She added a gold necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels, and a Cartier bracelet.

    Harper regularly appears on Victoria’s socials, showing fans how to apply makeup from her mother’s Victoria Beckham Beauty range.

    Earlier this year, the 50-year-old former Spice Girl remarked that Harper was ‘obsessed with beauty and her favourite shop was Space NK. Telling Allure, she said:  “Harper is obsessed with makeup, obsessed with beauty. We were driving past her favourite makeup store, Space NK, the other day, and David said, ‘Oh, my goodness, your favourite store closed.’ It was so funny. She was like, ‘No, it’s fine, Daddy. Nobody panic. They’re just expanding.’”

    Victoria also told Hello Fashion that Harper actually inspires the shade names in her beauty collection. She revealed: “Harper was the inspiration behind our Cheeky Posh Cream Blush Stick in Rollerskate. I was with my product development team in Miami and she was roller skating. She went to her room and pulled out this bright pink shade. It looked scary, but it planted the idea of creating a vivid pink that gives you a fresh glow instantly. It’s such a fun and youthful shade.”

    Don’t get me wrong—makeup-related compliments from anyone at any time are wonderful, but there’s something about receiving a compliment from, um, an actual makeup artist that just kind of transcends all others. Makeup artistry is their profession, after all.

    Now, I don’t score this particular kind of coveted remark often, but I have noticed an interesting pattern. Any time a makeup artist has openly admired my makeup, it’s always been on my shimmery shadow MO. And since I pretty much abhor powder and cream formulas, their compliment always befalls whichever liquid eye shadow I happen to be wearing on that blessed day. (Spoiler: I have lots of liquid eye shadows I collect and adore equally.)

    As someone who is rather inept when it comes to eye makeup (for years, I strictly wore mascara and maybe a quick flick of liquid liner), my obsession with liquid eye shadow makes sense. While it may sound counterintuitive (liquid equals mess, right?), these types of formulas usually involve way less mess and fallout, they’re easier for me to blend, they’re faster to apply, and they don’t move once they dry. For someone who adores the look of ethereally glimmering eyelids (Hi! Me!), there couldn’t be a better medium. Therefore, I pretty much exclusively wear liquid eye shadows in lieu of the powder options most makeup artists seem to prefer. 

    Because all of the best liquid eye shadows have scored me loads of compliments over the years and because summer is approaching and ’tis the season for a fuss-free liquid formula to shine, I’m sharing nine of my all-time-favorite liquid eye shadows below.     The arrival of January gives us the perfect opportunity to hop on the last of winter’s beauty trends, and I’ll be taking cues from Palvin to kick off the New Year in style. “I always love to go with a stronger lip—not necessarily a classic red lip, but maybe something deeper and darker,” she says. To create this bold look, she layers Armani’s Lip Power Matte in shades 603 and 207. The stunning lip combo is also her go-to during the holiday season.

    We caught up with beauty expert, makeup artist, and and entrepreneur Jenny Patinkin to get the scoop on the best makeup practices for individuals with gamine facial features. “Gamine facial features tend to be delicate, so overdoing contouring can give an almost sunken or hollow look,” says Patinkin. “If I do any contouring at all, it’s only a subtle wash done at the part of the cheekbone closest to the ears and not extended onto the face more than one to two inches and perhaps a little on the jawline to call attention to the V shape of the jawline.”

    Instead, Patinkin prefers to focus on bringing a soft glow to the cheeks and a slightly contoured smoky eye to create a round, doe-eyed look with a sultry flair. “It’s important to use makeup brushes sized for more delicate features instead of very large ones that can over-apply products like bronzer or contour,” she tells us.     “I know the temptation is to do a heavier brow with this look à la Audrey Hepburn, the ultimate gamine, but I would advise caution when it comes to squaring off the inner corner of the brow or using a very opaque color to fill in,” Patinkin explains. Both can look overly harsh in contrast to one’s more delicate features rather than complementing them as needed.

    Cut creases and winged eyeliner are staples for a number of Priscilla Presley’s most recognizable eye makeup looks. Do you have any tips and tricks on how to re-create them?

