Hi, I’m Joachim Ronning. I’m the director of “Tron: Ares.” So this is the scene where Julian Dillinger has discovered that Eve is in possession of the permanence code. So he’s sending his two top programs after her, Ares and Athena. And we get to see them on the light cycles. And Ares obviously being played by Jared Leto, Athena being played by Jodie Turner-Smith and Eve being played by Greta Lee. I put so much pressure on myself and everybody to get this right, this sequence, because it’s such an iconic part of the Tron universe, the light cycle chase, and light cycles. And we spent a year designing this. And here, the police car, obviously, this is the first time we’re going to see the famous Tron light wall in the real world. And boom. We shot this in Vancouver over six weeks of nights. And luckily, Vancouver is a very film friendly city, so we were able to close down the bridge and really, really do this. And then we finally found together with Darren Gilford, the production designer, and we found a look for the light cycles and together with the suits and I’m really happy with them. This is the Akira slide by the way, which is super important for me to get in there. And I remember reading the script three years ago and thinking like, how can we be worthy of a next Tron chapter. And I think I got to page 30 or something like that. And, and I saw the digital assets coming into the real world and the light cycles coming out and creating havoc on the streets. And I felt like as a fan, as a filmmaker, that’s something I really wanted to see. So here we are getting into the parkade, and this is like, I wanted to have a sequence in the middle of this big chase that we just stopped down and we brought it all down and it became more a psychological thriller sequence. “Come on.” With Eve hiding and wondering what the hell is going on here and being resourceful, she ghost rides her Ducati and takes down Athena. And Athena Boom. Falling through the air here. That’s a real stunt woman doing that. And obviously this is in March in Vancouver. So it’s like everybody’s really cold. And it’s not easy. And we did it over so many nights. And you get that 1,000 yard stare after a while. But I’m really happy we did it. I think the audience can feel that this is real. It’s in camera. We built the light cycles, and we’re coming up to this moment now where Eve is about to make a decision and get on one. So I think the big advantages of building these assets the light cycle, we built a couple of them. What that meant was that we were able to put the camera on the light cycles with the actors. Here’s Athena coming T-1000 style, running for her. And here we go. I think this is kind of like a wish fulfillment for a lot of fans, to be able to drive the light cycle in the real world. And it sure is for me. And it was so amazing to be able to do this. And I think when you make these big movies, you have the resources to get it. And here’s Greta Lee escaping Jodie Turner-Smith or Athena actually running behind her. And you get all these things in the same shot. And both Jodie and Greta did so much running on this movie. And obviously Jodie is in that suit. So I was just so amazed by these, the physicalities that these actors went through.
The official Star Wars site just posted a beautiful new video of Stenberg, who stars in the upcoming The Acolyte, playing the violin, something they’ve been doing since childhood. But what’s special about this video though is that John Williams himself not only approved Stenberg to play the piece, he also wrote them a specific new version optimized for solo violin. Which basically means you’ve heard the Star Wars theme a billion times, but never quite like this. Check it out.
The Acolyte | Amandla & Her Violin | Streaming June 4 on Disney+
Well, that was amazing. And we’re hoping Stenberg is equally as amazing as Mae, their character on The Acolyte which is coming sooner than you think on June 4. Mae is described by the official Star Wars site as someone who “gets swept up into a sinister mystery—one that puts her into the center of a conflict in unexpected ways.” We imagine that will be expanded out mightily in the coming months.
As for Williams, as far as we know, his music isn’t in The Acolyte (the composer for the show is Get Out’s Michael Abels), but hopefully, we get a theme here and there. The show, which co-stars Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss, premieres with two episodes on June 4. Are you as excited as we are?
“Sometimes things we really want to work just don’t end up working. And that’s OK,” she told The Times UK. “The most important thing is that you choose what’s healthiest for you and your family and definitely your children.”
“There are so many different moments in our life where we look at ourselves and say, ‘Who am I and am I being true to that?’ If the answer is no, then you have to make a move because I believe that there are visible scars from staying in places that are not good for us. And they don’t just affect us, they affect everybody around us.”
“I don’t think it’s a failure,” she said of her marriage. “We obviously had such a beautiful moment together. And now it’s time for a new moment for both of us. And how exciting.”
