  • ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Levels Up With a Super Bowl Spot

    [ad_1]

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie promotion continues with a Super Bowl ad reminding everyone it’s just months away and going to hit big when it comes. How big are we talking? If this teaser and the first trailer are any indication, Nintendo and Illumination are thinking as big as the universe.

After showing off Yoshi in the last trailer, we got a short tease that puts a spotlight on the film’s action and new worlds. The first is a riff on the T-Rex moment from Super Mario Odyssey, with Yoshi and Toad trying to protect baby versions of Luigi and Mario from a massive dino. But Universal also released a broader advert over the weekend that gives us a bit more.

Like the ad says, there’s a big galaxy out there, and if you thought the last movie was good-looking, Illumination’s really upped their game for the sequel. We’ve previously seen the film’s version of the Sand Kingdom (from Super Mario Odyssey), where Mario and Luigi find Luigi. This new spot gives us another new location in a massive cyberpunk city Peach and Toad visited that also includes a bar full of classic Mario enemies.

Finally, we get a look at Yoshi doing what he’s best known for: swallowing enemies and spitting them out as eggs. Seeing it in movie form is kind of gross and funny, and your kids are sure to love it when The Super Mario Galaxy movie hits theaters on Wednesday, April 1.

  • A New ‘Super Mario Galaxy’ Trailer Unleashes Yoshi

    [ad_1]

With just a few months left before Super Mario Galaxy comes out, Nintendo held another Direct to reveal new information about the film, and show off a trailer.

Picking up after the first one, Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) have settled nicely into being the protectors of the Mushroom Kingdom. But when Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie) comes looking to spring his dad (Jack Black) out of tiny prison, the brothers have to travel the cosmos to stop them. Along with a returning Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), they’ve a new ally in Brie Larson’s Rosalina, another princess who lives in outer space and raises the Lumas.

But this new trailer is actually about Yoshi, and highlights how he’ll fit in with the brothers and Toad. He’s not the only dinosaur that’ll be showing up: there’s a brief tease of Birdo and a T.Rex that longtime Mario fans will remember from 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey. During the stream, Shigeru Miyamoto teased that Yoshi and other “many familiar characters…will play active roles” in the film, so that’s something to look forward to. Well, that and the new merch that’ll be made for each of them.

Super Mario Galaxy arrives in theaters on April 1.

  • New Super Mario Bros. Movie Release Date Announced

New Super Mario Bros. Movie Release Date Announced

    [ad_1]

A new film set in The Super Mario Bros. Movie universe has been announced. Described as “a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.,” it is unclear if it will be a direct sequel or a spin-off of the highly successful 2023 movie starring Chris Pratt and Jack Black. However, we do know it will be released on April 3, 2026, and that Illumination is once again the studio behind the animation. The end credits of the 2023 film teased Yoshi, so that could be the direction it is going.

“We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026, in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories,” said Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto on Twitter. “We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it”

The first film featured the voices of its all-star cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Despite receiving mixed reception from critics, the adaptation still became one of the year’s biggest movie releases. It was one of the top releases of 2023, with a worldwide gross of over $1.3 billion at the box office.

“While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario and brother Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world,” reads the first film’s synopsis. “But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi. With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach, Mario taps into his own power.”

‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Breaks $1 Billion at the Box Office

    [ad_1]

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially earned more than $1 billion dollars globally. Not only does that make it the highest-grossing video game movie ever released, it’s also the first movie of 2023 to make more than $1 billion. It also holds a distinguished spot among four others that have managed to make that much post-Covid. Those movies were Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, and Avatar: The Way of Water.

Luckily, the modern appearance of the Mario Brothers fared much better than the trainwreck that was 1993’s Super Mario Bros. The 2023 film follows what one would expect out of a Mario movie. It’s the tale of two plumbers who become trapped in the Mushroom Kingdom. For Mario to rescue Luigi and escape that other world, he’ll have to defeat King Bowser.

The 1993 film was a mess all over. The production was notoriously plagued by personnel changes, and tonally, nobody had any clue what they were doing. Nintendo also gave the production complete creative license to do whatever they wanted. One of the producers, Roland Joffe, decided that the Mario concept was so well established that they could experiment with the movie to no end. It ended up being a cyberpunk nightmare with very little in common with the source material at all.

The 2023 film didn’t get the most stellar critical reception ever, but it did well enough for itself critically. It managed to appeal to people of all ages, and was a genuinely fun family movie. It also stuck very closely to the source material. That, it seems, is exactly what its target audience wanted.

    Press Release

    Mar 10, 2023

In celebration of Mario’s leap to the big screen in Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie (in theaters April 5 – tickets are on sale now), Red Wing Shoes brings Mario’s iconic shoes to life in a one-of-a-kind prototype. The only pair created was unveiled at Nintendo New York, Nintendo’s flagship store at Rockefeller Center, in front of a crowd of excited fans on March 10 – also known as MAR10 Day.

Red Wing’s master craftspeople worked with the film’s creative team to translate every on-screen pixel into a real-life stitch. Durable, natural leather and slip-resistant treads prove these are the boots of the super plumber, and mushroom-based, mycelium heel pads provide a welcome power-up to help Mario take on Bowser and his army.

“At Red Wing Shoe Company, we’ve been supplying long-lasting, durable and comfortable footwear that protects trades workers on the job site for 118 years. We were excited to deliver that same ambition and energy to Mario’s Boots as one of the most famous plumbers in the world!” Dave Schneider, CMO, Red Wing Shoes.

  • ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Gets Official MPAA Rating

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Gets Official MPAA Rating

    [ad_1]

Although the film isn’t due in theaters until next spring, the animated movie version of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. already has its official MPAA rating. As of this week, the film is rated PG for “action and mild violence.”

The original live-action Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993 was a pretty strange and dark experience but it was also rated PG, for “sci-fi action, mild language and sensuality.”

No one expected a PG-13 cut of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but the PG rating tells us a little bit about what exactly we can expect. An animated Mario Bros. movie could have been rated G, but that may have been to its detriment from a box office perspective. When you’re trying to make a movie that has intergenerational appeal, it’s important to make sure that the content is engaging for everyone.

    THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE
    Nintendo

Since The Super Mario Bros. Movie is produced by Illumination, the studio behind animated favorites like the Sing or Despicable Me franchises, we can probably expect roughly that level of comedy and that sort of tone; maybe not mature, but still entertaining. The MPAA’s notes about “action” likely refers to fights with high stakes. What’s more striking here is a lack of any designation towards crude humor, meaning the jokes in the movie will likely be pretty tame by modern standards.

The movie’s first teaser debuted a few weeks ago at New York Comic-Con. If you missed it, here it is:

The film’s cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is due for release in theaters on April 7, 2023.