    While I generally associate cut creases with the 1960s, it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Priscilla’s makeup based on the photos I’ve seen of her. What really stands out to me about her 1960s look is the bold way she wore her eyeliner. She did double wings, inverted wings on her inner corners, and straight up outlined her whole eye in black eyeliner. She wore a generous amount of black eye shadow and liner at Elvis’s request, which actually made for a pretty intense eye look rather than the typical wide-eyed babydoll 1960s look with the big cut crease.

    To do a cut crease is to create a new crease line for your eyelid. All you need is black or brown eyeliner in whichever format you are the most comfortable working with pencil, cream, liquid, or my favorite, a felt tip pen like Half Magic’s award-winning Magic Flik Calligraphy Eyeliner Pen, which is included in our Limited Edition Priscilla Makeup Set. You’re going to draw a curved line above your natural crease line.

    The degree of curvature that you choose is based on personal preference. The outer tail of Priscilla’s cut crease line extends toward the tail of her eyebrow, which gives a lifted, seductive, and feline effect. Now look at Twiggy. The outer tail of her cut crease line extends toward the outer corner of her eye, which gives her more of a wide-eyed baby doll, demure look. So, it’s all about the vibe you want to channel and what you want your makeup to say!

    I don’t see any mistakes. I live for modern takes on 1960s glam and I slurp it up every time I see it.

    How does your background in editorial makeup influence your approach to your film and television artistry? 

    Bringing my knowledge of being an editorial makeup artist into the world of film and TV has helped a lot but I’ve also had to shift my vision and techniques. Because cameras are so good these days, I’m able to utilize my editorial eye and training in fashion and beauty to translate what’s needed. I love when, on the camera, skin can look like skin and keep its texture. I always leave some areas of realness which works for today’s storytelling style.

    Letting people look like people is the closest thing I can get to defining my aesthetic.By having the beauty and editorial side of my background, I also worked in advertising where they often shoot using macro lenses. You can’t fake anything! You have to be really precise because everything is so obvious. Preciseness is my strength, because I have a way of making sure makeup translates well on screen.

    Cameras truly capture everything, don’t they?

    They do! My goal is for the makeup to look good from every angle. I also don’t want to limit the camera’s or actors ability to perform. The way I provide my makeup artistry to the industry is by creating looks that are consistent when appearing in close ups and wide shots. One thing I also try to do is avoid disrupting the actors with many touchups. So, I think ahead when I’m prepping the actors for makeup. I start with skincare and then send the actors to sit in hair so that while they’re hair is being done, the skin is able to absorb the serum and moisturizer that I applied. When they come back to me 20-30 minutes later, I have a very good base to start with.

    The skincare process is really important to me. When you watch the show, you’ll see that at the beginning Brie’s character, Elizabeth, wears very little makeup and shows her skin. For that, I wanted to minimize the amount of makeup I used on her; instead accentuating her sun-kissed skin and freckles. Later, when Brie’s character goes on to wear more makeup as a TV show host, I barely had to touch up her look because the base I started could last. Because of that, even when I used a heavier foundation, it doesn’t actually look heavy onscreen.

    I reached out to celebrity makeup artist and creative Misha Shahzada for the scoop on how to pull of the perfect, modernized 70s-inspired look. “1970’s makeup offered a range of versatility–from bronzed skin and glossy lips to bold statement eyes and lower lashes,” she explains. “Now being 50 years later this the current products we have on the market, it’s easier to take bits and pieces of the 70s inspired looks with a simplified twist.” The ‘clean girl,’ dewy makeup look that we’ve all fallen in love with can be given a throwback treatment with the addition of a bold eye or a full beat finished with a glossy lip. When creating a retro makeup look for her clientele, Shahzada also takes hints from the era’s pop culture icons featured in film like Priscilla Presley (portrayed by Olivia DeJonge) in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 biographical drama Elvis.

