NEWTON, N.C. (WJZY) — A two-year-old has died after being hit by a car in Catawba County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol responded to Buffalo Shoals Road at Abernathy Willams Road around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

This incident happened in the 3800 block of Buffalo Shoals Road, about five miles east of Maiden and near the Olivers Crossroads community.

A 2001 Saturn passenger car was going south on Buffalo Shoals Road and hit the two-year-old who was in the roadway, officials said.

The toddler was airlifted to Charlotte where he later died of his injuries. The driver of the Saturn, a 54-year-old woman, was not injured.

The road was closed for about one hour during the on-scene investigation. Officials said no charges will be filed in this case against the driver.

Both the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and the NCSHP are investigating the incident.
