  • Behold, ‘Varanasi’, the Next Movie from S.S. Rajamouli

    Three years ago, Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli released RRR, a period piece action epic that broke through to the mainstream and became a global sensation. After the just-released action epic Baahubali from this past October, Rajamouli’s got another film up his sleeve: Varanasi—or for those in non-Indian countries, Globetrotter or Timetrotter.

    Revealed at a massive press event in India, the film is set across multiple time periods. From 512 CE to 2027 and 7200, from the titular Indian city to Africa and Antarctica, there’s a lot going on in the trailer, which provides sweeping shots of the various locations and eras. During the event, Rajamouli revealed he shot the film for IMAX, and it definitely shows as the score and scope of the film continues to expand.

    While light on plot details, we know our main character is Maresh Babu as Rudrha, who wields a trident and rides a bull into battle. Other stars include Prithviraj Sukumaran as Kumbha and Priyanka Chopra as Mandikini, who both appear to be present day characters, whereas Rudrha is from an earlier era.

    Look for Varanasi to hit theaters sometime in 2027.

    Ahead of the official pictures being released, various leaked images surfaced online from the ceremony. Rahul appeared in a lavender-colored sherwani, which made him look regal. Harini was seen next to him in an orange lehenga that was striking for its lively appearance.

    As Sipligunj unveiled his special moments, various fans congratulated him as he began a new chapter in his life.

    Who is Rahul Sipligunj?

    Rahul Sipligunj was born in Hyderabad on August 22, 1989. He started his musical career in 2009 and quickly became a well-known artist owing to his indie Telugu music videos.

    With his magnificent voice, Rahul became part of various Telugu films as a playback singer. However, it was Naatu Naatu, performed alongside Kaala Bhairava, that gave him the global recognition, especially after the song won the Academy Award. The Telangana government even honored him with Rs 1 crore in recognition of this accomplishment, praising his contribution to the state’s international reputation.

    Apart from RRR, the singer also crooned for various films, including Naga Chaitanya’s Josh, Jr NTR starrer Dhammu, Racha, Rangasthalam with Ram Charan, and Pawan Kalyan’s Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu.

    In addition to singing, he also ventured into television, winning Bigg Boss Telugu Season 3. Following his appearance on the reality show, he served as a co-judge in Super Singer 3 (Telugu).

    Interestingly, Rahul had even made his debut as an actor in Telugu cinema with the drama flick Rangamarthanda (2023), directed by Krishna Vamsi.

    RRR (Rise, Roar, and Revolt) made its theatrical premiere on March 25, 2022, and received a massive response from audiences worldwide. It not only grossed a remarkable collection but also became the highest-grossing Indian film globally in 2022. Recently, RRR’s official distributor, Pen Studios, teased its rerelease.

    Set against the backdrop of the British Raj, the film follows the story of two fictional Indian revolutionaries fighting against the British. Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, it features N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan in the lead roles. Additionally, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, and others were seen in supporting roles.

    Made on a hefty budget, RRR opened with around $28.7 million worldwide on its first day, marking the highest opening day for an Indian film. It earned approximately $170 million worldwide during its theatrical run.

    Will Jr. NTR & Ram Charan’s RRR be rereleased in theatres?

    Recently, the official film distributor of RRR took to X (formerly Twitter) and engaged the audience by asking, “Guysssss Full form of #RRR?. After active participation from the audience, the studio later replied, “RRR – RE – RELEASE.” This indicates that makers are planning for its rerelease in theaters. However, the official date has not been announced yet.

    For those unaware, Pen Studios has acquired RRR’s theatrical rights for the North Indian Market, including all languages. Additionally, the company holds electronic, digital, and satellite rights for Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada languages.

    Fan speculation suggests that RRR might be scheduled for rerelease on May 20, coinciding with Jr. NTR’s birthday. Meanwhile, Jr. NTR is gearing up for his upcoming film, Devara: Part 1, set to be released in October 2024.

    It will be intriguing to see when the makers reveal the details of the rerelease. At the same, it will matter whether the RRR will once again break all records.

    Jr NTR has bagged the Best Actor in Telugu award at the South Indian International Movie Awards 2023 (SIIMA) in Dubai. This event transpired on Friday. The actor won the award for the role of Komaram Bheem in SS Rajamouli’s RRR. He accepted the award on the stage amid applause and cheers from the audience. The actor also gave a speech and it is winning hearts.

    Jr NTR wins Best Actor for RRR at SIIMA

    Jr NTR accepted the Best Actor for RRR and thanked three people for making this happen. The actor said, “Firstly, I would like to thank my Jakkanna, my director Mr Rajamouli for believing in me again and again that I will do justice to the Komaram Bheem character. Secondly, I would like to thank my co-star, my brother, friend Charan for standing beside as a pillar of support for RRR”

    He ended the speech by thanking his fans and his heartfelt words have melted hearts. “I would like to thank my last but not least, my fans. For holding me in my hurdles, making me stand up every time I fall down,  wiping every tear from my eyes, feeling bad when I’m sad, and for laughing whenever I did, I bow down to all my fans who have stood by my side throughout.”

