Amtrak train involved in deadly crash in Durham, cause under investigation

Durham Police are investigating a deadly crash that took place Thursday night near the intersection of Pettigrew and Driver Street.
Shortly before 8:30 p.m., police say a vehicle was struck by a train.
The train and vehicle stopped several hundred yards from the intersection.
The vehicle caught fire after the crash and was resting against one of the rail cars.
The occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Passengers occupied the Amtrak train at the time of the crash but all were able to exit without injury.
One passenger was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
According to an Amtrak representative, they were making plans for alternate transportation. However, most passengers were arranging their own transportation from the scene.
The cause of the crash is under investigation at this time.
