  • Black Panther Teams With the Fantastic Four in Latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Teaser

    [ad_1]

The Fantastic Four make their introductions with the leaders of Wakanda in the latest teaser trailer for Marvel StudiosAvengers: Doomsday.

Disney is set to release directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo‘s feature theatrically on Dec. 18. The film will include a lengthy list of Marvel superheroes facing off against Doctor Doom, played by returning Marvel Cinematic Universe stalwart Robert Downey Jr.

The movie’s footage was released online Tuesday and features voiceover from Shuri (Letitia Wright), who took up the mantle of Black Panther in 2022’s Wakanda Forever following the death of brother T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman).

“I’ve lost everyone that matters to me,” Wright says in the new trailer. “A king has his duties to prepare our people for the afterlife. I have mine.”

The teaser also shows M’Baku (Winston Duke) introducing himself as the King of Wakanda, after Shuri opted not to challenge him for the throne in Wakanda Forever. That film also included the MCU debut of Namor (Tenoch Huerta), who appears in the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday.

“King M’Baku of Wakanda,” Duke tells Ben Grimm, aka The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). The Fantastic Four member responds, “Ben, Yancy Street between Broome and Grand.”

The rest of the MCU’s Fantastic Four — Mr. Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), the Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby) and the Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) — will also appear in Doomsday after debuting in last summer’s 1960s-set The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

This is the fourth teaser that Marvel has shared online for the forthcoming film. The previous clips focused on scenes with Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the X-Men’s Cyclops (James Marsden).

Marvel Studios revealed an extensive list of castmembers from the film in March during a lengthy livestream. The centerpiece of the project is Downey, who previously starred as the MCU’s Iron Man before the character died in the most recent Avengers movie, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Doomsday will be followed by sequel Avengers: Secret Wars a year later.

  • Chris Evans on Why He Declined Ryan Reynolds’ Cue Cards for His Surprise Monologue in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Chris Evans on Why He Declined Ryan Reynolds’ Cue Cards for His Surprise Monologue in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

    [ad_1]

[This story contained spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine.]

When Ryan Reynolds offered Chris Evans the opportunity to make a surprise cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, he jumped at the chance.

The actor recently opened up to People magazine about getting to reprise his Fantastic Four character Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the record-making Marvel movie, currently playing in theaters.

“It was a couple years ago and I got a text from Ryan, we’re buddies,” Evans recalled. “He just said, ‘Listen, if you don’t like this idea, no worries whatsoever. But I have something that could really bring the house down and would let you play a character from your past.’”

The Ghosted star continued, “I mean, honestly, I would do anything Ryan asked. He gave me a great cameo in Free Guy already, and I just trust him completely. So the chance to be Johnny again, I couldn’t pass up. I loved it. It was fun to shoot, fun to watch, all of it.”

Though Evans is more recognized for his role as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his latest appearance as Johnny Storm came nearly two decades after he first debuted the superhero in 2005’s Fantastic Four. He also starred in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

The Avengers actor also scored a second appearance in the Shawn Levy-directed movie after the credits, which saw Evans giving an expletive-filled monologue. Ahead of filming the Deadpool & Wolverine scene, he said Reynolds actually offered him some additional help, but he declined.

“Ryan was like, ‘Listen, if we need cue cards…’ and I was like, ‘Cue cards? I’m showing up off-book,’” Evans recounted. “I don’t get to say dialogue like this. Trust me. I’m going to enjoy every second of this. Memorized.”

Earlier this week, Evans took to his Instagram Story to show his appreciation for Levy, Reynolds and Hugh Jackman for “letting me be a part of such an incredible movie.” He added in the post, “Playing Johnny again was a dream come true and he’ll always have a special place in my heart.”