According to TMZ, the divorce papers listed “irreconcilable differences” as a cause for the divorce. Celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser is representing Smith in the divorce, with the actress asking for joint custody of their daughter. The date of separation is listed as September 17, 2023.
Turner-Smith proposed to the Cruel Intentions star during a New Year’s Eve vacation to Nicaragua. “I don’t know if she planned it or if it was a spur-of-the-moment thing, but out popped a proposal I was not expecting and the organic and instinctive answer was yes,” Jackson said to The Times.
“Six months [after the proposal], she was pregnant and we were on our way. And now we have this beautiful baby who is literally the manifestation of that love,” Jackson added. “It is impossible for me to look into the face of my child without feeling love for my wife.”
Jackson was hesitant to get married in the first place. ”Partially, it’s age,” Jackson explained. “I’m old enough to be able to do this. Partially it’s about finding somebody in the right moment of life.”He admitted, “If we had met five years earlier we probably would have had a torrid affair, but all the rest of this stuff, I was just not ready. I didn’t think I ever wanted to get married.”
As for Turner-Smith, she decided to keep everything a secret from the public for a reason. “Everything happened at the same time for me,” she explains to People about her romance with the Dawson’s Creek actor. “It was like, I fell in love right before I started this movie that would basically change my life, and then by the time I was putting this movie out I was pregnant, I was secretly married and I was trying to have one moment and not let the other moment overshadow it, which is why I tried to keep it secret.”
Then, says Turner-Smith, “The whole world stopped and there was a global pandemic and I got to slow down with this precious child of mine.”
The actress spoke about the split in a new interview with The Times, saying that she’s trying to think about her divorce in as positive a light as possible.
“Sometimes things we really want to work just don’t end up working. And that’s OK,” Turner-Smith said. “The most important thing is that you choose what’s healthiest for you and your family and definitely your children.”
When speaking about how to tell if a relationship–or any situation in life–is right for you, the Queen & Slim star advised people to look at specific moments in their lives and question if they’re being true to themselves.
“If the answer is no, then you have to make a move because I believe that there are visible scars from staying in places that are not good for us,” she insisted.
The actress and model went on to explain why she doesn’t think her marriage was a failure, despite ending in divorce.
“We obviously had such a beautiful moment together,” she said of her relationship with Jackson. “And now it’s time for a new moment for both of us. And how exciting!”
Turner-Smith breaking her silence comes as Jackson explores his new relationship with Lupita Nyong’o.
She hinted at their union during a recent interview with Porter, insisting she won’t be going public with another relationship any time soon.
When asked about her history of keeping her love life private, Nyong’o said, “And that was very, very sage of me. I’m going back to those days, by the way.”
Regardless of her desire to keep things under wraps, she and Jackson made their relationship very clear when they were spotted packing on the PDA after sources confirmed to DailyMailthat they are dating.
The pair was first spotted together in Oct. 2023, when they attended a Janelle Monáe concert in Los Angeles. Turner-Smith filed for divorce earlier that month.
Jodie Turner-Smith’s divorce from Dawson’s Creek star Joshua Jackson may have been caused by “dark moods” from the intense characters the actor portrayed.
Radar Online reports that the 37-year-old’s divorce filing from Jackson left the actor devastated. A supposed pal of Jackson said the thespian’s inability to leave work on set caused problems between him and the Queen and Slim starlet.

The insider claimed that his roles on Fringe and The Affair, “made Joshua prone to “dark moods” and Jodie believed their marriage turned “unhealthy.”
They said fans may think Jodie and Josh are “the perfect match” but arguments over little things can “escalate into full-blown rows.”
It was clear “the dynamic between them had changed”, the source continued.
In public, things may have appeared to be okay but behind closed doors, things were “definitely rocky” alleged the source. The actress-model requested the court to grant the pair joint custody of their 3-year-old daughter, Juno Rose Diana Jackson.
Radar Online reported the chatterboxes from their inner circle described the Brit as a “social butterfly”y while Jackson was more introverted. Some fans say “his friends” have become loquacious to help the “One Week” actor save face, after he was spotted with newly single Lupita Nyong’o. The Black Panther star found herself in hot water when fans assumed she was still going strong with host, Sal Masekela and may have been the reason for the demise of Joshua’s marriage.
As previously reported, Lupita took to Instagram to announce the sports commentator was no longer her man, her man, her man.
Although the Us star cleared up the status of her relationship with Sal, she never addressed if she and the Pacey Witter-portraying actor were an item.
