Last year, the community raised nearly $14 million on the Big Day of Giving. More than half of those gifts came form donations under $50.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — The Big Day of Giving is Thursday and one of the biggest fundraising events of the year for nonprofits nationwide.

Thousands of nonprofits in the Sacramento region rely on donations and volunteers. The Big Day of Giving is a chance to get involved and support a local cause you care about.

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation said 831 nonprofits are participating in the Big Day of Giving this year. Their causes include animals, music, education, children, seniors, veterans and even voting. The minimum gift is $10.

Last year, the community raised nearly $14 million on the Big Day of Giving. More than half of those gifts came form donations under $50.

“The most critical thing about dollars raised for Big Day of Giving is that they’re unrestricted,” said Kelly Siefkin, chief philanthropy officer for the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. “And that means that the organization can take those dollars raised on the Big Day of Giving and put them where they’re needed most. Some organizations will be so grateful for all the contributions that they’re receiving because this might be their largest fundraiser the entire year.”

The nonprofits officially involved with the Sacramento Region Community Foundation are screen, verified and must meet their critical criteria.

The organizations also participate in training to help them build up their communication plans and enhance their fundraising abilities.

Donations also have the opportunity to stretch further on the big day thanks to matches and boosts by other donors and companies, meaning your donation could be doubled or tripled on that day.
