Jan. 18 is a huge day in music history. It’s when The Beatles first appeared on American charts, and Bad Company was born. Breakthrough Hits and Milestones
Milestones and breakthrough moments don’t get much bigger than these, from Jan. 18:
1964: The Beatles entered the U.S. charts for the first time with “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” which debuted at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100. It got to No. 1 just two weeks later, starting an astonishing streak of seven No. 1 singles in one year.
1974: Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke, former members of Free, joined forces with Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople and King Crimson member Boz Burrell to form a new band called Bad Company. The supergroup has since sold over 40 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year.
Cultural Milestones
Important cultural moments from Jan. 18 in the rock world include:
1989: Stevie Wonder became the youngest living Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee. He was inducted by Paul Simon and shared the date with other notable inductees from that year, including The Rolling Stones and The Temptations.
2016: Eagles founding member and co-lead singer Glenn Frey died from multiple health issues at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He founded the band with drummer Don Henley in the early 1970s, and together they wrote most of the band’s hits, including “New Kid in Town” and “Take It Easy.”
Notable Recordings and Performances
Some iconic performances also took place on Jan. 18, such as the following:
1984: Van Halen kicked off their huge 1984 Tour with a show at the Jacksonville Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida. The tour was a massive production consisting of 101 shows over two legs.
1991: The second edition of the Rock in Rio festival took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with acts such as Guns N’ Roses, George Michael, Prince, INXS, A-ha, Billy Idol, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Joe Cocker, and Faith No More entertaining the crowds at the Maracanã Stadium over nine days. The show was also broadcast live and watched by more than half a billion people in 55 countries.
From The Beatles making themselves known across the pond to some of the biggest names in music playing for crowds in Brazil, these were the biggest rock-related events from Jan. 18 in years gone by.

Musical icon Stevie Wonder took the stage at The Sun Rose on the Sunset Strip Friday night to help his friend, producer Adam Blackstone, celebrate an album release with an intimate performance after he offered up some words of wisdom.
“Clearly we are in a spiritual war,” Wonder told the crowd. “I celebrate the blessing, the spirit, of God…God is a spirit of the blessing of goodness. I say it with love in my heart…Using love against the weapon of hate, at the end of the day that is the key.”
And then he launched into a rendition of his hit song “Higher Ground,” a song the 75-year-old singer wrote for his 1973 album “Innervisions,” to a jubilant crowd. Wonder was in attendance to celebrate the release of “Humble Magic,” the second album for the Sun Rose musical director Blackstone, who has worked with a slew of talent included Rihanna, Jill Scott, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Eminem, Janet Jackson and was the magic behind the Super Bowl LIV Halftime show with Shakira and J-Lo.
Blackstone is now the creative director for the sexy live performance space on the first floor of The Sun Rose hotel, a former Pendry property that flipped to the Sun Rose last month. The club had been the site for the House of Blues, and part of the deal for developers on the site is a requirement to maintain a live music venue. The Sun Rose with Blackstone – a wildly talented, multi-instrumentalist – is a welcome addition to Sunset Boulevard.
Legendary musician Stevie Wonder is hitting the road.
Announced Thursday and dubbed “Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart,” the tour features ten performances across the U.S., with two Michigan stops at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on Oct. 22 and Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena on Oct. 30.
The 25-time Grammy-Award winner’s tour aims to send a powerful message, advocating for “joy over anger, kindness over recrimination, and peace over war.” These performances come at a pivotal moment in American politics, just ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Wonder’s stop in Detroit holds particular significance, as the city is central to the nation’s music and civil rights history — both of which have heavily influenced Wonder’s legacy.
The tour kicks off on Oct. 8 in Pittsburgh and concludes on Oct. 30 in Grand Rapids.

The final night of the Democratic National Convention saw current United States Vice President Kamala Harris accept her party’s nomination for the presidency. After three and a half years of making history as the first Black vice president of the United States, Harris, who is part South Asian by way of her mother, and Jamaican on her father’s side, looks to make an even greater historic impact as the second ever Black and first female President of the United States.
During her acceptance speech Harris said she wanted to be a president for all Americans.
“To be fair, for my entire career I’ve only had one client: the people,” she said.