Usher Facilitated Jodi & Josh’s Coupledom?
Jodie first crossed paths with Jackson at R&B legend, Usher’s, 2018 birthday bash.
“When I first met my husband, we had a one-night stand,” Turner-Smith revealed in 2021 on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “We’re in a two, three-year one-night stand now.”
Jodie wasted no time asking the Canadian actor to join her as a lifemate while they were celebrating New Year’s Eve in Nicaragua.
“She was quite adamant and she was right, this is the best decision I ever made,” said Jackson while taking off his ring and holding it up to show off to Fallon and the audience.
Less than a year after meeting, the two copped a marriage license in Beverly Hills and exchanged vows on August 18, 2019.
As in many marriages, however, things eventually took a turn. PEOPLE recently reported that the elegant actress concluded that their union could not be saved.
“They are on very different paths in life,” a tipster shared.
The marriage “made her unhappy” and she’s choosing to focus on motherhood. “Jodie loves being a mom. She also loves working” and the former happy couple will “co-parent their daughter” as “they want her to continue to thrive.”
The estranged exes were most recently spotted celebrating Jodie’s 37th birthday in New York City last month.
Wishing both the best as they take their separate journeys — we know Joshua will likely grab something foreign and chocolate along the way.

Social media is buzzing over Lupita Nyong’o announcing her split with Selema Masekela amid “recent deception” that she experienced in the relationship.
On Thursday, the Oscar-winning actress, 40, revealed that she’s heartbroken while acknowledging that “there are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering,” seemingly in reference to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
In a rare invitation into her private life, the globally-adored star detailed her breakup with Masekela, 52, noting that she wants to publicly dissociate herself from him because he’s broken her trust.
“At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust,” she wrote. “I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.”
She went on to share that she’s heartbroken but is “choosing to face the pain” and encouraged her followers not to run from their hurt.
“I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, ‘Whatever, my life is better this way.’
“But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love. And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass. […] Let’s face our pain so we don’t spread it.”
Naturally, social media exploded with ruthless barbs aimed at Masekela who somehow hurt the most unproblematic person in Hollywood.
Not the haggard looking man w/ child bearing hips cheated on Lupita Nyong’o?! Audacity is just running rampant! pic.twitter.com/WPiR6Suwqi
The Wakanda Forever star first went public with Hugh Masekela‘s son in December of last year after fans pointed out her “chemistry” with her co-star Tenoch Huerta.
“We just click!” she captioned a since-deleted video of herself and Masekela in color-coordinated outfits. “@selema #thisismylove #nuffsaid,” she added.
Lupita Nyong’o’s breakup post comes after she was spotted with Joshua Jackson causing fans to speculate about a possible romance between the two.
What type of “deception” do you think happened in the relationship? Tell us down below and peep the social media hysteria over the unexpected split on the flip.
Lupita Nyong’o is a single woman! At least, that’s what a recent Instagram upload on Thursday (Oct. 18) seemingly implies. The actress previously shared her romance with Selema Masekela.
“There are much important things on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering. At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust. I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception,” Lupita wrote in the Instagram caption and carousel post slides.
Lupita offered no additional details about the alleged “deception” or clarity on how long ago she split from Selema — whom she did not name in the upload. The last Instagram upload she shared featuring Selema came in August. It was a birthday post calling him a “sunshine human” and her “amor,” per E! News. It has since been deleted, and the pair do not follow each other on Instagram.
Lupita Nyong’o & Joshua Jackson Enjoy Janelle Monáe Concert With Friends
The Shade Room first noted that the former couple were not connected on the social platform after publishing exclusive images of Lupita Nyong’o. Photographers captured her enjoying the closing show of Janelle Monáe’s tour on Wednesday night.
A source told TSR Lupita reportedly arrived at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, with Joshua Jackson and remained at his side for the entire performance. Over 30 images reviewed by TSR staff show Lupita and Joshua engaging in friendly conversation with each other and friends. None show signs of romantic intimacy, including kissing, hugging, hand-holding, or anything related.
Like Lupita, Joshua is also newly single after his wife of four years, Jodie Turner-Smith, filed for divorce earlier this month. She listed their date of separation as Sept. 13, 2023. The paperwork reportedly revealed that she’s seeking joint physical and legal custody of their three-year-old daughter, Juno.
