The Portal is an art installation created by Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys that connects New York City to Dublin, Ireland, with a live streaming 24/7 video broadcast. Located in the Flatiron District of Manhattan, you can walk up to the US-based Portal and interact with the people viewing the Ireland portal on Dublin’s O’Connell Street. Now, if only New Yorkers could use the Portal to send street hot dogs to Dubliners, and Dubliners would return the favor with cold Guinness.
The sculptural portals operate via integrated cameras and high-speed internet access, allowing the live streams to play smoothly. Am I going to visit the New York portal and wave to the people in Dublin? Maybe. Or get a running start and see if I can make that Portal work the way it is supposed to!
This is Benediktas’s second set of portals, with the first set he created in 2021 connecting Vilnius, Lithuania, and Lublin, Poland. Now he’s connecting cities an entire ocean apart! Next stop: a portal on the moon! I’m kidding, I’m not sure if that’s the next step, but I think we can all agree it certainly should be.
