For seventeen years, my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Aslan, graced my life with joy, friendship, and a boundless spirit of adventure. With his distinctive ridge of hair, expressive eyes, and incredible agility, Aslan was more than just a pet; he was a family member whose footprints are etched forever in the sands of my heart. Coping with his loss was painful, but over time, I discovered ways to honor his memory that eased my heartache and enabled me to celebrate his life. If you, too, are grieving the loss of your Rhodesian Ridgeback, here are five ways you can keep their memory alive.

1. Commission a Pet Portrait

Transforming your favorite photo of your beloved pet into an artwork is a touching way to preserve their memory. It could be a painting, a sketch, or a digital artwork – the choice is yours. For me, a life-sized portrait of Aslan, now proudly adorns my living room wall. It’s a constant reminder of his majestic presence, a tribute to his spirit that brought life and warmth into our home.

2. Create a Memory Garden

Dedicating a special spot in your garden as a tribute to your Rhodesian Ridgeback can be healing. The act of gardening itself can soothe your grief, and over time, your garden can become a peaceful place for reflection and memories. Plant your dog’s favorite flowers, or choose perennials that bloom in their birthday month. You might also include a small statue of a Rhodesian Ridgeback or a personalized garden stone engraved with their name. My garden has sunflowers, Aslan’s favorites, and each time they bloom, I am reminded of his sunny disposition.

3. Write their Story

Writing about your Rhodesian Ridgeback can be therapeutic. You could create a memoir, a collection of short stories, or even a blog. Share their life journey, their quirks, and those unique moments that made them special. I have a leather-bound journal filled with Aslan’s tales. It’s my personal treasure trove that captures our shared experiences and his endearing antics. Writing about Aslan has kept our bond alive, and reading the entries brings both laughter and tears.

4. Donate to a Cause

In honor of your Rhodesian Ridgeback, consider making a donation or volunteering at an animal shelter or a breed-specific rescue organization. It’s a way to give back and honor your pet’s life by helping other animals in need. Aslan loved his squeaky toys, and every Christmas, in his memory, I donate toys to our local animal shelter. It’s my way of ensuring his love for play continues to spread joy.

5. Create a Keepsake Jewelry

This might not be for everyone, but for those who feel comforted by a physical reminder of their pet, keepsake jewelry can be a beautiful tribute. Some jewelers can incorporate your pet’s ashes into glass beads or pendants, allowing you to keep your pet close to your heart. I wear a pendant with a bit of Aslan’s fur encased within, a tangible connection that keeps him near, always.

The loss of a beloved pet is a profound experience, but remember, grief doesn’t mean forgetting. It is the beginning of a new kind of relationship, one of memory and spirit. As the saying goes, “What the heart has once known, it shall never forget.” So celebrate your Rhodesian Ridgeback’s life in the way that feels right for you. In keeping their memory alive, we pay tribute to their unconditional love, loyalty, and the irreplaceable role they played in our lives.
