Bo Nix pushing for more time with Denver Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) — Halfway through training camp, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is focused on what’s going on above the shoulder pads.
Rookie quarterback Bo Nix is starting to show that he has the brains, along with a crisp right arm, to eventually be the starting quarterback.
The question remains, when?
A week away from the preseason opener in Indianapolis against the Colts, Payton treated day eight of training camp to simulate a game.
Quarterback Jarrett Stidham started under-center with the first team on offense, but look out, rookie Bo Nix took the reins in the 2nd and 3rd team periods. Stidham would finish with the first team to end what was a crisp practice.
Since Payton rotated the quarterback snaps earlier this week, limiting Zach Wilson’s work, Nix has been the biggest beneficiary.
“(Nix) doesn’t take a lot of sacks,” Payton noted. “I think he knows when the play is over, time to go. Then I think he can make plays when he’s going. I used to say this all the time, ‘The sack numbers are a reflection more on the quarterback than the offensive line.’ [Former Saints QB Drew] Brees was one of those guys. He was a tough sack. The ball came out, and I think Bo has traits like that.”
In comparison, Russell Wilson was sacked 100 times in 30 games the last two seasons with the Broncos.
Payton wants the 2024 Broncos to be smart and physical. And going into the second season under the helm, the orange and blue are taking steps to mold themselves into that type of football team.
“Everything was about mental focus, from this morning when they got up to coming out here like it was a game,” said Payton.“ We’re still in that stage of camp where there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. It’s pitch black. That’s just the truth.”
Extra Points:
The historic Orange Crush defense is now represented in Canton, OH. Linebacker Randy Gradishar is now an official member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Introduced by fellow teammate Tom Jackson, Gradishar is the 16th Broncos player and/or owner represented in the Hall.
Cornerback Levi Wallace left practice with a hamstring injury.
The Broncos announced that the training camp practice on Friday, August 9 will be closed to the public.