    This is not the first time the RRR actor has expressed his words to fans in such a way. On many occasions, he has shown his utmost respect to fans and even got emotional at times.

    Upcoming projects

    Meanwhile, Jr NTR is currently busy shooting for his next, Devara with Koratala Siva. The film marks the reunion of the actor and director duo after their blockbuster film Janatha Garage. Janhvi Kapoor is the female lead and Saif Ali Khan plays the role of the antagonist. Anirudh Ravichander is the music composer for the film. Devara is scheduled to be released in April 2024

    Apart from this, Pinkvilla has exclusively revealed that Jr NTR will join Hrithik Roshan in War 2 directed by Ayan Mukerji. He will be locking horns with Hrithik Roshan in War 2 and it’s going to be an epic action adventure. Director Vetrimaaran recently confirmed teaming up with Jr NTR for a film. Out of them, the six members of RRR who were chosen include the film’s lead cast, Jr NTR and Ram Charan, music composer MM Keeravani, lyricist Chandrabose, cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar, and production designer Sabu Cyril.     Elated upon receiving the honour, Jr NTR released an official statement where he expressed his gratitude for receiving an invite, and congratulated the other members of the “RRR family”.     Although SS Rajamouli was left out, of The Academy list, the film director proved his magnanimity by congratulating the RRR team for the honour. “Extremely proud that 6 members of our RRR team have been invited as members for The Academy Awards this year. Congratulations Tarak, Charan, Peddanna, Sabu sir, Senthil &Chandrabose garu. Also, congrats to the members from Indian Cinema who received the invitation this year,” he tweeted, adding a smiley emoji at the end.

    Fans react to SS Rajamouli not getting an invite from The Academy

    SS Rajamoui’s name not being on The Academy list did not sit well with the audience, who claimed that the filmmaker deserved a position on the list. While one disappointed user wrote, “List is incomplete without you SSR,” another quipped, “Happy for Ram Charan but equally feeling sad that creator of RRR is not invited as a member.” A third individual expressed their confidence in the filmmaker as they commented, “Captain, you don’t need an invitation from them. You are above that. Let’s rock world cinema with SSMB29.”

    Indian celebrities joining The Academy list

    The Academy released an extensive list of 398 new members who will be joining the community in 2024. Some of the other Indian celebrities to have joined the committee include producers Karan Johar and Siddharth Roy Kapur, directors Mani Ratnam and Chaitanya Tamhane, and documentary filmmaker Shaunak Sen.

The actor shares that he would not want to travel anywhere for his film unless the producer or director is from Hollywood. The Game Changer actor shares that he wants to stick to the Indian culture and educate the strong sentiments of India through his films. Ram says that there’s a lot of dignity in Indian stories. “Nowadays when you see it, it’s not South Indian North Indian movie, it’s about Indian mitta ka stories,” he says, reports an entertainment news portal. At present, I can only assume that it would be a 10-part film”. Calling it a long-held dream, Rajamouli added,” Every film I make, I feel that I’m learning something to ultimately make Mahabharata.     Now what is so special about making the Mahabharata, as we all know the story about it? I will tell the Mahabharata in my own way. “The Mahabharata (story) will be the same, but the characters will be enhanced, and the inter-relationships between the characters will be added”. Well, he lives up to the tag of being the Kaif visionary filmmaker.     RRR actor Ram Charan hosted a star-studded party in Hyderabad for his birthday on 27th March. The grand bash was attended by almost every well-known celebrity from Telugu cinema. His co-star Jr. NTR was absent which lead to speculation that things are not going right between the two actors. A couple of unseen pictures from the intimate celebration hit the internet and the actor is seen sharing loving moments with his wife. The couple called for a close affair with a handful of friends and family members in attendance. Several photos of Lakshmi Pranathi’s birthday are now doing rounds on the internet. RRR garnered fame across the world winning several international accolades. The film also bagged Oscars 2023 for its popular track Naatu Naatu in the category of best Original song. The team is currently relishing the success of RRR and even the fans were spotted celebrating the big achievement.     The world has been grooving to the RRR song Naatu Naatu. The song made India proud by winning at Oscars 2023. It won the Best Original Song at the Academy Awards and also at the Golden Globe Awards. And that is not all, back home, the song won the BollywoodLife.com Awards 2023. Nominated in the Best Song – South category, the song was a clear winner with the maximum votes from fans and the celeb jury. The song is composed by M. M. Keeravani, penned by Chandrabose and rendered by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava. Picturised on two of the biggest Telugu stars, Jr NTR and Ram Charan, song has been a rage ever since the teasers went out even before RRR release. Expressing joy over the latest win, lyricist Chandrabose expressed, “BollywoodLife.com has awarded the best song Award to Naatu Naatu. I am very excited and happy. The other songs that were nominated in the Best Song categories along with Naatu Naatu are Megham Karukatha from Thiruchitrambalam, Naatu Naatu from RRR, O Sita from Sita Ramam. The other winners in the South Cinema categories are Best Actor: Rishab Shetty for Kantara, Best Actress: Mrunal Thakur for Sita Ramam, Best Director: Vipin Das for Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, Best Supporting Role: Murali Sharma for Godfather, Best Film: Kantara and Best Song: Naatu Naatu from RRR.

