NORTH NAPLES, Fla. — A black bear walked inside a North Naples family’s garage, opened their freezer and helped himself to a pint of coffee-flavored ice cream with boba pieces in it.
Konrad Umpenhour said he thought last night was going to be a normal night in his Carlton Lakes neighborhood, but it turned out to be everything but that. He forgot to close the garage door, and by the time he remembered and tried to put it down on his app… it was too late. Luckily the noise from the garage scared the bear away.
“It gave me an error telling me something was wrong and in the way and I was like, ‘what possibly could that be?’ and that’s when I came out and saw everything,” Konrad said.
The freezer door was wide open and bags of food were torn open all over the garage floor. Pizza, hamburger patties, bread, but most importantly — the ice cream that he was about to eat.
“The bear went in there, had his little meal then my son scared him away. It was vegan stuff, he took a thing of vegan ice cream!,” said Kurt Umpenhour, Konrad’s dad.
“It’s actually coffee-flavored iced cream with boba in it and it’s from Trader Joe’s, super good — apparently really good,” Konrad said.
Konrad and his parents looked at their security footage to see what happened and there it was, a bear walking across their neighbor’s driveway and into their garage.
“The hairs started standing up on the back of my neck. We were just violated by a bear,” Kurt said.
“If the timing was any different I would’ve been face to face with the bear, maybe had a new pet. Hey, if it likes my ice cream maybe I can tame it!” Konrad said.
The Florida Wildlife Commission said that black bears start to become more active in the fall, looking for food before hibernation. Bears need to consume 20,000 calories a day, so keep your food secure and tucked away.
If bears don’t find a food source in a neighborhood, they’ll move on.