Lupita “Tempted To Run Into The Shadows” Amid Her Heartbreak
In today’s Instagram upload, the actress spoke about wanting to hide from public life amid her breakup.
“I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, ‘Whatever, my life is better this way.’ But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love, Lupita Nyong’o wrote.
In her continued paragraph, Lupita said she chose to share in order to be honest with herself and to inspire others experiencing heartbreak.
“And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass. The promise, they say, is that a tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness. I hope it’s true… I share this to keep it [100], and hoping that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it. #Breakup Let’s face our pain so we don’t spread it.”
Turner-Smith, 37, on Monday submitted divorce papers in the Los Angeles Superior Court to end her marriage with the 45-year-old Dawson’s Creek actor.
In her filing, Turner-Smith cited “irreconcilable differences” as reason for the divorce, according to Entertainment Tonight.
Court papers indicate Jackson and Turner-Smith have been separated since Sept. 13, 2023. Neither actor has commented publicly on the divorce.
Jackson and the Queen & Slim star met in 2018 and tied the knot shortly afterward, when they obtained a marriage licence in August 2019. The couple did not have an official wedding until December 2019.
Joshua Jackson on his ‘Dr. Death’ role, and how it messed with his psyche
A year later in April 2020, the couple welcomed their first child, now three-year-old daughter Juno Rose Diana Jackson.

In her divorce filing, Turner-Smith requested joint custody of their daughter. She also requested Jackson pay for her lawyer’s fees, and no alimony payments.
In a May 2021 interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Turner-Smith said she and Jackson had never expected their relationship to be serious or long-lasting. Turner-Smith quipped that she and Jackson had a one-night stand that evolved into a “three-year one-night stand.”
Jackson told Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen in May 2023 that Turner-Smith was “the one” the first time he saw her enter a room.
Both Jackson and Turner-Smith have had successful careers in the entertainment world.
Turner-Smith, a British model and actor, is best known for her starring roles in the films After Yang, Queen & Slim and the AMC miniseries Anne Boleyn.
Jackson, who was born in Vancouver, B.C., is most recognizable for playing Pacey Witter in Dawson’s Creek and Peter Bishop in Fringe. More recently, Jackson has starred in the TV series Fatal Attraction, Dr. Death and The Affair.

Jodie Turner-Smith is a gift to us all — just check out her latest look for all the proof you need. On Sept. 14, the model and actor strolled up to Vogue World in London wearing a black thong bodysuit adorned with an enormous satin bow that couldn’t be missed. The giant adornment extended from her right shoulder down to encircle her left elbow and incorporated a large side cutout. The leg-baring number hails from Viktor & Rolf’s fall 2023 haute couture collection, which debuted on the runway in Paris two months ago.
Working with styling duo Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, Turner-Smith amped up the glamour by accessorizing with black elbow-length opera gloves and diamond and sapphire jewelry. She finished the look with platform heels and rhinestone eye makeup for an additional touch of sparkle.
Bannerman and McDonald previously spoke to POPSUGAR about styling Turner-Smith for the 2022 Met Gala, where she wore a crystal-dripping Gucci dress with a pink chiffon skirt. “We [work with] women from different backgrounds, different cultures [to] show the world how they can be represented and how they too can feel beautiful, have opulence, have drama, have an elegance,” Bannerman shared, essentially listing off every word that comes to mind when Turner-Smith hits the red carpet.
Turner-Smith was in stylish company at the Vogue World event, which kicked off London Fashion Week. Sienna Miller, who’s currently expecting her second child, bared her baby bump in a voluminous two-piece Schiaparelli set reminiscent of a stylish loofah. Winnie Harlow also brought the drama in Zuhair Murad couture, Dove Cameron looked “Renaissance” World Tour ready in an all-silver Coach ensemble, and Simone Ashley proved the naked-dress trend is still going strong in Tamara Ralph couture. Other standout attendees included Gemma Chan, Nicola Coughlan, Ncuti Gatwa, Emilia Clarke, and Yasmin Finney.
Read ahead for an all-angles look at Turner-Smith’s latest head-turning outfit.
The patriarchy doesn’t pause for movie stars, and Jodie Turner-Smith knows it.