  • Marvel’s Fantastic Four Casts Ralph Ineson as Galactus

After some recent casting announcements that came with no details attached (Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich), Marvel’s Phase Six entry Fantastic Four—which already has Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the main heroes, plus Julia Garner as Silver Surfer—has just unveiled a doozy: geek god Ralph Ineson will play the villain Galactus.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, writing that “Ineson is said to be playing Galactus, an intergalactic being who eats the life force of planets. And now he just picked the wrong planet to nosh on.” The Jack Kirby and Stan Lee-created character was last seen on the big screen (sort of) in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer—but fans can hope, especially with Ineson aboard, the new movie will present a much more satisfying take on the character.

Directed by Matt Shakman, and set in the 1960s, Fantastic Four is due to hit theaters July 25, 2025. As for Ineson, his other upcoming genre projects cover some important monster bases: vampire horror Nosferatu, which reunites him with The Witch writer-director Robert Eggers, and Guillermo del Toro’s made-for-Netflix Frankenstein.

  • Joseph Quinn’s Ready to Blaze His Own Trail as the Newest Human Torch

Joseph Quinn’s Ready to Blaze His Own Trail as the Newest Human Torch

    [ad_1]

Even before its casting was officially unveiled, Marvel Studios’ upcoming Fantastic Four movie was always poised to be a big deal. The First Family of Marvel Comics hasn’t had a movie since Fant4stic nearly a decade ago (despite Fox’s best attempts), and we’re also coming up on 20 years since the studios’ previous go with the 2000s movies. Those two films have an interesting place in the superhero movie canon, particularly since their Johnny Storm was Chris Evans, who went on to become Captain America for nearly a decade.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Joseph Quinn was asked about if any previous version of Johnny colored his approach to the character. While he was a fan of Evans’ portrayal back in the day, he’s chiefly concerned with “making it your own [version].” There’s “big boots to fill,” certainly, but he says discussions with director Matt Shakman made clear that this movie won’t be in conversation with earlier versions like the MCU Spider-Man movies are with their cinematic past. “There are aspects of it that are very much a singular thing and its own thing. […] I’m really looking forward to establishing this familial dynamic with [my costars] and with Matt Shakman’s guidance.”

From the stars to Shakman and writers Jeff Kaplan, Ian Springer, and Eric Pearson, everyone involved wants to “get [Fantastic Four] right,” continued Quinn. According to him, this new movie will feel different from earlier Marvel movies in ways he clearly can’t explain. But he was hopeful that the end result will be a movie that both does right by the Four and also converts anyone who’s had understandable burnout on superhero movies in the last few years.

In regards to fatigue, Quinn noted that superhero movies have to put the people before the punches and bombast, nothing it’s why people see these in the first place. That’s something Fantastic Four is aiming to deliver on, and something that sounds like the core ethos of the entire film: “We’re not just in a penny, “ he said, “we’re in for a pound with this one. We’re going to go for it.”

The Fantastic Four comes to theaters on July 25, 2025, but Quinn can be seen next in A Quiet Place: Day One on June 7.

  • ‘Fantastic Four’ Casting Rumors Are Keeping Restless Film Fans Engaged

‘Fantastic Four’ Casting Rumors Are Keeping Restless Film Fans Engaged

    [ad_1]

The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike in which actors lobby for a fair contract with the studios has halted nearly all productions and, per the rules of the strike, prevented any major film deals of any kind from officially being made. Perhaps, then, it’s the snoozy current landscape that’s led to rampant online rumors about the upcoming Fantastic Four cast.

For the last several days, there’s been a deluge of unfounded Fantastic Four frontrunners littering the internet—from The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach to former Doctor Who Matt Smith. Steady speculation that Jack Quaid was in the running to play Johnny Storm/Human Torch even led the actor to set the record straight. “Hello everyone. Nope. Not playing Johnny Storm but hey I’m flattered,” he tweeted on Thursday. “Now that you’re here though, donate to the @sagaftra foundation if you can!” he added along with a link to the donation page.

Yesterday, it was reported that The Crown star Vanessa Kirby and Stranger Things breakout Joseph Quinn had been tapped to play Sue and Johnny Storm, respectively, in Marvel’s Fantastic Four movie, according to sources of entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider. Sue, or The Invisible Woman, was previously played by Kate Mara in 2015’s Fantastic Four and Jessica Alba in the 2005 version, while Michael B. Jordan and Chris Evans played Johnny Storm across those two iterations.

