DENVER (KDVR) — The Aurora Police Department announced Wednesday that the sixth and final arrest warrant had been issued related to a viral apartment security video that captured moments in August just before a fatal shooting.
The incident occurred on Aug. 18 at an apartment complex, known as The Edge at Lowry, located in the 1200 block of Dallas Street. FOX31 obtained surveillance footage from a resident at the complex in late August and published the video in a story that received national attention.
The video shows six men walking up a stairwell carrying weapons, and one man can be seen talking on a cell phone. Aurora police have confirmed the video was taken shortly before a shootout in the complex’s parking lot that left one person dead.
The Aurora agency said that as of Wednesday afternoon, one suspect was in custody. The other five suspects are still wanted. The suspects are as follows:
- Naudi Lopez-Fernandez, 21 – In custody
- Anderson Zambrano-Pacheco, 25 – Wanted
- Niefred Jose Serpa-Acosta, 20 – Wanted
- Edilson Yoel Pena-Angulo, 25 – Wanted
- Danyeer Aramillo-Meneses, 23 – Wanted
- Adan Jose Ramirez-Sanchez, 37 – Wanted, named on Wednesday
The sixth arrest affidavit and suspect identity was announced a day after two other arrest warrants were publicized, identifying Pena-Angulo and Arimillo-Meneses. All six suspects are facing felony charges of first-degree burglary and menacing.
FOX31 reached out to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations in late September and was told by a spokesperson that Lopez-Fernandez and Zerpa-Acosta are both Venezuelan citizens.
The Aurora Police Department said in its Wednesday release that none of the six suspects have been connected to any criminal organization, including the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, which has a confirmed presence in Aurora. The investigation has been dubbed “Operation Safe Haven” by the Aurora police.
“However, that piece of the investigation is ongoing,” the police said in its Wednesday release. “Operation Safe Haven investigators are actively searching for the wanted suspects with the assistance of local, state and federal law enforcement partners.”
The Aurora Police Department Major Crime Homicide Unit is leading the active, ongoing investigation into the connected Aug. 18 fatal shooting. Anyone with any information can contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
Aurora leadership treads carefully discussing issues
“This investigation is and has been of great interest to the community and the media,” said Aurora police Chief Todd Chamberlain in the agency’s Sept. 25 release. “Although the investigation is ongoing, we want to share what we can with the community to ensure the steady release of factual information as part of our dedication to transparency, public safety and, most importantly, community service.”
Chamberlain told FOX31 in an exclusive interview that he does not believe the apartment buildings were “taken over” by the gangs.
“I’m going to be very blunt; I think that’s a false narrative. There was a lot of issues with the property management company on this. There was a lot of outreach at a city level, not at a police level but at a city level through the city manager’s office and the mayor’s office to try to get some systems in place where these people would actually become property managers,” Chamberlain said.
Dozens of residents have spoken up about the allegations of gang members in the apartment complexes, even holding a press conference on Sept. 4 to try and “set the record straight,” and alleging that the media attention on the violent activity has led to danger against migrant families.
