Are you getting bored by your plain walls, the empty windowsill, or even your old furniture? Maybe you feel a touch of colour could make a difference in your home. Or how about simply finding new ways to explore your creativity while also enjoying quality time with your family?
There are plenty of ways to improve different areas of your home while being social – and you might even save some money while you’re at it. Sprucing up your home decor can be a fun and cheap activity for the whole family.
Here are three ideas for creative family projects to get you started.
Make your own pillows and blankets
Even without a sewing machine, you can make covers for your throw cushions and homemade blankets. Granted, it might take a little longer if you do it by hand, but if you make it a fun family project, does that really matter?
Of course, you can go out and buy the perfect fabric which matches the colour of your sofa or the general style of your home. But how about making your creations a little more meaningful?
For example, your children’s old t-shirts can be turned into a quilt. Or, for smaller sizes such as baby clothes, you can make a cushion cover. This way, you can always remember those favourite outfits, while also reducing the need for storage space.
Picking and choosing the right clothes or fabric and figuring out how to place the different cuts to make the finished project can be time-consuming. But it’s also a fun way to spend a couple of hours together as a family after dinner or before bed, sewing and talking about your day. And once your creation is complete, you can enjoy it as a family or give another family member a truly special gift.
Bring the outdoors inside
Any addition of green can help add a little breath of fresh air to any room. And what better way to add some green than to incorporate plants as part of your decor?
You could make vases and pots for flowers and plants, or simply buy a pot and personalise it with paints. This activity is suitable for almost all ages, as long as you make sure that you supervise small children.
Another fun way to add some greenery to your home is to try a plant and herb growing kit. This is a great way to introduce your children to home-grown plants and get them interested in gardening. Herbs are a good place to start as they are generally easy and quick to grow. If the kids want to go further, you could introduce more edible plants such as cucumbers, strawberries, or tomatoes.
Give new life to your old furniture
Any piece of furniture can be affected by usage and time. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it should be replaced. With a little creativity, you can make your old and used furniture as good as new – or at least uniquely beautiful and fitting for your home.
A wooden chair, for example, can be given a new lease of life with paint. And while you can choose to go with a plain colour, why not take the opportunity to create a fun memory? You could include the whole family in the process of picking out colours, painting the chair, and maybe even adding personal touches here and there. This way, your furniture will provide a lasting memory while adding a personal touch to your home.
If your family is a little more skilled in DIY, you can even try your hand at things like reupholstering or adding a mosaic top to a table. All you need is the correct supplies and tools, and you’re good to go!