Sneider further reports that Smith was in contention to play Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, a role occupied by Miles Teller in 2015 and Ioan Gruffudd a decade prior, but his sources now “don’t expect that deal to work out.” Director Matt Shakman (WandaVision) and producer Kevin Feige are reportedly “awaiting a new draft of the script” from screenwriter Josh Friedman (Avatar: The Way of Water, at which point they may “reapproach Adam Driver” about the part. (Dev Patel has also been floated as a shortlist possibility, says film reporter Grace Randolph.)

The rumor mill has been less focused on the fourth superhero, Ben Grimm, a.k.a. the Thing. The rock-like character was previously played by Jamie Bell in the 2015 reboot and Michael Chiklis in the 2005 version.

It appears that once every decade, all corners of the film fandom will convene to speculate about a new era of Fantastic Four. Marvel’s take on the superpowered family is currently slated for May 2, 2025 as part of phase six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

  • 8 Magical Graphic Novel Gift Ideas for Any Type of Reader | The Mary Sue

8 Magical Graphic Novel Gift Ideas for Any Type of Reader | The Mary Sue

    [ad_1]

All last month we were putting out holiday gift guides—and now it’s time for some graphic novel gift ideas! This one took me the longest because I take gift-giving (all times of the year) very seriously and love, love graphic novels. Therefore, it is hard to narrow all these suggestions down. Graphic novel memoirs are literally my favorite genre of stories, and if you mix in a little fantasy or horror, I’m sold.

Below are graphic novels that were released in the last year or so and would make great gifts for friends, co-workers, and loved ones. These are mostly for general audiences and adults, but they range in maturity level, so these are organized from the safest for work to the least safe for work.

The Legend of Auntie Po by Shing Yin Khor. Image: Kokila.
    (Kokila)

As a 2021 National Book Award Finalist in the Young People’s Literature category, this isn’t exactly a hidden find. However, that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t make a great gift, especially for those interested in folk tales and American history. This story follows a young girl and her family working at a logging camp in 1880s Nevada as tensions are getting worse for the immigrant community following the Chinese Exclusion Act. One way the main character, Mei, and others process these transitions is by telling stories—like her take on newly forming folk heroes.

Unretouchable by Sofia Szamosi. Image: Graphic Universe.
    (Graphic Universe)

The premise of this story is relatively straightforward: a recent high school grad finds herself in a high-profile fashion magazine internship the summer before she starts college. While it hits the expected beats suggested on the cover regarding body image, social media, and advertising, it doesn’t feel as preachy as it could be. Instead, the story leads with empathy and honesty. It’s also a much needed update on how media-induced body dysmorphia has changed in the last 10 years. This is a great gift for those who shudder when they look at their screen time.

If you want a sneak peek at the comic, check out this interview I did with Szamosi.

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen. Image: Penguin Random House.
    (Penguin Random House)

Inspired by the author’s childhood, The Magic Fish features three overlapping stories that center on identity, family, and magic. In between reading fairy tales together, Tien is struggling to tell his mother that he likes boys, and his mother is grappling with feeling disconnected from her homeland in Vietnam. Between the coloring and creative storytelling, The Magic Fish is easily one of my favorite books I read this year. It’s one of those books I will obnoxiously put in people’s faces because it’s that good. The book is often found in middle-grade parts of stores and libraries, but is great for all ages.

Lore Olympus: Volume One by Rachel Smythe. Image: Random House Worlds
    (Random House Worlds)

This is for that person who loves mythology and love stories. Or, better yet, one of the hundreds of thousands of Rachel Smythe fans enthralled by her retelling of Hades and Persephone. In this version, the young goddess is training on Mount Olympus to be a sacred virgin. However, plans go awry and promises are at risk of being severed once she meets the King of the Underworld. If you’re feeling extra giving, volume two was released earlier this year.

