CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 2-alarm fire damaged 24 apartment units in southwest Charlotte early Friday morning, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.
Investigators determined the cause of the fire was “a lit candle left unattended on the balcony of a third-floor unit.” The fire has been determined to be accidental.
The large fire broke out just before 2:30 a.m. Friday, July 5, at a three-story apartment complex located in the 7600 block of Holliswood Court, just off of South Tryon Street.
As firefighters arrived at the scene, heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the top of the building. It took 60 firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control.
Five residents and one firefighter were evaluated at the scene and released by EMS. Multiple pets were also rescued in the fire overnight.
In total, 24 units have been damaged, displacing 29 people. The American Red Cross is helping the impacted families.
Estimated damages to this fire are $1.4 million, Charlotte Fire said on Friday. This fire was one of three large fires that broke out overnight in the Charlotte area.
