(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — Rep. Ben Bowman’s bill to limit corporate ownership of medical clinics is halfway through the short session of the Oregon Legislature.
The House advanced House Bill 4130 by a 42-12 vote on Thursday, Feb. 22, and sent it to the Senate. It must clear a Senate committee by Feb. 29.
The bill by the Democrat from Tigard would limit corporate ownership to less than a majority stake. Hospitals and health systems, long-term care and behavioral health are among those organizations exempt. Organizations would have seven years, until 2031, to come into compliance.
“I believe that licensed independent providers, not corporations or private equity firms, should be in charge of patient care,” Bowman said.
“We are in the midst of an unprecedented and accelerating surge in private investors taking over health care providers, driven largely by private equity firms and multimillion-dollar corporations. This shift is happening right under our feet today.”