The actress is a face of Gucci’s Chime for Change initiative for global gender equality, and for her—like most of us—the subject is painfully personal. “I think when you’re a girl on the playground, it’s pretty obvious that you’re treated differently from the moment you enter society,” she says. “But then, as an adult, you really see the madness of it…like, how are we still getting less money and respect for more work?! I’m determined to help stop that cycle before my daughter has to face it.”
Turner-Smith may be a singular force, but she isn’t alone when it comes to speaking out. This year’s Chime for Change campaign includes a new video series with Salma Hayek Pinault, Serena Williams, The Julias (Roberts and Garner), and longtime Gucci face Florence Welch, all discussing the very real need for continued gender equity. The IMDb VIPs are joined by activists like Amanda Nguyen and Diandra Marizet Esparza, and—because this is Gucci, after all—comes with some cute and cool memes to plaster across one’s social feed of choice.

Still, it’s undeniable that Turner-Smith is a highlight of the campaign. Maybe it’s the way she speaks softly but carries a big look—a sequin tiger-print jacket, gold collar chain, and a black straw pillbox hat that’s half Jackie O. and half military general. Maybe it’s because she acknowledges that “men and women are different” with a smile that implies she finds “guy stuff” a bit boring. Or maybe it’s simply that Turner-Smith is a fast-rising talent who’s married to our middle school crush (sorry Dawson, Pacey Witter forever) and we still don’t know a ton about her.
ELLE.com sat down with the British red carpet slayer to help change that with a few key questions…and a minor debate about boobs, because: fashion.
Gender equality is a universal issue, but it’s also a personal one. When did it become something you wanted to fight for?
I’m an ’80s baby, and seeing the way boys and girls were treated differently—especially as a little Black girl—that began pretty early on. For me, one of the things that always made me really burn was that seemingly “normal” idea that, “Oh, if a boy is bullying you, it’s because he likes you.” Really?! To be treated badly isn’t a compliment. It’s not a mark of desire. And now I think I’m learning this again because, as a parent, I’m sharing stories with my daughter. You know, she loves stories, and she loves Disney. But you’re watching Sleeping Beauty as an adult, and they talk about how Aurora is betrothed to be married at 16. And I’m watching this going, “Sorry, wait, what are you talking about?! That’s child marriage!” We just saw The Little Mermaid,so some of that came up again.
Did you have a talk with your daughter about how you don’t give up your voice for a boy?
Oh, there’s a lot of different things I would say! I love that in this retelling, Ariel’s a bit older—she’s not this clueless teenager. And Triton even says to Ariel, “You shouldn’t have to give up your voice in order to be heard.” It definitely feels less bleak and a lot more empowering. But yeah, I’m definitely always sneaking in little lessons to my daughter when I hear her listening to stories that are a little bit backwards.
Star Wars is veiled in secrecy, but can you tell us anything about the new Acolyte show, and how female roles are explored there?
I think that we had a unique opportunity with having such an amazing powerful woman as a showrunner, Leslye Headland. And because of that, I feel like the older female characters in this [Star Wars] universe really treated us like thoughtful, strong, empowered, and complicated women, which felt amazing. There’s such a range that we don’t always get, and it’s a bit part of this world!
According to your Wikipedia, you initially wanted to write movies. Is that true?
No way, something is right on my Wikipedia? That’s great. There’s been a lot of shit on there that’s just not real.
So you do want to write in the future?
Yeah! I don’t think I ever really stopped writing. It’s always been something that’s in my heart. And I feel like, you know, at my essence, I am figuring out all the ways in which I want to express myself as an artist, because I truly do love making art. When Gucci let me write and direct a short film with Dazed, Jackie, it really solidified it. By working as an actress, I’ve been basically putting myself through [film] school, just trying to learn from all the amazing and talented writers that I’ve had the chance to meet and work with, and directors…eventually, there’s definitely going to be something that comes out of that experience.
You’ve also starred in music videos for MGMT, Rita Ora, and Zayn. Did you learn anything from being on set with rock stars?
Yeah, that music videos are very hard! [Laughs.] They’re insanely long days. But because you’re up-close with the directors, again, there’s just a little tiny bit more room to observe everything that’s going on. Sometimes, the best way to succeed is to be willing to learn just by being there.
I heard you were the most fun person at the Met Gala this year.
Okay, yes, fair.
Going to a big party like that—or any party, really—can sometimes be a bit anxiety-inducing. What’s your best advice for using fashion to get motivated?