    For Shahzada, focusing on one element of the face at a time is the key to keeping the look modern. Skin care takes precedent over all else to create a glowy (almost glossy) base with the help of Bubble Skincare’s Deep Dive Exfoliating Mask followed by a pump of their Slam Dunk Hydrating Moisturizer and a few drops of their bestselling Float On Soothing Facial Oil. With the skin left hydrated and dewy, additional coverage is only required where needed. “When it comes to skincare, the more consistent you are, the better,” she says. “Avoid over prepping your skin all at once, find out what your skin can tolerate and build from there.”

    Creating the rest of a modernized 70s look is simple. For the eyes, Shazada opts for a vibrant blue shade (her favorite is from Victoria Beckham Beauty’s Smoky Eye Brick in Royal) all over the lid; focusing especially on the inner corners. Next, she applies a black kajal eyeliner to the top and bottom lash line to create an elongated wing that she buffs out as the works. To finish, she recommends opting for some strip lashes or adding a few coats of mascara to the top and bottom lashes for a bold, doe-eyed look.

    If you’re ready to finally give soap brows a try, follow these steps below that Mellinger swears by to help achieve them. All you’ll need is a clear, glycerin-based soap, wax, or gel and an easy-to-use spoolie to whip your brows into shape in minutes—no brow-lamination appointment required. The trick is to pay special attention to coating all hairs, making sure none go without a layer of soap paste for a smooth finish.

    Step 1. If you’re creating them using soap rather than a wax or gel, opt for a clear, glycerin-based soap. This will ensure there is no color or white cast transferred to the brow.

    Step 2. Avoid getting the spoolie too wet. “You don’t want to make the paste too slippery or sudsy, or it won’t stay in place,” explains Mellinger.

    Step 3. Don’t dig into the soap too much with your spoolie, as it will make the paste too thick. A paste that is too thick and dry won’t stick well.

    Step 4. After you’ve achieved your ideal shape, try carefully smoothing it out with your finger for an extra-laminated look.

    Mellinger also happens to keep a few products in her kit at all times to create the perfect soap brow look, starting with West Barn Co’s Soap Brows Extra Strong and Prep Mist. “This is my favorite for my kit, as it’s small and comes in a tin—very kit friendly.” For an affordable option, Melligner uses a disposable spoolie with Pears’ classic Pure Gentle Soap. Neutrals in one and bright colors in another,” explains Goodwin. “I prefer to have mixed textures in each palette, meaning a blend of shimmers, mattes, and satins, organized by hue.” It could also be incredibly helpful to pay attention to the longevity of the eye shadow shades, potential product fallout (what happens when shadow migrates from the lid to the under-eye area), and the ability to build and blend pigments. Skin types also come into play, especially if you happen to have oily skin that can limit the wear time of certain formulas.

    Although there are a variety of eyeliners out there, most people stick to pencil or liquid. Celebrity makeup artist J Guerra shares his thoughts on the two. “Pencil eyeliners are versatile, simple to use, and more forgiving than liquid eyeliners,” he says. “Cleaning up any mistakes is much less drama. Pencils are also less of a commitment, as they tend to have a less permanent wear time. This makes them a great option for changing looks throughout the day, on a photo shoot, or going from a day to night look in real life.”

    There are other benefits to pencil eyeliner, Guerra says. “The soft, malleable, kohl texture [of a pencil liner] is excellent for creating a more blended, smudged, or worn-in eyeliner effect,” he says. “Just be sure to choose one that is long-wearing or waterproof so that it sets and lasts all day after smudging it into place. Pencil liners are also better options for sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers. The formulas of liquid liners may irritate sensitive eyes. The liquid texture can slip into or past the waterline during application and end up on contact lenses. Be careful to read pencil liner descriptions, as not all are approved for waterline use! Some formulas may irritate the eyes, particularly if the pencils include sparkles or shimmer. Some dyes may also be harmful to the waterline. Use the sharpened point of the pencil for precise and defined lines, or try using the side for a thicker line and smudgy finish.” 

    Guerra also has a few other notes on liquid liners. “Liquid eyeliner is long-lasting, delivers more definition, and creates a bolder, sharper line,” he says. It’s best suited for creating precise and defined lines, making it an excellent choice for sleek or more modernized dramatic eye looks. They offer greater control and accuracy, making it easier to create sharp lines, intricate designs, and precise detailing. Liquid eyeliners are often highly pigmented formulas that provide a more intense color payoff [compared] to the softness of pencils. The color payoff of these hues and bolder, more vibrant lines serve as a statement all on their own.”