Harris took time to thank United States President Joseph R. Biden, her family, her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff (Thursday was the couple’s 10th wedding anniversary), and the many people in her life that helped her get to that point. That list includes her sister Mya and nieces, god-children, and extended family.
She also took time to answer Republican critiques that said that her campaign rallies failed to address issues that voters want to know her stances on. On the economy, Harris said she will implement an “opportunity economy” upon winning the presidency. She brought the crowd to its feet when she spoke of passing a “middle-class tax cut.”
“The middle class is where I came from,” she said. Harris talked about growing up in Oakland and in the other states that her family moved to when she and her sister Mya were kids. Mya was one of the featured speakers during the evening. So was North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, who called Harris a fighter that America needs in the White House.
During her speech, which began just after 9 p.m. (Central) and ended shortly after 10 p.m., Harris also addressed the border and the ongoing war in Israel and Palestine. A single heckler could be heard screaming, “Free Palestine” during that portion of her speech. Harris promised to make ending that war a priority of the Harris/Walz administration.
“I know where I stand and I know where the United States belongs,” she said.

The state of Georgia was well represented on the speaker front this week. Senator Raphael Warnock spoke on Monday night and Congresswoman Lucy McBath (D-GA 7th District) was one of the featured speakers on Thursday night. McBath, a well-known gun control advocate, spoke about the topic alongside other state representatives. During her remarks McBath said electing leaders like Harris will go a long way to getting gun laws in place that will save lives. McBath was joined on stage by family members of gun violence victims.
Meanwhile, Republican Party vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance was in Georgia on Thursday. The Ohio Senator made a campaign stop in Valdosta, the 18th largest city in the state.
Sharpton said that the night’s proceedings were the realization of former presidential candidate Shirley Chisholm’s dreams, the culmination of the American experiment, and the end of the Trump era.
“If we stay together, Black, white, Latina, Asian, joy, joy, joy, joy will come in the morning,” said Sharpton.
Even legendary actor Morgan Freeman contributed to the final day of the convention by narrating a hype video that played on the arena’s big screens before the Chicks performed the National Anthem.
Award-winning singer/songwriter Pink, who was born and raised in Pennsylvania, a crucial battleground state this election season, performed one of her many hit songs, “What About Us,” on Thursday night.

Wonder and his wife, Prince George’s County native Tomeeka Robyn Bracy, stopped by Pro Cakes — located inside the Iverson Mall in Temple Hills — on Tuesday.
“I saw three individuals standing there — one of them had long dreads, and I said to myself, ‘Is that Stevie Wonder?’” Lee, the owner of Pro Cakes, told WTOP.

It was the famous snickerdoodles that brought Stevie Wonder to Prince George’s County’s Pro Cakes.

“‘Why would he be in Iverson Mall?’ That’s what I’m thinking in my head,” Lee said.
It turns out that Wonder and Bracy were in the market for a specific baked good.
“His wife had come in the day before and she liked the cookie so much she decided to have him come back,” Lee said.
The cookie in question? Pro Cakes’ snickerdoodle.
“The cookies Stevie liked are the snickerdoodles. They are very popular right now,” Lee said. “At Pro Cakes, we make all of our cookies fresh from scratch, and we use brown sugar for our cookie dough. That sets us apart from our competitors.”
Lee said he can’t settle on his favorite song in Wonder’s discography: “Honestly, I just hit the play button and just keep ’em rolling.”
And now he has another reason to be a fan — Wonder left a $100 tip for the Pro Cakes staff.
Now that the video of Stevie’s appearance has gone viral, customers have been asking a lot of questions about Pro Cakes’ famous customer.
“I wouldn’t say this is where celebrities hang out,” Lee said, laughing. “No, the prices are not going up.”
Lee has owned Pro Cakes for the last six years and describes the experience as a dream come true, saying Wonder’s visit is a cherry on top.
“This kinda feels like a dream, to be honest,” Lee said as he stood behind the counter of Pro Cakes.
This isn’t Wonder’s first time charming D.C.-area audiences. In 2015, he performed a five-song set as part of a free pop-up show at the D.C. Armory Mall.
Beyond Wonder’s musical success, including his stature as the most-awarded male solo artist in Grammys history, he is widely recognized for his civil rights activism and is known to blend his artistic and political pursuits. His 1980 rendition of “Happy Birthday” was influential in the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday as a federal holiday. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.
“It was good to have such a legendary figure show up at this mall the day before Juneteenth,” Lee said. “I mean, it was perfect timing.”

She may have sung that she’s an “Anti-Hero,” but at the Grammys 2024, Taylor Swift proved herself to be anything but. By taking home the Album of the Year Grammy for Midnights, Swift broke a record she had previously shared with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Simon. Each of the men won Album of the Year three times, and Swift has now received the honor four times, more than any other artist.
“I would love to tell you that this is the best moment of my life but I feel this happy when I finish a song,” she said while accepting the record-breaking award, which was announced by surprise presenter Celine Dion. “For me, the award is the work,” Swift continued. “All I want to do is to keep being able to do this.”
“All I want to do is keep doing this, so thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to let me do what I love so much,” she said.
Swift has now won 14 Grammys over her career, and used her first win of the evening, for Pop Vocal Album, to drop some news of her own: She’s releasing new music. Noting that the win was her 13th at the Grammys, her lucky number, Swift finally shared what she’s been working on at Electric Lady Studios during all those visits.
“I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out on April 19,” she said in that speech. “It’s called The Tortured Poets Department. I’m gonna go and post the cover right now backstage. Thank you. I love you. Thank you.”

