  • Got a Pixel 10? Google’s Android Phone Can Now Share Files With Apple’s AirDrop

    The caveat is that the iPhone user will need to switch AirDrop into the “Everyone for 10 Minutes” mode instead of “Contacts Only” mode. Google says this isn’t some kind of workaround solution. It’s a direct, peer-to-peer connection; your data isn’t routed through a server, shared content isn’t logged, and no extra data is shared. Naturally, iPhone owners will be able to send data back to Pixel 10 phones as well.

    Google has not worked with Apple on this cross-compatibility, as the company says it “welcomes the opportunity” to work with Apple so that this sharing function can work in the Contacts Only mode. “We accomplished this through our own implementation,” a Google spokesperson tells WIRED. “Our goal is to provide an easy and secure file-sharing experience for our users, regardless of who they are communicating with.”

    In a security blog post, Google says the underlying strategy for what makes this new synergy between Quick Share and AirDrop work is the memory-safe Rust programming language. “These overlapping protections on both platforms work in concert with the secure connection to provide comprehensive safety for your data when you share or receive,” writes Dave Kleidermacher, vice president of Google’s platforms security and privacy.

    Google tapped NetSPI, a third-party and independent penetration testing firm, to validate the security of the new sharing feature. The findings? The interoperability is “notably stronger” than other industry implementations. That’s pretty important, considering what happened the last time someone tried to improve cross-compatibility between iOS and Android without Apple: the startup Beeper tried to make texts from Android phones show up as blue bubbles on iPhones and caused all kinds of drama.

    The number of people who can actually use this feature is limited because it’s only available on Google’s latest Pixel 10 smartphones, which just launched this past August. However, Google says it’s looking to expand the feature to more Android devices in the future.

    This new feature in Quick Share is rolling out starting today to the Pixel 10 series, which includes the Google Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. As it’s rolling out, you may not see it immediately on your device. To use it, all you need to do is select something to share, whether it’s a file, contact, or photo, choose Quick Share in the sharing menu, and make sure the iPhone owner has their AirDrop set to “Everyone for 10 Minutes Only.” The iPhone will be able to see the Pixel 10 device and can receive or send data.

  • Here’s how little Anaheim’s share of Angels ticket revenue was worth this year

    The city of Anaheim faces an annual deficit projected at $64 million, so every little bit helps. And, because of the Angels’ poor play, that is exactly what the city got in ticket revenue from its hometown baseball team this year: just a little bit.

    Until Sunday, in fact, the city did not know for certain that it would get even a penny in ticket revenue.

    As part of their lease to play in the city-owned stadium, the Angels are required to pay the city $2 for every ticket sold beyond 2.6 million. On Sunday, the final day of the regular season, the last-place Angels topped that threshold by 15,506. The payment to Anaheim: $31,012.

    In better times — amid a run of six postseason appearances in eight years — the city received more than $1 million annually in ticket revenue. The high point: $1,613,580 in 2006, when the team sold a record 3,406,790 tickets.

    Although major league teams do not disclose their financial data, Forbes estimated the Angels generated $120 million in ticket revenue last year. The Angels sold 2.58 million tickets last year, so the city received none of that revenue.

    When the city and the Walt Disney Co. — then the owner of the Angels — agreed on that stadium lease in 1996, the 2.6 million figure was largely aspirational. The Angels sold 1.8 million tickets that year. In the previous 30 seasons playing in the stadium, the Angels’ attendance had topped 2.6 million only four times.

    In 2003, however, Arte Moreno bought the Angels from Disney, inheriting a Cinderella World Series championship team and fortifying it with premier free agents, including Hall of Famer outfielder Vladimir Guerrero and star pitcher Bartolo Colon.

    The city first received ticket revenue that year, when the Angels’ attendance shot past 2.6 million and topped 3 million. Under Moreno’s ownership, the Angels won five division championships in the next six years and sold more than 3 million tickets every year from 2003-2019.

    The Angels have not made a postseason appearance in 11 years — the longest drought in the major leagues — and have not posted a winning record in 10 years. Attendance dropped sharply after the pandemic, and Anaheim has received a share of the Angels’ ticket revenue only twice in the past six years: this year, and $81,150 in 2023.

