“I’ve always toyed with themes of transformation and reinvention,” shares screenwriter Diablo Cody, who gained prominence with the 2007 film “Juno,” earning accolades such as the Academy Award, BAFTA, and Critics’ Choice Award for Best Original Screenplay.
Cody, known for her work on films like “Young Adult” and “Jennifer’s Body,” explores dramatic change in her scripts, whether through supernatural possession or navigating new life stages. Her latest project, “Lisa Frankenstein,” offers a literal interpretation of this theme.
In this sardonic twist on Mary Shelley’s classic, Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), an awkward 17-year-old, grapples with a new school and life after her mother’s death and father’s hasty remarriage. Finding solace in a cemetery, Lisa accidentally reanimates a corpse (Cole Sprouse) and embarks on a quest to restore his humanity using freshly harvested body parts and her step-sister’s broken tanning bed.
Inspired by the 1985 film “Weird Science,” Cody places her take in the 1980s, using a tanning bed as the power source for reanimation. The film explores a female-centered perspective on the Frankenstein story.
Kathryn Newton, influenced by Gene Wilder’s performance in “Young Frankenstein,” plays the crucial role of Lisa. Cole Sprouse, embracing the challenge of portraying a creature beneath layers of prosthetic makeup, sees it as an opportunity to convey emotions through physical language.
Taffy, Lisa’s step-sister, played by Liza Soberano, is not the typical ‘mean popular girl.’ Cody adds complexity to the character, making her a beacon of positivity and a protective force for Lisa.
