Now, the shocking incident has left the internet buzzing, with many questioning the role of livestreaming in real-time tragedies.

    TikTok Livestream Leads To Arrest In Fatal Hit-And-Run

    According to the Zion Police Department, Tynesha McCarty-Wroten was arrested on Tuesday, Dec. 23, in connection with the death of 59-year-old Darren Lucas, who was walking home from his grocery store shift in Zion, Illinois, on Nov. 3. Authorities say numerous tips from the public led investigators to a TikTok video showing McCarty-Wroten livestreaming at the time of the crash. Forensic analysis confirmed the video’s timestamp matched the time of the fatal incident.

    Video Shows Moment Tea Tyme Allegedly Struck Victim

    The viral screen recording allegedly captures McCarty-Wroten speaking into her phone just before a loud thump. According to the video, “F—, f—, f— … I just hit somebody,” the driver reportedly says, as a passenger asks what happened. The TikTok account associated with the video was later made private, and the user biography, noting Zion, Illinois, was deleted.

    Furthermore, the Lake County State Attorney’s Office has charged McCarty-Wroten with reckless homicide and aggravated use of an electronic communication device. Police said she was arrested almost immediately after a warrant was issued. It was even noted that she had been seen attempting to leave her home with packed bags. Additionally, authorities confirmed an 8-year-old minor was in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

    Tragic Crash Sparks Livestream Accountability Debate

    Details of the case reveal that Lucas was crossing an intersection when McCarty-Wroten’s vehicle struck him. Despite her claims to police that she thought she had a green light, investigators allege the car ran a red light near the speed limit and made no attempt to slow or avoid the impact. First responders rushed Lucas to Vista Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead.

    The controversy surrounding Tea Tyme didn’t end there. Reports say she hosted another livestream just days after Lucas’ death, asking followers for donations to take a “mental leave” from content creation, sparking widespread outrage across social media and adding fuel to the ongoing debate about responsibility and accountability in the age of live-streamed content.

  • ‘Accessible housing is how we solve it’: Dr. Terence Lester talks housing in Atlanta and more

    Dr. Terence Lester, founder and executive director of Love Beyond Walls, dropped by The Atlanta Voice on Monday, Aug. 25, to discuss the unhoused and affordable housing and what could be done about both in Atlanta.

    Lester has many conversations about how a city growing as fast as Atlanta can ever truly keep up with the number of people living on its streets, in its shelters, and in its motels. His answers can be both complex and quite simple.

    “Accessible housing is how we solve it,” Lester said. “You know many Americans, United States citizens, are one paycheck away?”

    According to data from RentCafe.com, Atlanta is one of the most expensive cities in the country. The average rent for an apartment in Atlanta is $1,773 per month.

    Lester believes the city and state political leaders can help create an environment where there can be luxury apartments and accessible housing (he doesn’t like to use the more popular phrase, “affordable housing”) in the city.

    “People who hold or occupy spaces of political power can address some of these issues,” Lester said. “Do we create a task force to think of how to create more housing? Do we put caps on the rising rents?”

    Reframing the narrative of homelessness in order to humanize the people who are enveloped in the issue.

    “We have to keep the narrative in the forefront of people’s minds,” Lester said. “People strategically make suffering invisible, whether by public policy, public sanitation, or displacement. If people aren’t seen, then people aren’t part of the conversation.”

    Having experienced brief periods of homelessness as a young person, Lester said he wants to change what it means to be poor and unhoused in the country, not just in Atlanta. He says this is the type of work he, his wife Cecilia, his daughter Zion, 17, and Terence II, 14, are also involved in.

    “I’m really passionate about this. I wish we cared more about building people than building people,” Lester said.

    Lester explained that it would be as simple as jumping in a car and riding in any direction in Atlanta to find homelessness.

    “Correta Scott King said poverty is violence,” Lester said. “Poverty is not just about economics; it’s social, it’s spiritual, physical, psychological, and environmental. When you see a person standing on the street corner who you know is from this city, you can see the erosion of their soul. Poverty has impacted their whole well-being.”

    More discussions involving “the actual people who love the city and the people from here”, Lester said. He wants more local forums on homelessness and “accessible” housing to include the people it directly affects.

    “We need to reframe the language of what’s affordable. Affordability doesn’t solve the issue of homelessness because you’re talking about people being able to afford something they can’t afford,” Lester said.

    Woman found dead, husband rescued in Zion National Park

    A woman was found dead Wednesday, and her husband — who was rescued — reported that the couple suffered hypothermia while on a hiking trip in Zion National Park in Utah, officials said.

    The two were discovered Wednesday morning by visitors in the Narrows — a gorge considered to be the narrowest section of Zion Canyon, the National Park Service said in a news release Thursday.

    The 31-year-old woman died on scene, the park service said, while her 33-year-old husband was taken to the Zion Emergency Operations Center for treatment. No names were provided.

    The couple had set out Tuesday on a permitted 16-mile hike, but overnight, they became “dangerously cold and experienced symptoms consistent with hypothermia,” the park service said.

    The husband told park rangers that, in the early morning hours Wednesday, the couple came to a stop about one-and-a-half miles from the north end of Riverside Walk, a paved trail which runs from the Temple of Sinawava to the Narrows. The husband went on to get help, while his wife stayed behind, the park service said.

    The visitors who came upon the man helped get him down the trail, while others went to his wife and administered CPR until search and rescue personnel arrived on scene.

    Along with the park service, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner are investigating the woman’s death.

    The Narrows is one of the most popular areas in Zion, according to the park service. However, hiking it requires people to walk in the Virgin River, which in some places is only 20 to 30 feet wide. Depending on the time of year, the park service explains on its website, the Virgin River can “range from ankle deep to full swims.”

    “Flash flooding and hypothermia are constant dangers,” the park service writes.

    Hikers are not allowed to undertake the 16-mile Virgin River hike without a wilderness permit.