    The city does receive revenue from parking and other stadium events, but only after certain thresholds have been reached. Under the lease, ticket sales are the primary driver of city revenue.

    The Angels pay no rent under their lease, since Disney paid all but $20 million of a $117-million stadium renovation. The city said it would make its money back from development of the parking lots around the stadium, which has not happened in the three decades since the lease took effect.

    Moreno twice has agreed to deals in which he would own the stadium and develop the land around it, but the city backed away both times: in 2014, after then-mayor Tom Tait objected to leasing the land to Moreno for $1 per year; and in 2022, after the FBI taped then-mayor Harry Sidhu saying he would ram a deal through and ask the Angels for a million-dollar contribution in return. (Sidhu was sentenced to prison last March, after signing a plea agreement that specified he had leaked confidential negotiating information to the Angels. The government has not alleged the Angels did anything wrong.)

    In April, current mayor Ashleigh Aitken invited Moreno for a new round of discussions. He made no commitment, and the city subsequently decided to put any talks on hold until the completion of a property assessment designed to determine how many hundreds of millions of dollars would be needed to keep the 1966 stadium viable for decades to come. That study is expected to be concluded next year.

    In January, the Angels exercised an option to extend their stadium lease through 2032. They have two other options to extend the lease if they wish: one through 2035, the other through 2038.

    For the eighth year in a row, Austin Pets Alive! has been selected as a recipient of funds raised during Austin Subaru’s Share the Love campaign. The annual fundraiser, which ran from November 2022 to January 2023, pledges to donate $250 when a new vehicle is purchased or leased. The 2022 Share the Love campaign has been the most successful to date for our organization, bringing in a tail-wagging $125,000! This awe-inspiring donation can contribute to our organization in many ways! With a contribution like this we we are can do any of the following:

    • treat 416 parvo puppies.

    • vaccinate 2,500 litters of puppies.

    • perform 62 life-saving surgeries.

    • purchase a vehicle for our transport team and support its maintenance.

    Our friends at Austin Subaru support APA! throughout the year and we’re honored to see the hard work and passion they gave to finish the most recent Share the Love campaign on such a high note! The success of the campaign is due to a fundraising concept that easily engages the public and is partnered with the passion that each employee puts behind their effort to share the fundraiser with their customers. And as if raising over $100k doesn’t showcase this company’s passion enough, this generous company makes sure to mark the check celebration by coming on site to put in some sweat equity by participating in a volunteer project!

    In celebration of this donation, the dealership team rolled up their sleeves and “dug” in to help us beautify a piece of our shelter! The team got to work laying out the frame for a memorial garden, shoveling fresh dirt into wheelbarrows, then smoothing it into the garden area. With 12 people contributing a couple of hours, we were able to make huge progress and are now ready for the next phase in this project!

    Thank you Austin Subaru for your continuous support year after year — support that has helped save the lives of hundreds of animals! This generous support furthers APA!’s mission to provide innovative life-saving medical care and support so that more pets can be saved each year.

    In a nod to America’s great affection for furry friends, the United States Postal Service unveiled two new ‘Love Forever’ stamps.  The stamp dedication took place at the Austin Pets Alive! Texas animal shelter, with adoptable pets available for the event, allowing participants and attendees to see the animals receive and benefit from the love of the community. 

    The stamps display illustrations of a puppy and a kitten with their paws lightly resting on a red heart, perfectly timed for Valentine’s Day.  USPS said each forever stamp is intended to evoke feelings of warmth and playfulness. They can add sentiment and whimsy to letters, birthday or graduation cards, baby shower invitations or thank you notes.

    “The kitten and puppy rest their front paws on a large red
    heart, which perfectly captures the love we have for these special
    creatures, and their love for us in return,” said Judy de Torok, vice
    president of Corporate Relations for the Postal Service. , who served
    as the ceremony’s opening official and is a pet lover. “I have a
    feeling these may be some of our most popular labels.”

    Also participating in the event were Dr. Ellen Jefferson, president and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!; Kelly Holt, Senior Manager of Austin Pets Alive! cat program; Richard Scott, volunteer dog behavior specialist with the rescue and Matt Beisner, star of “Dog: Impossible” on Disney+.

    APA! officials hope the stamps will encourage people to support their local animal shelters.

