SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The Asian Justice Movement, community leaders and a coalition of civil rights organizations are demanding the re-opening of the investigation of the death of Yanfang Wu as a homicide.

On July 3, 2023, Yanfang Wu, 63, passed away after she was pushed to the ground. The San Francisco Police Department concluded the death was an accident. According to the Asian Justice Movement, there is an unreleased video showing the suspect pushing Wu.

On March 4, another elderly Asian woman was attacked. A 71-year-old Chinese woman in Bayview was allegedly attacked from behind, grabbed by the hair, punched and thrown to the ground. According to the Asian Justice Movement, the alleged attacker is reportedly the same person of interest in Wu’s death.

The group is demanding a list of actions from the SFPD, including:

  • Re-open an investigation into the death of Wu as a homicide; and investigate whether both attacks were hate crimes.
  • Release the July 3, 2023 video immediately.
  • Identify the source of the leak that Wu’s death was an accident.
  • Investigate whether the attacker has a pattern of other violent incidents against Asian people.

KRON4 has reached out to San Francisco PD regarding reopening the case and has not yet heard back.
