A WRAL viewer submitted dramatic video of a car on fire by the side of Interstate 40 near Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon.

Fire crews responded to a car that caught fire along I-40 in Chapel Hill on June 28, 2024.

The car was on fire along the shoulder of the eastbound lanes near the US 15-501 interchange.

Flames and smoke were rising out of the vehicle as a passenger captured cell phone footage. A section of grass around the car had also burned.

The eastbound lanes of I-40 were shut down and traffic appeared to be backed up for miles as of 6 p.m.

Several fire trucks were there to help extinguish the fire.

It’s not known what caused the fire or if anyone was injured.

The car fire has been cleared, and all lanes are now open to traffic.