    Locally, Austin Subaru selects organizations to support right here at home, and APA! is honored to be one of those partners since 2015! This generous company has firmly established a commitment to community involvement, and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of it.

    2021 marked the seventh year that the employees of Austin Subaru have worked hard to assist our mission through this fundraiser, raising $80,000 and over $400,000 since the lifetime of the Share the Love event! This fundraiser launches each November and concludes in early January with the pledge to donate $250 with every new vehicle purchase or lease.

    Not only does the Austin Subaru team recognize the importance of supporting local nonprofits with monetary gifts, they also recognize that the gift of time makes a big difference, too! To celebrate the accomplishment of their 2021 Share the Love fundraiser, we worked with the team to get them on-site, roll up their sleeves, and give of their valuable time! Thanks to this crew, our shelter received some TLC, including tackling a number of painting projects, helping to stuff our adopter bags with some fun goodies, and aiding our facilities team with building an awning that will help shade our clinic team and APA! fosters when conducting their carside appointments. This volunteer day is incredibly generous and just goes to show how deep the Austin Subaru support runs for our organization.

    Austin Subaru’s contributions throughout these years have been incredibly impactful, allowing our teams the ability to give essential care to the pets that come through our doors.     Best of all, it’s easy to do. Creating your fundraising page takes just minutes. Sharing your page with your community and encouraging folks to donate is quick and effective (more on that later!). As you raise funds and engage with your community, you’ll also get insider tips and incentives to keep your momentum going!

    Creating a Fundraising Page on Classy

    1. Visit APA!’s Classy page and click “Become a Fundraiser”

    Which type of fundraising page should I create? Can I create both a Classy page and Facebook fundraiser?

    You can absolutely create both types of fundraisers! In fact, it’s a great way to customize your outreach to friends and family via email with a link to your Classy page and connect more broadly with your network via Facebook.

    If you only want to create one page, think about who you want to ask to engage with APA!’s mission and what sort of support you may want or need for your fundraiser. Classy is great for more personalized outreach and you’ll receive encouragement from our team along with tips and tricks for making your page a success! Facebook is easy to send to lots of people but unfortunately, we can’t offer the same sort of support.

    How can I make sure my fundraiser is a success?

    The most important thing you can do to make sure your fundraiser is successful is to share why you care about Austin Pets Alive! and the vulnerable animals that we serve. The second most important thing you can do is share your page often with a broad audience. If you do these things, you’ll likely see success! Here are a few more tips:

    • Email your fundraiser to your close friends and family first – these are the folks who are most likely to support your efforts!

    • Specifically, ask for a donation, and consider making one yourself

    The holiday season is a time filled with love and joy, friends and family, busy calendars full of festive get-togethers, and cozy evenings at home wrapped in blankets. And at Austin Pets Alive! this is the busiest time of the year for our fundraising which is why we’re so grateful for Subaru’s Share The Love event!

    This holiday season marks Subaru’s 14th Share the Love event and since 2015 Austin Subaru has selected APA! as their hometown charity, raising more than $300,000 over the years to support our lifesaving mission!

    Share the Love takes place from November 18 – January 3rd. Hometown charities receive $250 for any new or leased vehicle sold during this time! And Austin Subaru adds some additional donations as well, such as donating $5 for every vehicle serviced during the Share the Love period!

    This fundraiser goes a long way for our organization. To name just a few things that we can accomplish with Austin Subaru’s Share the Love support:

    • $1,000 — Purchases a new IV pump to keep puppies hydrated and alive as they fight Parvovirus.

    • $500 — Supports maintenance and repair of current IV pumps.

For the second year in a row, they have raised $100,000 during their Share the Love campaign! Genny Hill, owner at Continental Automotive Group says, “our commitment to APA! allows us to share the love that our team and our guests have for their pets. We are excited to continue this partnership and happy to contribute to an organization that acts on the affection and appreciation we have for our furry friends.” For Austin Pets Alive!, every penny counts.     ​Japanese real estate developer Global Agents opened FILMS WAKO, a new shared apartment that features a fully functional movie theater in Wako, Saitama Prefecture, on October 20. The company has been rapidly expanding across Japan to respond to the growing demand for their new lifestyle accommodations, and FILMS WAKO is the first co-living apartment in Japan to feature an authentic home-experience on par in scale and design with an actual movie theater.

