I’ll be honest I’m a bit of a hermit. I only like interacting with the public on a need to happen bases. I used to go to a gym regularly and every time I would get bored and tired of going and I would lose interest quickly. I didn’t want to get a trainer and I like to fit a workout whenever I can, that’s why I opt for home workouts. I can do it when I’m ready and I don’t have to get dressed for it. Though it took me a while to find yoga, I eventually did and I love it. I have found great results doing yoga practices for weight loss at home and my body thanks me for it. I do a few different stretches and sequences in my practices with a large amount of ab work. There are a lot of people discovering yoga as a great addition to their current workout routine or they want it to become their main workout. It’s something that can be challenging, rewarding, and can be done at any level. Please continue to read if you’d love to learn more about yoga and what practices would be best for your needs.

What is a Yoga Practice?

Yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’, meaning ‘to join’, ‘to yoke’, or ‘to unite’. As Yogic scriptures, the practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness. With that of the universal consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body. Yoga is not just a great way to get your body moving. It’s more about connecting with your body and learning yourself, you can do yoga practices for weight loss at home but it’s more about connecting with yourself. Don’t lose sight of that in your practice.

Benefits Of Doing Yoga at Home

There are so many benefits to doing yoga whether you’re at home or you go to a class. If you’re considering doing yoga practices for weight loss at home or just because you want to challenge yourself here are a few benefits to keep you motivated and engaged.

Flexibility

The biggest one is increased flexibility I covered the benefits of stretching and flexibility in a previous post (read it here) but it helps improve your mobility and you get fewer injuries. Also, you will notice an improvement in your overall posture, balance, and state of mind.

Beginner Friendly

There are so many styles of yoga you’re able to jump in where ever you can in a lot of different styles. It doesn’t matter how active you are. When I first started I didn’t work out at all, I would come home and sit on the couch the most I would do is walk my dog, sad I know. I started slow with yoga and did just the basic vinyasa flow. Kept it slow, easy, and short that way I got used to it, and my body got used to moving. As I continued I increased my speed, extended my time and the poses changed and got more challenging. I would advise downloading an app or doing youtube videos, that’s what I did then you can go on and experiment with classes if you like. I honestly do yoga at home for weight loss, I like the privacy and I can do it whenever I want.

Mental Benefits

As previously stated yoga is just as much a mental workout as it is a physical one. Connecting your body with the flow of your breathing has a calming effect on your overall peace of mind. Practicing breathing exercises helps you think more clearly and reduce feelings of anxiety. No matter how stressed I am after a session I instantly feel calmer and no matter how bad my day is I automatically feel more peaceful and centered. It’s almost like a meditation practice so it helps your mind and body.

Toning And Strenght Building

I know when you think of yoga you think of a small petite person with a thin frame, but people who practice yoga have quite a bit of muscle building. Yoga builds muscles by consistently contracting your muscles by holding poses or using your own body weight against something unmovable like a wall or floor. You have to lift and hold yourself up and breathe through each pose and while it sounds easy it’s not as simple as it sounds.

Yoga For Weight Loss

Vinyasa Yoga

This is the most popular style of yoga to lose weight for beginners. According to One Flow Yoga Vinyasa is a style of yoga characterized by stringing postures together and moving from one to the other seamlessly connecting movements to your breathing. Vinyasa is different with every session so you’re constantly being challenged! Your body gets a full body workout and your mind is challenged making them work in perfect harmony.

Power Yoga

Power yoga is more of a westernized style of yoga since it’s more focused on the fitness aspect and is not always focused on creating the mind and body. Power yoga is a Vinyasa style yoga but incorporates the athleticism of Ashtanga. This doesn’t have the traditional merits of yoga and it gives the teacher the flexibility to teach poses in any order. While it does have the elements of yoga it’s more focused on strength and working out so say you want to use yoga to lose belly fat this is a good option.

Ashtanga Yoga

If you’d like more traditional yoga practices for weight loss at home but still want a nice work out then Ashtanga yoga would be for you. Yoga Basics considers ashtanga a very dynamic and athletic form of hatha yoga, made up of 6 series or levels with a fixed order of posters. It has roots in vinyasa flowing through the poses with a focus on energy and breath. There are reps involved and the gradually intensifies as it goes on. This is one of the great yoga practices for weight loss at home because you can repeat the poses multiple times till you get it down and still get the workout you want.

Which yoga is best for weight loss?

So we know the best yoga practices for weight loss at home, which one should you do? It really depends on your flow and what you’re looking for. You also get paired with a trainer who can help motivate you to keep on track and they create great workout plans that will help get you to your fitness goals. However as long as you’re eating well and moving more you’re going to lose weight, it’s a numbers game, not magic.

When doing yoga practices for weight loss at home, you’ll want to ensure that you’re making this a practice. There’s no such thing as ‘ yoga to lose weight in 7 days ‘or even yoga to lose weight in 10 days!’ This is something, like most things, it’ll take time but, there’s good news.