Oh, if you don’t want to go to a party, you should definitely wear something that’s black and flowy and shit. Because you know what makes everyone happy, including myself? Nipples. You know what is always going to make you feel better? Freeing the nipples, when in doubt.
What if you’re shy?
The thing is, if I’m feeling sad or like depressed, that’s when I put on an amazing outfit. That’s something that I really got from my mother, which is like, “If your spirit is feeling low, then you can reverse-engineer feeling good inside by making your outside feel great.” I mean, if you can look in the mirror and say, “I’m pretty as hell,” as Megan Thee Stallion says, then that’s amazing. Most of my outfits are all about finding ways that clothes can energize you. And when you feel low, one of the best colors to wear is pink. It’s scientifically proven that pink can put you in a better mood.
Would you like to correct any lies about you on Wikipedia?
Well, if my Wikipedia still says that my daughter’s name is Janie? Fucking get that out of here. I’ve been screaming about it for three years now. Please.
So your family is not Joshua, Jodie, and Janie.
Noooo. [Laughs.] I really like that people don’t know what her name is, because that belongs to her. But I was absolutely incensed when it was reported, as fact, that her name is Janie. No offense to anyone named Janie; that’s great, that’s lovely. It’s just not what we would name our daughter! It’s not Janie!

“Her beauty and her brain go not together.” —William Shakespeare
It’s the usual “rule” that a sequel is required to be spectacularly inferior to its original. But Murder Mystery 2 seemed to take that unspoken edict way too much into consideration during the “writing” of the script. Then again, was it really “written”? For there are far too many moments throughout the “narrative” when one tends to wonder if the script was “generated” by ChatGPT…but that might actually be insulting to ChatGPT. However, no, the film is attributed to Vanderbilt family progeny James Vanderbilt, who once again recently made a name for himself separate from New York wealth by co-writing the scripts for Scream (2022) and Scream VI. Both being far cries from the timbre of Murder Mystery (which he also wrote), and even further still from Murder Mystery 2, which manages to prove that most sequels exist solely to rest on the laurels of their original films.
As such, there is little need to “try.” Everyone here is clearly involved for the paycheck. Hence, a total lack of cohesion and plausibility to anything about this narrative, which begins in Nick (Adam Sandler) and Audrey Spitz’s (Jennifer Anistone) apartment after an overly heavy-handed recap about what happened in the first installment, in addition to telling us what the duo is up to now: sinking all of their savings into a fledgling detective business still coasting off the reputation of their one big case from 2019. Resultantly, they get stuck with less “glamorous” jobs that require using Audrey as bait to lure potentially philandering husbands into being photographed with her. This, of course, glossing over the fact that cheating is no longer the scandal that it once was (even to vanilla straights) and that someone like Audrey isn’t exactly the average man’s “first choice” for an affair. A fact made clear by the husband in question, “Silverfox” (Tony Goldwyn), walking into his living room to find the Spitzes telling “Mrs. Silverfox” (Annie Mumolo) that he has been “stepping out,” only for Silverfox to rebuff this claim by announcing that he’s been going out alone to plan a surprise anniversary party and that Audrey was the one hitting on him. The former excuse makes no sense whatsoever (why go to a bar by yourself to plan a surprise party?), but it’s just the tip of the iceberg apropos of nonsensical goings-on, with the assumption perhaps being that “movies like these” aren’t about making sense, they’re about “having fun.” But a movie is a movie regardless of genre, and should still adhere to certain, let us say, “tenets.”
Murder Mystery 2 feels little obligation to do any such thing, starting with Vikram “The Maharajah” Govindan (Adeel Akhtar) calling up Nick while riding a jet ski (because rich people are just so craaaaazzzzzyyy like that) to invite him to his wedding. This invitation, naturally, is timed to coincide with their squabbles about work, including Nick’s argument with Audrey regarding their marketing approach (Nick nominates the “disruptive marketing” style of having floss business cards [“First Floss, Then Spitz”], while Audrey thinks it’s ridiculous). What it all boils down to for Nick is: “Do you know any couples who also work together that actually get along?” Audrey replies (with one of the few comedy gold lines of the movie), “Billie Eilish and Finneas.” A riff on the duo’s incestuous dynamic, Nick has to remind, “They’re brother and sister.” Luckily for both, the argument is interrupted by this call. The one that ultimately leads to being a showcase for Hawaii, as Vik’s “private island” is actually Lanikuhonua Lagoon in Oahu (something Mike White should have thought about for season one of The White Lotus). Either way, it’s where his wedding to Claudette (Mélanie Laurent, who is acting in a role and movie that’s way beneath her) takes place.
