Witherspoon is the executive producer of the musical drama Daisy Jones & the Six, which earned three Golden Globe nominations—helping Amazon MGM Studios achieve a total of 16 Globe nominations, marking the studio’s biggest year ever. “Oh my gosh, I love everything about the show. From all the incredible performances, the original music, and the costumes,” said Witherspoon, who attended the party with her son, Deacon Phillippe. “I’m so excited because we just won two Emmys at the technical Emmys today. Jeffrey Wright, a Golden Globe winner in 2004 and a nominee for his lead performance in American Fiction, was among the first guests to arrive at the cocktail party. He settled in a corner banquette near the bar and happily posed for photos. Another previous Globe winner in attendance was Pike, who was honored with a Golden Globe in 2020 for her work in the dark comedy I Care a Lot. This season, she received her fourth Globe nod for portraying a decadent, shallow mother in Emerald Fennell’s dark comedy Saltburn.
“I love that my character is quotable. Someone on my flight over, one of the flight attendants came up, and started quoting the lines, and that’s when you know you hit a zeitgeist,” said Pike, dressed elegantly in a ballerina-type frock for the party. “Truly, the whole movie, the way that it caught on, I think it captured a dark, vampiric imagination in all of us. Everyone is loving it and I love that.”
As a showrunner, it’s Cody Heller’s job to oversee every detail of a television series, from its first scripts to its final edit. But on hidden-camera comedy Jury Duty, Heller faced an unusual challenge: She couldn’t meet series lead Ronald Gladden until filming had wrapped.
The entire premise of the Amazon Freevee show hinges on average-guy Gladden believing that he’s serving as the foreman for a real jury. What he doesn’t know is that everyone else in the courtroom is an actor trying to wring as much comedy as possible from his experience. So it was imperative that Heller and the rest of the Jury Duty crew stay hidden during their three-week shoot. “Unlike normal television, where you have action and cut and take two, we had none of that,” Heller tells Vanity Fair. “As soon as Ronald arrived on set, it was like, ‘Okay, we’re on.’ That was really fun and exhilarating and terrifying.”
It’s something of a miracle that Heller and her team managed to pull off the stunt. Over eight increasingly absurdist episodes, Gladden gets selected for a jury, hears a case, and delivers a verdict—all without catching on to the fact that he’s actually a modern-day Truman Burbank starring in his own TV show. Emmy voters have taken note of the feat, awarding Jury Duty with four nominations including outstanding comedy series. The show has also been a breakout for Amazon’s four-year-old ad-supported streaming service, but Heller says that because of the writers strike, there’ve been no official conversations about bringing it back for another season. “My hope is that the AMPTP can be a little bit more like Ronald Gladden and approach things with a little bit more humanity and that we can reach a fair deal soon,” she says.
With its hybrid scripted-reality format, Jury Duty was unlike anything Heller had worked on before. The veteran comedy writer, who cocreated the supernatural comedy Deadbeat and whose credits also include Wilfred and Kidding, says she was “shocked and flattered” when she got the call about showrunning and executive producing an inventive new project from The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. “I did some soul-searching and was like, this is terrifying; there’s a true chance of failure,” she says. “But I was like, I want to do this.”
One of Heller’s first moves was to hire as many writer-performers as possible for Jury Duty’s writers room. That way, some of them—like writer and The Sex Lives of College Girls actor Mekki Leeper—could be cast in the show to help improvise new story beats on the fly based on how Gladden responded to what was being thrown his way. Another key early decision was to bring in writers and actors with actual legal knowledge—Alan Barinholtz, who played the judge, is a retired attorney, and father of actor Ike Barinholtz; and both attorneys (Trisha LaFache and Evan Williams) have real-life legal experience—to help make the court proceedings authentic. “My primary concern was, let’s build this village early on because it’s going to take a village to make this fake village for Ronald, our hero,” Heller says. “We got really lucky and found some incredible people, and I feel like it was lightning in a bottle.”
