A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection to a shooting that left one man dead and another hospitalized on Monday at an apartment complex in southeast Raleigh, alarming nearby residents.
Marquette Lamont Sykes, was taken into custody and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon.
At approximately 1:36 a.m., officers with the Raleigh Police Department responded the Walnut Ridge Apartments in the 3400 block of White Sock Lane.
A man with serious injuries was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Another man was also injured in the shooting and taken to the hospital in a private vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries.
The scene was still active at 12:30 p.m., more than 10 hours later. Much of the investigation was centered around a white SUV, and at 12 p.m. forensics teams were going in and out of the vehicle.
Neighbors said they heard between 10 and 15 gunshots overnight.
Josh Medlin, who lives in Walnut Ridge, said it was terrifying for his family and they plan to move as soon as possible.
“[I was] just scared,” he said. “Just told the kids to get down. It’s pretty terrifying … I have a lot of kids and it isn’t the first time.”
Medlin said there have been three shootings in the area in the last 90 days.
“We need to move,” he said. “I was talking to a lady earlier, and we were just saying, it’s time to go.”
Broadcastify radio traffic revealed information about the possible suspect(s):
“5-15 heading to the shooting. You’ve got two possible suspect vehicles. A white Cadillac and a dark vehicle. I’m not sure where they’re at. You have one patient not breathing.”
Medlin said police officers patrolling the neighborhood on foot would help him feel safer.
This area of southeast Raleigh has not been immune to violence in recent years. Over the last 12 months, the block has seen several kinds of criminal activity, including drugs, assaults and a shots fired call.
So far this year, WRAL News has reported three other shootings and a stabbing all happening less than five miles from Monday’s shooting on White Sock Lane.
In August, a man was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting less than a quarter mile away from Monday’s shooting.
Three assaults have also been reported in this same block of White Sock Lane this year.
Another shooting took place around the same time Monday morning about 4 miles away in a neighborhood on Bertie Drive.
