(KRON) — A fire that broke out around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning has temporarily displaced 38 residents, according to the Oakland Fire Department. The two-alarm fire broke out in a three-story building at 9th and Madison streets.
The fire started in a dumpster at the rear of the property, according to an Oakland FD update.

OFD crews were able to prevent damage to 26 units within the building. However, four units suffered smoke and fire damage. Officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

There was no mention from officials of injuries as a result of the fire.
The Red Cross has opened a shelter in Oakland at 6:30 p.m. for the displaced residents, the nonprofit announced on X. The shelter will be at the Lake Merritt Sail Boat House on 568 Bellevue Ave.