    “Liquid eyeliner is better suited for oily eyelids since the wearability is stronger and won’t break down as easily as pencils,” Guerra says. “It’s also more suitable for hooded eye shapes since most liquid liners are transfer-resistant after they dry down and set. Remember to allow liquid eyeliner sufficient time to dry before blinking or opening your eyes fully (definitely don’t sneeze!) to prevent transfer or smudging. Liquid liners do require a bit more practice and patience than pencils! Most liquid liners are not meant to be used in the waterline, so if that’s part of the look, be sure to opt for a pencil liner in that area instead.”

    Since it’s been a while since I’ve last used such highly pigmented liquid eye shadows, I had to ask an expert for tips and tricks. Luckily, makeup artist Amrita Mehta was there to answer my call. 

    How do you recommend applying this product?

    “The Matte Fluid Eye Paints can be applied in a variety of different ways. I recommend working in thin layers and varying your tools to achieve different results. You can take the applicator straight to your eyelid or use a palette for a more controlled/precise application. Using these eye paints with a fluffy brush will result in a sheer wash of color. A flat brush is great for a solid, opaque application. An angled brush or eyeliner brush are my go-tos for a thin wing, cat eyes, or a graphic liner (my personal favorite!). A pencil brush is ideal for a pop of color in your inner corner or on the lower lash line. Last but not least, your fingers are great for an easy allover color on the lid or an on-the-go application. The eye paints are multipurpose and I find a different way to use the product every time I pick it up.”

    Is there a simple way to use this product for anyone who’s unfamiliar or inexperienced with liquid eye shadow?

    “The Matte Fluid Eye Paint are great for beginners and experts alike. Though the pigmentation can seem a bit intimidating at first, the liquid formula allows for plenty of playtime before setting and easy cleanup of any mistakes. I recommend you start with less product and add more (if needed) as you go. Don’t be afraid to mix colors to tone down or amp up different shades to create exactly what you’re looking for. They’re extremely versatile and really allow you to experiment making it hard to ‘mess up.’”

    Do you recommend using a primer beforehand?

    “Primer is optional but not necessary; it’s really up to you! Using a primer may give you a smoother canvas and a little more ‘slip,’ making it easier to blend out; but even without it, the fluid formula allows for this. When I do include primer in the process, I love to use the Shadow Fix Eye Primer from About-Face, which is long-wearing and lightweight. Once the eye paints dry down, they set themselves! It’s long-wearing, meaning no budge and no smudge.”

    Can they be layered or combined?

    I love mixing the Matte Fluid Eye paints on a palette or the back of my hand to create custom colors. The product is buildable so layering is also not an issue. I suggest using small amounts of the eye paint at a time when layering to avoid excess product buildup or flaking. Try applying Fractal Glitter Eye Paints on top of the matte formula for sparkle, shine, and dimension!”

    Can they be paired with powder eyeshadows?

    “Definitely! You can layer a powder over the matte formula once they’ve dried down—after 20 to 30 seconds of playtime. Because of this, they also work great as an eye shadow base and help create extra vibrance and opacity that powder formulas alone sometimes lack.”

Use your pinky for stabilization and let your applicator glide smoothly and steadily across the skin to avoid shaky application or rogue pen marks.     Approach applying liquid eyeliner the same way and make it as easy as possible for yourself. If you make a mistake, no worries! Have some makeup remover on hand and try again. Making mistakes will always be part of the process of learning something new, so why should using liquid eyeliner be any different? If you can’t get that perfect flick on the end of your wing, simply dip a flat makeup brush into some oil-based makeup remover and gently remove your little oops.

    Alternately, if you have on a full face and are worried about completely decimating your base makeup, try camouflaging your mistake with concealer for a quick and painless clean-up. It will save you from having to remove all your makeup and start from scratch. If you’re struggling to get the brush saturated with ink, consider storing your eyeliner with the brush facing downward.