    Telugu star, Ram Charan is currently enjoying the big win of his blockbuster film RRR, at the Oscars. The film, which was released in March 2022, broke several records at the box office and made everyone go gaga over each scene and song with no language barrier at all. The superhit track, Naatu Naatu, which made everyone groove to the beats was awarded with prestigious Oscar under the Best Song category at the 95th Academy Awards. The entire RRR team, including winners MM Keervani and Chandra Bose, director Rajamouli, and leading men Ram Charan and Jr NTR had a blast, attending the Academy Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles. Recently, Ram made his first media appearance after the awards and during the interaction he hinted about his Hollywood debut.

    During a media interaction, Ram Charan was asked about his international debut. However, the actor denied from spilling the details but he hinted on signing something. He was quoted saying ‘I don’t know sir. I would leave it in LA where I said that. We’re working on it. But, it’s too early to say. Everything is a process. Let it happen. It will happen. My mom says nazar nahi lagna chahiye. Everyone wishes to work in an industry where talent is appreciated.’ Well, we just can’t wait to see him making his debut in the west.

    Ram Charan’s work

    Ram is currently busy with the final stage shooting of his upcoming film RC15. The project is reportedly slated to hit the theatres in January 2024.  It will feature Kiara Advani as the female lead. He recently wrapped up a key schedule in Kurnool. If the reports are to be believed, he is also making a comeback to Bollywood with a special appearance in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, the upcoming Salman Khan starrer.

Priyanka Chopra, who has been cheering for RRR and this song since the beginning took to her Instagram to share a video of the special performance and we cannot stop getting excited.

Sharing this clip, we can hear PeeCee cheering in the background and she wrote, ‘Wohooo!!! Amazing! #RRR #standingovation.” This performance was special also for the fact that to announce it we had the gorgeous Deepika Padukone taking over the Oscars stage.

The film in its initial run, ended as the fourth highest grossing Indian film worldwide, behind Dangal, Baahubali 2 and KGF: Chapter 2. The second phase release of RRR ensured that it took the third spot in the list of highest grossing Indian films worldwide, eclipsing KGF: Chapter 2 due to a very strong performance in Japan, where it is already the number one Indian film.

For RRR to better its first day takings is surely a historic feat. RRR of course had higher average ticket prices that did the trick for it. But again, it wasn’t a franchise film like Baahubali 2 and a franchise film gets the benefit of a ready audience which is not a case with newly created IPs. The worldwide opening day record of RRR has not been crossed by any other Indian film yet.

     

    RRR Emerged As The Film To Collect Highest Theatrical Shares In Telugu States

    RRR also became the film with the highest theatrical share in Telugu states, beating Baahubali 2. The total share from the two states alone is around Rs 240 crores and that is staggering. In the list of highest theatrical share in India for a single language, RRR was placed second, only behind the Hindi share of Baahubali 2. Now it is third, behind Pathaan and Baahubali 2. Talking about the highest share in India for the original language, RRR was number one, before being dethroned by Pathaan.

     

    RRR Recorded The Highest First Day Collections For An Indian Film Internationally

    RRR registered the highest opening day for an Indian film internationally. The film, on its opening day, collected Rs 67 crores internationally, which is still the highest among Indian films. Of that, Rs. 42 crores came from USA alone. To beat the opening day collections of RRR in USA will take some time and effort and most probably, only an S.S Rajamouli movie will be able to dethrone RRR from its top spot. 

     

    RRR Is On Course To Become The Third Indian Film To Surpass Rs 1200 Crores Worldwide

    RRR’s worldwide gross collections are a whisker away from Rs 1200 crores, a number achieved by only two films in the past, Baahubali 2 and Dangal.

    SS Rajamouli Has Become The Most Celebrated Indian Director

    Coming to personal records, S.S. Rajamouli is the only Indian director to give two back to back Rs 1000 crore worldwide grossers. He’s the highest grossing Indian director and also the director to secure the highest theatrical share. His next film is with Mahesh Babu and it is said to be a globe-trotting adventure film. The film is keenly awaited and is sure to set benchmarks whenever it releases. 

     

    RRR Also Broke Streaming Records

    RRR did not just do well in theatres but did exceedingly well digitally too. The Hindi version of the film stayed in Netflix’s top 10 list for a record 16 weeks and one can’t rule out the possibility of it breaking into the list for the 17th and 18th time. 16 weeks in top 10 has made it the only non-English film to achieve that feat, on this streaming platform. Different versions of the film have been streaming on other platforms and it is needless to say that they are setting benchmarks on the streaming front as well.
