Beloved Boston Marathon Dog Spencer Has Died At Age 13

[ad_1]

Spencer the Golden Retriever spent many years adorably supporting the runners of the Boston Marathon. For nine years, the dedicated dog held his “Boston Strong” flag in his mouth at the same exact spot. This smile-inducing sight went viral, and Spencer earned quite the social media following. He was even named the “official dog” of the 126th Boston Marathon.

Now, after experiencing multiple health complications, the darling dog has died.

Every year for nine years, Spencer could be seen standing in his usual spot alongside the marathon route near Ashland State Park. It didn’t matter what the weather was doing; even if it was raining, he was still out there with his encouraging sign.

“We at the B.A.A. are saddened to learn of the passing of one of our dearest and most loyal Boston Marathon supporters, Spencer. Spencer annually encouraged participants in Ashland, embodying the unwavering spirit of Boston’s athletes as he showed up year after year regardless of the weather conditions,” said the Boston Athletic Association.

It was back in 2018 that a photo of Spencer, who was holding two “Boston Strong” flags in his mouth during the rain-soaked race, went viral. He was even named the “official dog” of the 126th Boston Marathon at a ceremony at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.

“We were honored to have recognized Spencer as the Official Dog of the Boston Marathon in 2022, and extend our condolences to the Powers family, sister Penny, and his many friends and admirers around the world,” said the BAA.

Spencer has overcome multiple medical challenges over the past several years. First, Spencer survived having a three and a half pound tumor removed in 2020.

“We thought we would be lucky to have him for an extra month. Spencer was not ready to give up, and with the love and positive energy sent to him by hundreds of thousands of fans, he beat the odds,” said Richard Powers, Spencer’s dad.

But then, in September of 2022, doctors discovered a malignant tumor, and he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer.

Spencer had a lovely last day on earth, and then, with the help of their compassionate veterinarian, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

People from all over the world have been sending his family their condolences, and many marathon participants have shared that meeting Spencer was one of the highlights of their entire marathon experience.

Rest in peace sweet Spencer. The Boston Marathon will never be quite the same without you.
