Biggest of them all: Big Boar winner Finnegan tips scales at 1,420 pounds, new Iowa State Fair record

It’s Finnegan’s world — we’re just living in it. The big pig from Monticello took the crown in Thursday’s Big Boar contest, one of the highlights on Day 1 of the Iowa State Fair, along with the Big Ram and Super Bull contests.Finnegan didn’t just best the day’s competition at the Swine Barn; he set a record as the biggest ever to enter the competition. He had winning boars in 2019 and 2021 and is known as the “Big Boar Guy” back home. “I’ve raised this guy since birth,” he said of Finnegan. “… I couldn’t believe it that he was that much heavier.”Britt’s got an eye for talent. “I picked him out at birth, thinking he had a big skeleton,” he said. “You’ve gotta feed them right to get them to this size. It doesn’t happen overnight.”So what’s the big guy eat? “He’s really finicky. … He likes his special feed. We make it sweet,” Britt said of the boar whose favorite treat is gummy bears.There are a couple of key ingredients to that feed but Britt said he’ll keep that a secret.The fair’s Big Ram was also crowned in the Sheep Barn on Thursday. Whip, a ram owned by Craig Fetters, of Lucas, weighed in at 498 pounds. The record ram weighed 507.5 pounds in 2014.Teddy Bear, a 3,064-pound Simmental bull owned by Gary Ruebel, of Des Moines’ Ruebel Farms, took home the crown for the Super Bull contest, Thursday evening. Though certainly hefty, Teddy Bear was over 300 pounds below the 3,404 record that’s stood since 2009. Teddy Bear will be on display at the Cattle Barn through the end of the fair.