Though Gladden deals with some truly outrageous situations on Jury Duty—among them, James Marsden, Emmy-nominated for playing a heightened version of himself, calls the paparazzi and forces the jury to be sequestered—a lot of the footage on the cutting-room floor was much more mundane. Heller says that was by design. They needed to build up what she refers to as Gladden’s “reality bank” so that he’d believe he was experiencing real life and be more forgiving of some of the sillier things they threw his way. “We would have days where literally nothing funny would happen, and it would just be a boring court case all day long. That was us kind of putting money into the reality bank in order to then, the next day, be able to do something really funny and big,” she explains. “To keep that balance was a constant effort.”

Jake Gyllenhaal channels the late Patrick Swayze in a remake of “Road House,” but the new version takes a detour to the UFC octagon. Cameras were out to capture a staged fight featuring Gyllenhaal’s character amid bouts of a real UFC event in Las Vegas on Saturday. (Watch the videos below.)
In reviving Swayze’s bar bouncer who tried to keep the peace but couldn’t resist kicking ass, Gyllenhaal traded blows in a scene with former UFC fighter Jay Hieron.
The scripted battle featured Gyllenhaal’s character leveling Hieron with a flying knee.
It’s unclear whether the Zen-like mien of Swayze’s Dalton will make it into the reimagined movie, but we know his chiseled physique will. Gyllenhaal looked absolutely shredded in another go-round as a combat-sport athlete. Remember his boxer in 2015′s “Southpaw”?
Gyllenhaal also had a tense weigh-in scene, in which he trash-talks and strikes his opponent, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“I can’t even believe I trained six weeks for this shit, to fight this piece of shit,” Gyllenhaal says in the staged altercation. “Just gimme the belt now. Come on, motherfucker, let’s go!”
He also took in the love of the crowd as his character entered the octagon.
UFC great Conor McGregor makes his acting debut in the Amazon Prime Video movie, which does not have a release date yet.
But it does have expectations.
“‘Road House’ is a home run for us,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said last year. “Not only is it a nod to fans of the original, but it is also a big, fun, broad audience movie.”
Check out photos of the cinematic slugfest, and a moment in the crowd with Gyllenhaal and McGregor watching the real action:

After journeying to the Norns in your absence, they told me many things. First, they claimed that another live-action adaptation of a video game must precede our own. Only then will the nine realms be ready to hear our story.
Next they told me that Amazon Prime announced that it will soon officially order production to begin on our live-action series, and will feature Rafe Judkins from Wheel of Time as the showrunner.
The Norns went on to say that the focus of the story will be the events from the first God of War game, set in the Norse saga from 2018. You remember—where we climbed the highest peak in all the nine realms in order to spread your mother’s ashes at the summit. Many a tears were jerked during the telling, I am told. Including my own. Hopefully this series honors our story well.
My hopes are high, as the Norns said the show will be written by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, who wrote Iron Man and Children of Men. Mimir tells me that the latter film is one of the finest of the 21st century … whenever that is … and tells a gripping tale full of violence and pathos. A story worth hearing, indeed.
Santa Monica Studio’s creative director Cory Barlog will serve as an executive producer, which is also auspicious. While I say that Zeus is my father, Cory is my true creator, and yours, too, Atreus. I hope that he guides our little ship over the perilous seas, past the wreckage of other live-action adaptations like Cowboy Bebop, and lands us safe in the Port of the Primetime Emmy.
The people of the Amazon seem excited as well. The Norns proclaim that Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, has said, “God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling. We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.” He does well to be honored to tell our story. It is much easier than having to have lived it, as you and I know.
However, there are still gaps in the prophecy. Not even the Norns could yet divine who shall make up the cast. I hope that one of them is Christopher Judge. He provided a voice for me in God of War and God of War Ragnarok, and was recently given the Best Performance award at the Game Awards. These show runners would be fools not to include him. If they refuse, they shall be hearing from me.