This location, however, becomes overwrought, especially since the movie’s marketing is contingent upon the alleged bulk of it occurring in Paris (thus the maddening tagline: “Deux or Die”). But no, it takes us almost thirty-six minutes to leave the island, well above the standard “end of act one” practice. And, being that Murder Mystery 2 clocks in at approximately one hour and thirty minutes (which still feels too long), it was theoretically all set up to follow a very conventional three-act structure that manages to get biffed in manifold ways by the end. Manifest in a never-ending denouement that keeps piling on non sequitur “conclusions” for the sake of it. Seemingly under the pretense of being “comical.” But just because one piles on a slew of random occurrences doesn’t make the outcome automatically funny, so much as a poor writing choice. Or, to quote Connor Miller (Mark Strong, also out of place in this movie), “There really is no end to your bad decision-making, is there?”
Incidentally, Jennifer Aniston recently remarked of her golden ticket to being an icon, Friends, “There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of Friends and find them offensive.” To be real, there were many people who didn’t find Friends funny when it was actually on the air either, but anyway… The point is that perhaps with this mentality in mind, Aniston is glomming onto projects that are the “lowest common denominator” of comedy for a reason. And yes, like Sandler, she’s long been known to do that (see: Horrible Bosses, Wanderlust, We’re the Millers, Mother’s Day, et al.), but, speaking to her own comment, it’s as though these lowest common denominator comedies have gotten even lower as a result of what she mentioned about the risk of offending people. Nonetheless, there was plenty of room left to ream the French as the “unexpected” villain of the story remarked of his plan to blow up the Eiffel Tower: “There’s only one thing I hate more than witnesses, and that’s the French.”
The French, to be sure, are among the few “sects,” for Americans in particular, that remain “fair game” for evisceration on the “comedy” front. This also extends to fellow Europeans the Italians, who are generally mocked at every turn for their supposed manner and supposed accent (which Americans still portray as having a superfluous “a” inserted in between every word, as in: “It’s-a me, Mario”). With this in mind, Aniston lamented that it’s “really hard for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life.” But no, most of the making fun of in the U.S. that went on in the past was never self-directed. It was never about the sham of American life or the uncouthness of Americans, so much as a bid to help solidify the othering of those who were marginalized already (on Friends, that was done amply to the LGBTQIA+ community). This is the real reason white comedians are “on edge” about comedy “changing”—i.e., becoming less bigoted. This despite Aniston saying that presenting bigotry in comedy is ultimately a way to “joke about a bigot and have a laugh.” In one sense, yes. In another, such thinking underestimates how fucking literal people are, and that they might use such “comedy” to justify their own legitimate bigotry. So now we’re saddled with “straightforward” (read: stupid) comedy such as Murder Mystery 2, which somehow manages to be so bad that it insults its predecessor.
But lack of laughs or decent Parisian representation (that’s kind of Netflix’s thing now, what with Emily in Paris as one of its “tent-pole” shows) won’t stop this gravy train from being a success as Aniston insists, “Everybody needs funny! The world needs humor! [though that’s not what Murder Mystery 2 is]. We can’t take ourselves too seriously. Especially in the United States. Everyone is far too divided.” Alas, the division in this scenario will stem from those with a brain trying to watch a laughless (and sexless, for that matter) “romp” wherein “style” outweighs all trace of substance and those whose brains have been murdered already as this movie seeks to be an amalgam of everything from Legally Blonde (with the perm “revelation” being likenable to the henna one in Murder Mystery 2) to Shotgun Wedding to Glass Onion. Doing its best, as it were, to tick everyone’s box, thereby ticking no one’s.
A mere 24 hours after dazzling in Rodarte tulle at the British Independent Film Awards, Florence Pugh was back on the red carpet — yet she struck a different sartorial chord at the 2022 Fashion Awards in London, where she accompanied Pierpaolo Piccioli in a minimal open-back Valentino ballgown in a stunning shade of crimson. She was one of the stand-outs at the event, which celebrates the best of the British fashion industry.