    Global Agents endeavored to create a unique property that could connect all 123 residents through a central theme. Interaction is a core ideal that serves as the foundation for each of the company’s properties, but they ultimately decided on cinema for FILMS WAKO because of its near-universal appeal and ability to connect people on an emotional and artistic level. The result is perhaps their most focused and grand offering yet.

    This was certainly our most ambitious and challenging project yet. We wanted to push the market forward and offer a truly new and unique experience to our tenants.

    They have made the dream of having an actual cinema at home a conceptual reality. The centerpiece of the property is a 40-square-meter theater space with 16 industry standard movie seats, the same ones found in new high-end movie theaters. Also, sporting an enormous 150-inch screen coupled with an industrial grade 4K EPSON projector and a 7.1 channel JBL surround sound system, the experience has never been more real. Residents also have access to 4K Apple TV, a PS4 Pro and are able to connect their own electronic devices to watch any film they like or use the space for gaming as well. In the digital age where people enjoy films and videos in the comfort of their own home, they created a new way to watch films in privacy while maintaining a real cinema experience.

    In addition, the main lounge space is a staggering 120 square meters and showcases a kitchen counter modeled after a cinema ticket booth while the walls feature artworks with quotes from famous movies. Residents can also socialize around the billiard table or one of the many video game consoles available. Other shared facilities include a spacious Working Lounge with free Wi-Fi for studying or working at home, and a Fitness Studio, ideal for yoga enthusiasts, dancers, or just anyone trying to fit a workout into their busy schedule. Another new and unique feature available in the property is the Photo Studio. With studio lights and a white backdrop free to use, this is the perfect place for the many artists and creators living at Social Apartment to unleash their creativity.

    FILMS WAKO is Global Agents’ second and biggest property in Wako with 123 available rooms. Wako itself is an up-and-coming area in Tokyo-adjacent Saitama Prefecture that offers convenient and direct access to the popular inner suburbs of Tokyo.     Global Agents has just announced the Grand Opening of their first Social Apartment in Osaka, ‘TERMINALS‘ scheduled for October 2018. The company has been rapidly expanding across Japan to respond to the growing demand for new lifestyle accommodations and will finally be bringing its flagship brand, Social Apartment, to Osaka’s dynamic Takatsuki neighbourhood. ‘TERMINALS‘ is Global Agents’ second property in the Kansai region, having opened OTOWA Kobe Motomachi in 2015. Global Agents collaborated with the West Japan Railway Company to turn ‘TERMINALS‘ into a new standard for shared living spaces in Japan. The property was designed around the theme of “intersection” and will serve as a metaphorical terminal between different stations in the residents’ lives. The stylish lounge and wide variety of on-site amenities are all provided for residents to experience more fulfilling social interactions.

    PLAY/WORK. ON/OFF. PRIVATE/SHARED. LOCAL/GLOBAL. TERMINALS plays with contradictions and oppositions to maintain the perfect environment for social interaction. The main lounge, designed with free-flowing lines that all lead to one central point, acts as a space where residents, who may have different kinds of lifestyles, can engage and “intersect” with one another. Every common space in ‘TERMINALS‘ has been conceived to enrich residents’ life with interactions and “intersections.”

    The lounge combines chic modern elements with designs that express Osaka’s unique energy to provide a lively yet comfortable space. It is easy to imagine residents cooking at one of the many island kitchen stations, playing pool, or eating at one of the adjacent booths or tall countertop tables located towards the back of the spacious 150m² lounge while chatting with other residents who have just returned home from work.

    In addition to the main lounge, residents will have a 40m² working lounge with free Wi-Fi and power where they can hunker down and concentrate on work. There will also be a Theater Room with an enormous 120″ screen where they can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and just enjoy a movie.

    TERMINALS‘ has 55 private rooms each around 14m² in size. Residents will be able to decide how social they want to be at any given time because they can access their private room without passing through common areas.

    The property is located a convenient 5-minute walk from the Takatsuki station on the JR Tokaido Line and a 15-minute walk from the Takatsuki-shi station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line. It takes only 15 minutes to get to Osaka and 13 minutes to Kyoto from JR Takatsuki station. The area around Takatsuki station is vibrant and features a shopping street full of restaurants that are open around the clock.
