August 29th, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall as a large and powerful category four hurricane in southeast Louisiana.

Prior to landfall meteorologists at the National Weather Service issued a doomsday statement which read in part, “most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks… perhaps longer.”

They went on to write, “water shortages will make human suffering incredible by modern standards.”

Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes to strike the United States.

In all, Katrina was responsible for 1,833 fatalities and caused 108 billion dollars in damage.
