback VR team reads. “It has always been our aim to release in the launch window of the new PSVR 2 headset, but it is also massively important to us that you, the players, receive the most polished, terrifying experience possible when you strap in for your first ride in Switchback VR.

“With this in mind, we have made the difficult decision to set a new launch date of March 16, 2023. Thank you for all your excitement and patience – it really means the world to us. We cannot wait to reveal more about our sinister rollercoaster for hell and watch this space for our new gameplay features video coming very soon.”

As you can see, alongside this news that Switchback VR has been delayed is the reveal that we should be learning more about the game soon in a new video dedicated to gameplay features.

While waiting for that video, check out the full PSVR2 launch window lineup here

    Forspoken reviews roundup: ‘remarkably generic’

    [ad_1]

The embargo on Forspoken reviews has lifted, meaning we’re now seeing the freakin’ dragons up close and also seeing ominous signs that we’re about to be talking way too damn much to a cuff. Square Enix’s newest RPG is out January 24, and the reviews from gaming sites have been pouring in.

Unfortunately, PC Gamer’s own review—by me!—will have to wait a little longer to join the ranks. No PC codes were offered for review, so everything you see here will be for the PlayStation 5 version of Forspoken. I’m praying for my rig that Forspoken’s system requirements aren’t as rough as they appear.

  • Dragon Age Dreadwolf production director departs BioWare after 19 years

Dragon Age Dreadwolf production director departs BioWare after 19 years

    [ad_1]

After working at BioWare for more than 19 years, Mac Walters, who served as lead writer on Mass Effect 2 and 3, is leaving the studio.

As reported by Eurogamer, Walters publicly shared the news of his departure over the weekend in a LinkedIn post. The BioWare veteran served as a writer on Jade Empire, later taking on the role of lead writer for the second and third Mass Effect games, and prior to leaving he was production director on the upcoming and highly anticipated Dragon Age Dreadwolf.

“With a new year comes new adventures,” Walters wrote in the post. “As some of you already know, at the end of last year I decided to leave BioWare. These past 19 years have been a life-changing experience to say the least, and it made the choice to go very difficult. I’ve worked with so many wonderful people and had the privilege to be a part of the most amazing teams and projects. It’s hard to fathom it all, and I know I’ll be reflecting on it for years to come.”

Looking at Walters profile, it currently says that he’s on a career break, in pursuit of an unspecified personal goal, so probably not anything video game related. Who can blame him after 19 years in the industry?

Walters also worked as creative director on the critically mixed Mass Effect Andromeda, and was also narrative director on the critically panned Anthem, so it’s safe to say his tenure at BioWare has seen some highs and lows.

What this means for Dragon Age Dreadwolf isn’t clear, though it likely won’t be too big of a deal, as developers constantly come and go at big studios. Dreadwolf did receive a new trailer back in December, which offers fans a look at a cinematic that will appear somewhere in the game.

Life Is Strange 2 is coming to Switch in just a couple of weeks.

The 2019 episodic adventure game will arrive in its entirety on February 2. The five-part saga sees brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz on the run from the law after the latter’s awakened supernatural power results in the loss of a loved one.