Fantastic Four: Full Circle. Image: Harry N. Abrams/Marvel.
    (Harry N. Abrams / Marvel)

I could just tell you to look at the cover, and there’s all the reasoning you need because it’s mesmerizing. This is an all-in-one Fantastic Four story in which parasites invade the Baxter building. With traces of Negative Energy, the group decides to travel to the Negative Zone, putting their lives and the universe at risk to find who—or what—sent these creatures. Although the story is a licensed sequel (produced outside of Marvel), it feels like it’s totally part of the 616 Fantastic Four. While the story is not too intimidating to newcomers, the psychedelic art and paneling are a little experimental.

Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser & illustrated by Robyn Smith (Image: Chronicle Books)
    (Chronicle Books)

Speaking of this year’s faves and books where the creators were interviewed at TMS, Wash Day Diaries is a must-consider book. The story follows four best friends during a wash day as each one is dealing with issues of family, love, and mental health. I don’t think it’s for everyone, but certainly perfect for those that like slice of life narratives, stories about friends, and self-love. This book will make you smile and might make you cry.

    Smut Peddler Presents: Sordid Past
    (Iron Circus Comics)

This entry into the Smut Peddler catalog features 13 stories of erotic historical fiction spanning thousands of years. Many at TMS have been fans of different Smut Peddler novels and anthologies (like this book) for years. After reading Patience and Ester, I joined the chorus, too! While you can get this on Bookshop, it’s also available on the publisher’s website as a DRM-free PDF (meaning you actually own it) for a discrete and eco-friendly reading experience.

Simon Says: Nazi Hunter Volume 1. Image: Image Comics.
    (Image Comics)

This is a very violent story, so it’s going below the fun erotica. While Simon Says is making the list because it’s a genuinely thrilling story of a Nazi Hunter right after the end of WW2, I’m also adding it because I’m selfish (I know, the opposite of the holidays). This graphic novel was released in 2019, and there’s been no part two—even though it had a wild cliffhanger! If more people read it, they will also want to ask the publisher to invite the artist back to continue the series. Or, at the very least, bring us some closure and tie up loose ends. This is a great gift for those into detective stories and history, especially entering the Cold War era.

  • Disney pushes back ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, ‘Blade’, other Marvel movie release dates

Disney pushes back ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, ‘Blade’, other Marvel movie release dates

    [ad_1]

Walt Disney Co announced on Tuesday it will be pushing back the release dates for numerous upcoming Marvel films including, “Blade,” “Fantastic Four” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

Following “Blade” director Bassam Tariq’s departure from the project in September due to scheduling conflicts, Marvel has decided to temporarily shut down production of the film to search for a new director. “Blade” is now slated to premiere on Sept. 6, 2024 instead of Nov. 3, 2023, which has impacted the rest of the studios’ production scheduling.

“Deadpool 3” has moved from Sept. 6, 2024 to Nov. 8, 2024; “Fantastic Four” has been shifted from Nov. 8, 2024 to Feb. 14, 2025; an untitled Marvel project was moved from Feb. 14, 2025 to Nov. 7, 2025; “Avengers: Secret Wars” has been pushed from Nov. 7, 2025 to May 1, 2026; and an untitled Marvel movie went from May 1, 2026 to no longer being on Disney’s release schedule.

A source familiar with the studio’s plans told Reuters that Marvel is using the “Blade” production break to find a replacement for Tariq to work with “Moon Knight” writer Beau DeMayo, who’s the main screenwriter for “Blade.”

An unnamed source with authority on the film starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali told The Hollywood Reporter that “They want to get it right,” which subsequently means delays.

The Marvel Blade character who first appeared in comic book “The Tomb of Dracula,” written by Marv Wolfman in 1973 eventually had his own storyline that was later adapted into the Wesley Snipes film trilogy which includes, “Blade,” “Blade II” and “Blade Trinity.”

Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, stories have been intertwined and a significant delay from one film often impacts the slate for others. A similar postponement was made for the film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” due to the pandemic and led to “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” being pushed back as well.