For three and a half arduous hours, the Grammy’s held viewers captive…delaying the Big Four categories until the very end with Trevor Noah monologues, performances by Stevie Wonder, Lizzo, Harry Styles, and an ode to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. But, at the end of the day, history was still made.

Beyoncé, who arrived late after being stuck in traffic, became the most decorated artist in Grammy history, earning her 32nd Grammy award for Best Dance/Electronic Recording. Fans of Beyoncé, however, were outraged when she lost Album of the Year to Harry Styles. This makes it the fourth year where she was nominated for AOTY and lost.
But that’s not all…Kim Petras became the first transgender woman to win a Grammy in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for her song “Unholy” with Sam Smith. The catchy song dominated the Billboard Hot 100, which they also performed in Satanic-chic clothing.

Ticketmaster’s worst nightmare and our queen, Taylor Swift, won Best Music Video for “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) (10 Minute Version).” Not only that, but she stood and cheered for every act and winner. Drinking wine and just vibing at the Grammys? My exact vibe.
Lizzo is the first Black woman to win Record of the Year for “About Damn Time” since Whitney Houston for “I Will Always Love You.” She looked equally ecstatic for friend Harry Styles, who won the first and last awards of the night: Best Pop Vocal Album and Album Of The Year, for his album Harry’s House.
LOS ANGELES — Coolio, the rapper who was among hip-hop’s biggest names of the 1990s with hits including “Gangsta’s Paradise” and “Fantastic Voyage,” died Wednesday at age 59, his manager said.
Coolio died at the Los Angeles home of a friend, longtime manager Jarez Posey told The Associated Press. The cause was not immediately clear.
Coolio won a Grammy for best solo rap performance for “Gangsta’s Paradise,” the 1995 hit from the soundtrack of the Michelle Pfeiffer film “Dangerous Minds” that sampled Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song “Pastime Paradise” and was played constantly on MTV.
The Grammy, and the height of his popularity, came in 1996, amid a fierce feud between the hip-hop communities of the two coasts, which would take the lives of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. soon after.
Coolio managed to stay mostly above the conflict.
“I’d like to claim this Grammy on behalf of the whole hip-hop nation, West Coast, East Coast, and worldwide, united we stand, divided we fall,” he said from the stage as he accepted the award.
Born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., in Monessen, Pennsylvania south of Pittsburgh, Coolio moved to Compton, California. He spent some time as a teen in Northern California, where his mother sent him because she felt the city was too dangerous.
He said in interviews that he started rapping at 15 and knew by 18 it was what he wanted to do with his life, but would go to community college and work as a volunteer firefighter and in airport security before devoting himself full-time to the hip-hop scene.
His career took off with the 1994 release of his debut album on Tommy Boy Records, “It Takes a Thief.” It’s opening track, “Fantastic Voyage,” would reach No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
A year later, “Gangsta’s Paradise” would become a No. 1 single, with its dark opening lyrics:
“As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I take a look at my life and realize there’s not much left, ‘cause I’ve been blastin’ and laughin’ so long, that even my mama thinks that my mind is gone.”
Social media lit up with reactions to the unexpected death.
“This is sad news,” Ice Cube said on Twitter. “I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry. Rest In Peace, @Coolio.”
“Weird Al” Yankovic tweeted “RIP Coolio” along with a picture of the two men hugging.
Coolio had said in an interview at the time it was released that he wasn’t cool with Yankovic’s 1996 “Gangsta’s Paradise” parody, “Amish Paradise.” But the two later made peace.
The rapper would never again have a song nearly as big as “Gangsta’s Paradise,” but had subsequent hits with 1996’s “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” (1996), and 1997’s “C U When U Get There.”
His career album sales totaled 4.8 million, with 978 million on-demand streams of his songs, according to Luminate. He would be nominated for six Grammys overall.
And with his distinctive persona he would become a cultural staple, acting occasionally, starring in a reality show about parenting called “Coolio’s Rules,” providing a voice for an episode of the animated show “Gravity Falls” and providing the theme music for the Nickelodeon sitcom “Kenan & Kel.”
