AKRON, Ohio — Akron’s mayor and police chief have issued a statement ahead of the various planned community celebrations this weekend in honor of Juneteenth given recent events that have caused some concern for safety.
The statement from Mayor Shammas Malik and Chief Brian Harding states that they are excited about the holiday and that it presents the chance to “recommit ourselves to the work of equity right here in our own community.”
“In light of recent events in our city, which include the June 2nd shooting on Kelly Avenue, we understand there are some concerns about public safety surrounding large gatherings in Akron,” the statement reads.
There will be a police presence at the Akron Black Coalition’s 26th Annual Juneteenth Festival, the Ward 5 Fifth Annual Juneteenth Festival and the West Akron Parade.
“It is important to gather together as a community especially in the face of tragedy and join in celebration and unity,” the statement concludes. “We both plan to attend some of these events and hope to see many members of our community there.”
All city municipal offices will be closed for the holiday on June 19, but there will be no delay in trash or recycling.
